About this property

Rustic Retreat on Seneca Lake Wine Trail - Romantic, Family and Pet Friendly

Rustic log cottage located on a private road right off the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. The secluded nature of the property offers the safe exploration of woods, streams, and the lakeshore for kids, dogs and adults alike. Almost a mile from the nearest public road, you can walk up the hill for the free Friday bands on the brewery deck at our neighbor Wagner Vineyards.

You will find this hidden gem tucked into the edge of a 15-acre grove of trees, streams, and waterfalls, set back just far enough from Seneca Lake. You might wish to walk up to one of the neighboring wineries to bring back a bottle (or two!) for the evening. You can even enjoy a drink on the dock while watching the setting sun or take a walk on the beach and collect some lake glass. For those looking to indulge in the Wine and Beer trails, we are not only fully stocked with glassware and bar tools, but also with plenty of information on Finger Lakes wine, beer and spirits, personal touring options and local restaurant recommendations. The kid's room has a stocked toy box and includes books, games, puzzles, musical instruments and some old-school video game consoles for the whole family to enjoy!

After a long day enjoying the area, retreat to the lofted, high-beamed and hand-cut log main bedroom with moon windows and private bath. Right down the hallway, you will find the kid's room, with two single beds and lots of play space. A separate downstairs bedroom includes a double bed, dresser, and ample closet space.
In the living room you will find a brand new, large sectional couch with a double pull-out bed for guest to enjoy. There are two bathrooms, with the full bath upstairs and half shower downstairs.

For entertainment, you will find countless shelves of books, with a selection of the best books (in our opinion) about the local area. We have also installed a Roku that has basic Netflix and Hulu capabilities and there are a few DVDs and even VHS tapes. If you are traveling here for work, or just have the need for high-speed internet, we now have 100mbps+ Fiber Optic connection available.

Linens and most other details required to move in are supplied. The kitchen is fully stocked down to the olive oil, but we do not provide any food or drinks. Several grocery/retail stores can be found within a 30 minute drive in any direction (Ovid being the closest at around 15 minutes!) Stop at a road-side stand for a taste of the local bounty or even pick your own Seneca Lake fruit and make a pie! And if baking isn't your thing, you can have Laurel make you a custom order for your stay. Special occasion cakes, cupcakes, breakfast pastries and more are available upon request and with advanced notice and approval.

A walk across the road, down a marked path and through the forest, then down a hand-cut stairway takes you to the lake, our dock and the shared beach, set among other lake cottages. Here you will find a few chairs and a fire pit which you are welcome to enjoy as you wish. We have 50 feet of waterfront that makes up our own beach, and you are welcome to walk to the beach in any direction. At times, you may find one of us or a family member using the dock to launch a kayak or enjoying our 100+ year old boathouse that is an occasional summer retreat for Nate's dad. You may tie a kayak to our dock, or moor it on our shorefront during the day (larger boat launching and overnight mooring is available at Lodi Point - three miles by water.). There is a safe place for children to swim as well as a creek you can walk up at your own risk. We ask that you please do not litter and that you leave any places you've enjoyed better than when you arrived. Seneca Lake is notable for fishing: the world’s largest lake trout are routinely taken here. You can find boat and kayak rentals, as well as tours and fantastic restaurants at both ends of the lake in either Geneva or Watkins Glen. We do not supply fishing gear.

This is a rustic home, built of all local materials and it was made to be lived in. Kids can leave their wet swimming suits on the floor, the dog could track in some mud, even a spill or two can happen and it’s not going be an issue. We are in the woods after all! With this being said, we ask that you remain respectful and keep our house as you would like your house kept! There also should be an understanding that you may find some critters occasionally. Spiders like the safety of the house and sometimes a mouse or two will find its way in. In the event that you do come across an overly friendly extra guest, we will come over and take care of it for you.

Our cat, Kitty, is our number one pest control and can usually be found wandering the property doing what cats do best. She is fairly timid around both dogs and people, so you will most likely not see her. But in the event that you do, she is a little black and white tuxedo cat with white paws and there is no need to worry, as she is happily outside enjoying the safety of our land.

We ask that you keep your pets leashed and under supervision at all times. Not only for the safety of them, but for Kitty and our neighbors animals as well. During summertime many neighbors bring their pets and they can be found running around and swimming in the lake, and we wish everyone to feel as safe as possible.

Great for family reunions, BBQ's, NASCAR Events, Wine Trail Tours, fishing trips and more! The cottage is also a fantastic destination for romantic retreats, as we have hosted more than a few couples getting married at the nearby Wagner Vineyards.

A few families even lovingly refer to the cottage as their own summer home and return each year.

We look forward to your stay!
-Nate & Laurel

Peaceful getaway on Seneca lake
"A ~3/4 mile drive from Wagner’s vineyards on a dirt road to the house just above Seneca lake. Nice and quiet but still accessible to the wineries, Finger Lakes national forest. Perfect for dogs to run around on the beach. Arrived to a nice bottle of wine. Thanks!"

"Secluded and peaceful, 2000 foot walk to lake, 25 min drive to Watkins Glen State Park. Ever wanted to be on a lake with peace and quiet? If so, this is the place you have been looking for. You are literally about 1+ mile in from the road with almost no one else around. The lake is within eyesight and just about 2000 feet away. If very much was a "house in the woods." Mind you, this was not super fancy, but it was peaceful and had everything we needed. Watkins Glen State Park is about a 25 min drive and we felt close enough to be able to access, without being too near any crowds. The owner's were incredibly responsive and friendly and not at all intrusive."

Peaceful cabin in the woods
"The property is exactly as pictured—a rustic but comfortable cabin by the lake, just far enough off the main road to be totally quiet, but close to Finger Lakes attractions—Watkins Glen State Park, multiple hiking trails and waterfalls, Ithaca, and several wineries (we also really enjoyed the Lucky Hare Brewing Company and Stone Cat Cafe, both a 10-minute drive away). Nate and Laurel are great hosts and take care to make the cabin comfortable for guests. The kitchen was well kitted out and the chilled wine waiting in the fridge was a lovely touch!"

Perfect cabin

We had a lovely father's day family weekend (2 adults in 2 young kids, 1 dog) playing in the lake/creek, fishing, and taking in the ambiance of the surroundings. The cabin was clean and well-kept. The kitchen is stocked with excellent cooking utensils. The beds were very comfortable. Met or exceeded all expectations!

Ideal house

Great house and location. The house has everything you need . Very short walk to lake and it is a lovely setting in woods. House is located right in the heart of numerous winerys and close to many hiking spots. We would recommend hiking in the Finger Lakes National Forest if you are looking for solitude. If you are looking for something challenging take a hike up the creek just down from the house (only if water is low)

Real Log Cabin in the Woods

Our family had a great time on this vacation! The cabin has tons of personality and plenty to do inside for kids of all ages. We enjoyed the books, games, toys, music, map gazing, cooking, and enjoying the beautiful views from all of the rooms. But outside is where the real treasures lie. We fired up the grill, relaxed in the hammock, swam every day, walked around the vineyard, and hiked up the stream through the amazing gorge. The owners couldn't have been more hospitable, and were great to work with online. We plan to return in the next year or two!

Family Cabin Off the Beaten Path

The cabin had a rustic and lived-in feeling. The driveway off the main road to the cabin was stone and a little steep at parts, we were very grateful for our four wheel drive. Very close to wineries/breweries and short walk down to the water and dock.

Comfortable Cabin

Our group of four adults and one large dog really enjoyed our stay. The cabin definitely has a “lived-in” quality to it, and we really appreciated that. It’s quirky and comfortable, and furnished with all necessary amenities. Both bathrooms were clean and spacious and nicely appointed, and the beds and lines were quite comfortable. The kitchen area is tiny, but entirely serviceable. Access to the laundry machines and the basement (for bike storage) was a welcome perk. We spent an afternoon biking on the Catherine Valley rail trail out of Watkins Glen. A neighbor offered the use of his driveway to put my kayak in the water, which I really appreciated. The shoreline is at the base of a steep hill/cliff on this part of Seneca. The steps to the lake were sturdy and wide, but I am clumsy. We loved this location on the east side of the lake. We enjoyed visiting Atwater winery and Scale House and Grist Iron breweries, all very nearby. Nate and Laurel could not have been more accommodating or hospitable. They clearly love this property, and we’re grateful we got to experience its charm.

Pictures are very inaccurate of what rental property really is. Very disappointed!

House had a very musty smell and so did all the linen available. Needs new screen door, does not latch or close. Area around house needs some work. Exp. the old out house and dog house that need to be knocked down. You can not really see the lake from the house due to all the trees. Stairs going down the stairs are not very safe. Need to be replaced and a real railing. Beach front was not at all what we expected. Old storage shed that needs to be knocked down, landscaping is awful. And old store bought fire pit thrown there. Also needs a lot of TLC. Dock is unsafe as the wood is rotten. The owners should be very embarrassed in how there beach front looks. Also the owner came to the property and took the outside light for her time away. Only lights we had. The owners were staying in some kind of thing above us in the woods and you felt like they were watching you. We dealt with the issues because we could not get a refund. I would highly not recommend this property or ever rent it again. So very disappointed. And the amount of money we paid was a shame.

It's like two experiences in one :)

The home is under a heavily wooded canopy of trees and feels very much like camping in a forrest. Heading through the trees and down the steps places you on the beach with a long dock and plenty of sunshine during the day and access to the starry sky at night. The property is well equipped and the hosts are responsive--super helpful when I accidentally locked myself out ;) This is not a fancy rental, but it is comfortable and spacious. My kids enjoyed the game shelf in the living room and loved how perfect the rocky beach is for skipping stones. We also enjoyed walking up the creek and exploring the little waterfalls and foliage along the way.

Relaxing Vacation for our anniversary!

My husband, myself and two dogs rented this cabin for a long weekend to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. We arrived a bit early and were welcomed into a nice cold bottle of wine. The cabin is very cozy and felt like home. We enjoyed touring local wineries and breweries, but really loved our time at the cabin too. Plenty of room for the dogs to run outside without worry and an great view of the lake. Absolutely loved this trip- no complaints! Thank you so much for the hospitality-We would highly recommend! Relaxing week by Seneca Lake

We stayed here with children for a relaxing week in August. My kids loved the beach access and spent hours playing in the shallow water by the dock. The cabin is comfortable and included a well-stocked kitchen that made it easy to cook meals. The location was terrific, near lots of wineries and driving distance to waterfalls and parks.

Peaceful cabin in the woods

My husband and I stayed at Nate and Laurel’s place for 4 nights and 2 friends joined us for 2 nights. We all had our dogs with us. The cabin is rustic as described but clean, comfortable, and very well stocked. The workmanship of this cabin, especially the master bedroom, is fantastic! The cabin is conveniently located to to the lake (short walk and some stairs), wineries, breweries, and parks. Many great places to hike nearby. Highly recommended!

Interesting

This is only half my review since VRBO limits characters. The owners/managers were super nice! But that alone doesn't make a great cabin rental Super old broken mattresses and couches. I'm guessing mattresses haven't been replaced in 30+ years. Upstairs had a double shower head, it trickled out. Either need an industrial booster pump, or a shower head that better fits with the water flow. Dangerous slippery stairs without a second railing. Screen door was for show only. It wouldn't latch closed or stay open. Plan on bringing jugs of water for dog bowls. Water is typical cabin well water with tons of sediment. When the owners have a renter, they live in a tent up the hill from the cabin. So you feel like you're being watched and can't relax. It looks like they are building a compound up there. Surround by giant tarps as privacy fencing. This greatly bothered the men in each couple that stayed there. Apparently it set off alarm bells in their heads. This was perhaps the biggest issue after the mattresses. The father of the couple who are renting the cabin out, came and stayed in the shed on the water for 24+ hours. Like 4 ft from where we sit and chat while watching the sunset. We were definitely "watched." There is no easy way to get down to the lake. Either a steep hill. Or dangerous 32 rickety stairs. The dock was off limits since it's rotted in places. The "lake front space" is greatly exaggerated in the cabin listing. The cabin owners are feuding with the neighbors on one side. Let's just say that was a little awkward and led to there being no easy way to get down to the lake. We ended up carrying the kayaks up and down the rickety stairs. 3 campfire places and my guess is none have been cleaned out in a very long time. Lots of broken glass in the one down by the lake. There were debris, trash, and broken glass next to where the vehicles were parked. We were unable to locate a rake to clean it up and make it puppy paw safe. Trash cans were mostly full when we got there. The VRBO listing said it was private and peaceful. Nope! Farthest thing from private. The gf of the guy who rented us the cabin, does bake some kick ass cookies! We bought a stupid amount of those 😍 The cabin was super pet friendly, but the bad stuff def outweighed the good. We had a good time and rolled with the awkwardness, but wouldn't choose to put ourselves in that position.

A Great Getaway

A cozy and welcoming lake house that really felt like home-- extremely comfortable. with a great "lived-in" feel that made it easy to relax. It is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape and is only a short distance to wineries, orchards, and state parks. The owners are communicative and responsive. We look forward to visiting here again!

About the host

Hosted by Nate Schwartz & Laurel O'Donnell

Host profile image
Nate Schwartz and Laurel O'Donnell decided it was time to move out to the lake house from Ithaca back in late 2016. It was the dead of winter, late December, and we looked at each other one day and said: "We should get outta town, go live where it's quieter." So we left the apartments that we were still paying for, and on a mission to save both dollars and sanity, we both decided to move in together; out into "the sticks" and breathe life back into this beautiful house.

Built in the late-1970's by David Schwartz, Nate's father, after he too had escaped the city life; it was the family home for a number of years. The last full-time residents lived here in 1985, and it has been rented out as a summer home for the last decade. David kept a tight hold on the property through the years hoping that one day, Nate would find its beauty and move onto the land. Luckily for him, that day happened and here we are! Now we are running the rental business, keeping up the property and making big plans for future expansions and additions. We hope you enjoy the changes we have made if you are a returning guest and if not, we look forward to turning you into one!

Why they chose this property

This home is almost entirely built from local trees and natural materials: red pine, hemlock, fir, and oak cut and milled just a few miles away. Its rustic feel and quaint woodsy charm has captivated guests for years and just calls to mind simpler times. 15 acres are yours to explore and you will never see it all! It's secluded location right off of the beautiful Wine Trail has you just miles away from the best food, wine and sights the state of New York has to offer.

What makes this property unique

We like to call this place sanctuary. It is a place to visit when you want to leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Time moves slower here, and even the trees feel different when they dance in the wind that comes off the lake. This is a place to find peace, to feel safe and to nurture love, and we welcome you to share it with us.
