Please check calendar for availability. Reserve now for a fabulous price so close to beach. Authentic Outer Banks Cottage with new wood flooring on the entire main floor, new carpet on the upper floor, new refrigerator, and new couch to help make a great get away. Swim or sun at your private pool, or walk to the beach (100 ft.) in 2 minutes. There is a beach lifeguard on duty during summer season. The area to the North of the cottage is greenspace.
This means you have private, unoccupied beach to the North and not built up with any real estate.
We have beach chairs, umbrella, and rolling cooler. An outdoor shower provides an area to rinse off after a day at the beach. Have a meal or just relax & read on the screen porch. Ample back deck for sunning or a relaxing cup of coffee. Upper deck off master bedroom has an ocean view or a quiet area to get away. 3 TV's with Apple boxes, lots of board games/puzzles, and videos for evening relaxing. Two tennis courts located 2 blocks away.

Mermaid Cottage is in the center of Corolla, close to everything. Located across from the Currituck Club and Harris Teeter. Timbuck II Shopping area (65 shops) is located 10 min. to the North, across from Food Lion Center with more shops. Historic Currituck Lighthouse & Whalehead Club are a short drive further North. That is also the location of the 4 wheel drive area where the Wild Mustangs of NC are located. A beautiful memory to experience on your beach vacation! You can book a tour to visit them.

Good place

If you don’t need new and fancy this is your place! It has all the amenities you need for a great week at the beach. Lots of kitchen stuff and tons of beach stuff and pool stuff. Very comfortable and so close to the beach. We will definitely stay here again

Amazing

We all loved this property and were so sad to leave. Perfect location with the porch looking over the nature preserve, quick walk to ice cream and Harris Teeter, 2 min walk to the beach and an amazing pool to cool down in.

Great location

Owner was great. She went out of her way to accommodate our last minute booking. Everything as advertised.Location was great. Short 2 minute walk to beach. 8 minute walk to grocery. Perfect for our family of 6.

Great location, could be a bit cleaner

This was our second stay, we came back for the proximity to the beach, neighborhood and pool, all of which are excellent for the price. We were disappointed this year with the cleanliness. When we arrived, the floor was sandy, the dishwasher wasn’t emptied, one of the beds had sand in it, and one of the trash bins wasn’t emptied.

Peaceful vacation

Property is located few steps from private beach for the community. They have updated a lot of things like fridge, coffee maker, blender, washer/dryer, carpets, flooring, new mattresses, new towels, outdoor patio table, ac, pool seat covers, pool toys, etc. Grocery store was a two minute drive. Evening was very close by like the lighthouse 10 minutes drive. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you!

So Close to Beach & Ocean View from Top Balcony

We enjoyed the very close proximity to the beach, the pool, 3 tv’s each with Apple TV devices, outside shower, grill area, like-new washer and dryer, and availability of high-quality beach chairs and 3 coolers. Some things that disappointed us: there was a strong urine odor in the first floor master closet and a similar but lesser smell in the bunk bedroom next to that closet; perhaps from the pack-and-play or bedding that was in that closet? It seemed that some areas in the house could use a deep cleaning, but overall, we enjoyed our stay. We appreciated the phone calls from the owners whenever we texted with questions.

Excellent beach location!

We spent a week here with my family and parents and we had an amazing week. This house is super close to the beach (even close enough for my 3 year old to walk the whole way), the kitchen is well equipped, and the numerous decks were wonderful. It's right next to open space, so the beach was never crowded. We used the pool a lot as well, and the outside shower was really convenient. This house is close to everything, and we drove up to Corolla to see the wild horses on the beach....which I highly recommend people do. We also got this house for a great price, and the owner was very helpful in our communications. The only thing that bothered me was that it got very hot in the upstairs master bedroom, so if you go, have someone stay in there that gets cold easily. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and if we weren't adding to the people staying with us next year, we would definitely go back.

Quaint cottage by the sea

Cottage was perfect for a family getaway. It isn't anything fancy but certainly just right for family with kids. Owner was quick to respond to all correspondences and also worked with me as I booked unusual days. The VRBO app didn't correct me to do a Saturday to Saturday rental and she worked with what I booked even though it threw off the cleaners and the rental schedule. The cleaners however I would say are subpar. I did find their info on a paper under a side table on the third day. Had I seen it the first day I'd have contacted them. I do know the owner would have made arrangements if Id have complained to her but after a 12 hour drive I didn't want to pack back up and sleep somewhere else because the cleaners did a garbage job. Besides the cleaners sucking it was a really nice time. Kids lived in the pool and the beach was a hop, skip and a jump away. The neighborhood was also mostly quiet and we appreciated that as well.

Amazing cottage!

The Mermaid Cottage was so much better than we had anticipated re: the poor reviews. The house was perfect for our group of 2 families with 4 under 8yo between us, and it was as clean as any of our other beach stays other than some sunscreen on a patio table. The layout was 2 bdrms & bath in one section of the first floor (along with kitchen, dining area, and sitting area in the other section) and then 2 bedrooms and a bath upstairs. There's also the typical outdoor shower. The decks were in great shape with plenty of chairs and great views including an ocean view from the top floor balcony (though it is off of a bedroom). We don't go to OBX to sit inside, so the small size and well loved decor were welcome touches. When were weren't at the beach, we were in the smallish but clean pool. There were a ton of games, books, and even colored pencils and a coloring book. The location can't be beat for the price. It didn't feel like an effort at all to walk to the beach a few times a day. The beach itself was never crowded and since it's private, we saw many of the same folks all week. Overall one of my best beach stays and will try to book again next time we're in OBX.

Our family has stayed at Mermaid Cottage many years. Two years ago, it was not available, so our family stayed at a very modern, really big house in a similar location. Funny, though, everyone (4 adults) preferred Mermaid Cottage. It was perfect for what we needed. It was, and should be, a Beach House!!! Exactly what we loved!

The house is a bit outdated but it was nicely located on a quiet street. It was close to shopping and dining, which was a big plus for us. The pool was nice to have and the water was clean.

Very enjoyable stay

The house was as described, nice ocean breezes and views from all decks, including ocean view from second floor. The house was ideal for our small family, extremely convenient to the beach, supermarkets and restaurants, and the private pool was a great option. We did not have any issues with the cleanliness as described in other reviews. Check in and check out was very easy. Overall, it was a great vacation and we would stay here again.

Great location!

The property is definitely in a great location and it was well stocked with kitchen items and beach accessories. That being said, the cottage was a bit tired and run down. It needed a good deep clean and definitely some sprucing up. I assume that the price we paid was due to the proximity to the beach. It wasn't a terrible experience, just a bit disappointing.

Disappointed

This home is located in our preferred neighborhood and was the appropriate size for our small family. The private pool was also a nice feature. Outside of those items, this house was very disappointing. Either it wasn’t professionally cleaned before our stay or they need to reconsider the crew they’re using. There was no communication about check out procedures. We could see that some upgrades have been made, but many more are needed to bring this house up to the standard of the neighborhood. We, unfortunately, will not be returning guests.

Great location, steps from the beach!

The property owner was absolutely lovely and extremely communicative! I found myself texting her throughout the trip just to keep updating her on our fun. The house is small but in no way is it miss advertised. You can tell it’s older but they take pride in it and it shows! The pool was amazing, the outside was great especially on rainy days where the kids could still play underneath the porch. There’s tons of games and art supplies provided! We completely enjoyed our stay!

This property is definitely quaint. It is older and a little tired. Outside needs paint and a little TLC. The owners were very responsive and were quick to answer our questions. If you are looking for modern-this isn't for you.

After reading mixed, we decided to take a chance. Big mistake. We arrived at to a filthy house (slept in beds, dirty linens & bathrooms, etc). We contacted the daughter of the owner. She couldn’t get in touch with the cleaning company, so she booked us two rooms at a local hotel. We only had a mini refrigerator, so we had to keep our food in our cooler overnight. She contacted me late that night to say the unit was being cleaned, fresh linens would be delivered, and we could move in the next day. We lost an entire day of our vacation (couldn’t shop for groceries or unpack until Sunday) The house had been cleaned, but we did have to purchase cleaning supplies for very dirty sliding doors, counters, tables, etc. The coded entry way has a very rusty doorknob that scratches your skin when opening the door. It opens to the basement area where the washer and dryer are located. This area stayed damp, musty, and moldy the entire week we were there, making it unusable for us. The stairways leading to the first floor of the house and the one leading to the second floor don’t have a handrails for the bottom three stairs. With mobility issues, this may be a problem. 1st floor bathroom tub doesn’t drain well, so we all shared the shower on the second floor. The doorknob sticks and I was stuck in the bathroom several times. We stopped closing the door to prevent this from happening. There was a brush behind the toilet that had been used to unclog the toilet. It was covered in dried feca

House worked for us

House showed its age but worked out well for us. Items for the beach were in very good condition. AC could have been better very warm in the upstairs bedroom. The distance to the beach was very short.

Pictures was deceiving, was not clean, decks was falling apart, ad said it had queen beds but they we’re only full size beds, pool was dirty when we arrived, and also pictures showed wild horses but none at that beach

Beyond Surprised Great Vacation.

Let me begin by saying we were very nervous when we booked this house the reviews were poor but they were from 2018 and the listing said it had been updated. When we decided to book this house the inventory was very low and we took a gamble on this one and IT PAID Off!!! The homeowners have done a lot of renovations and it shows but you still got the feel of the old OBX days and it was perfect!!! This home is in a great location close to beach and has a private pool. We went to the 4-wheel drive beaches and got to see the wild horses on the beach! Grocery store within walking distance was a plus. DO NOT pass this one up like we almost did. Will definitely look for this one in the future. Thank you again.

We are a retired military family and have traveled the world. Now we call the VA Peninsula home which allows to be hands on home owners. We would like to share the Outer Banks with everyone.

Why they chose this property

We love the Outer Banks. The development is limited by size and codes making for a uncrowded and relaxing place with pristine beaches. We loved seeing the wild mustangs. They roamed this area when we first came down. Now for their own safety, they have been moved to the 4 wheel drive area which is North of Corolla. You make take tours to go see them.

What makes this property unique

There is nothing like the beach to relax and the Outer Banks has some of the best beaches on the East Coast.
You will see the brown pelcians flying in a row, going North for fishing (we think). They ride the wind draft coming off the dunes. We have counted a group of 32.
