Beautiful 5,000 square foot Home on quiet lake in Alexandria
Welcome to the McCabe Cabin on Lake Henry. We call it a cabin, but with 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and over 5000 square feet it really is more of a lake home. Whether you are looking for a place large enough to have a family reunion or someplace intimate enough for a small gathering the McCabe Cabin is the perfect choice.
We started renting it out to friends and family in the summer of 2008 and had such a positive response that we decided to expand it to off season and more specialized rentals such as scrap booking. Check out the photos and the description in the following pages and contact us if you have any further questions. Thanks for your interest.

We stayed here for our annual family trip with my parents, my brother’s family and my family (10 people total). It was spacious and quiet. The lake is very peaceful. We loved all the cozy spots to gather both in the house and outside. We really enjoyed the terrace area down by the lake. There were enough chairs in each area to accommodate the whole crew- including the dining table. Had fun taking out the pontoon to swim in the middle of the lake, laying out on the swim raft, paddle boarding around, and going in the sauna. The kitchen was outfitted with anything we needed and having the extra fridge was a definite plus. We absolutely loved our stay!
The house was clean and exactly as described. There was ample room for everyone to have their own space and be together. The pontoon worked great and was comfortable for many of us to be on at the same time. We really enjoyed our stay and have already booked for next summer!
We had a great time. We fished off the dock, biked the nearby trails, golfed, dined and just spent time together. The Sauna was a big hit. Accommodations were great.
We got to meet Mickey, the host. It was a pleasure talking with him.
We hope to make it back!
The property is beautiful. There is plenty of room for a large group. It is well stocked with games, books, kitchen and bath basics. The kayaks, pontoon boat and sauna were great. We enjoyed bonfires under the stars and had a wonderful family vacation. We came to fish and did end up going to a larger lake for better fishing.Overall a great experience and we would come back.
This was a girl's trip to the Alexandria, MN area. The house and grounds were great. Plenty of room for everyone. The house was very well furnished and had a well stocked kitchen. Would definitely recommend.
Each fall, our family gets together. The house was perfect for the 8 of us. We enjoyed the huge yard (soccer, cornhole, frisbee. etc.). The house had plenty of room for our whole group to play board games and it still has room for everyone to find their quiet corner. The kitchen was well stocked and had every pan, utensil, and appliance (even an air-fryer) needed to make a number of big dinners. Thanks - great property.
Access to the pontoon was a nice component for extended family. Home is within walking distance of downtown. Private bedrooms and spaces for togetherness or alone time as we wished. Quiet neighborhood. Well stocked kitchen and games closet.
Beautiful cabin inside and out. Also Micky is very easy to get ahold of with any questions. The place is well stocked with all kitchen/grilling/bath/swimming/extracurricular supplies. The pontoon is huge and having it included is a huge bonus. Also the sauna in the boat house is amazing. Plus there’s a huge yard for lawn games, and two very nice fire pits. Would most definitely stay here again! 10/10 recommended for any groups 12-14 people
Beautiful home & grounds. Our family enjoyed playing tons of corn hole, fire pits, bird watching, watching sunrises over the lake, playing cards & games, and kayaking.
Dining room light fixture does not give adequate light - especially for games.
Pontoon was usable but not quite reliable. We enjoyed tootling about the lake and did make it safely back to the dock each time but motor appeared to need attention or replacement.
Host Mickey, accommodated quickly in addressing our requests.
My family tries to get together for a week-long vacation once a year. We’ve mostly stayed in the same area but decided to branch out to Alexandria this year. We were so glad to find a property that would fit us all and it did not disappoint! There were plenty of bedrooms to afford everyone a place to sleep with some privacy. It was clean and offered so many amenities we really didn't need to bring much at all! The kitchen had all the necessary tools to cook and eat, and the bathrooms were well stocked with towels and hygiene products. It was a bit chilly, so there were only a couple warm swim days, but the patios both down by the lake and up at the house had seating and fire pits and were great for hanging out and having campfires.
Plenty of room for yard games, in a nice quiet neighborhood and within walking distance of downtown. We all knew we wanted to come back again next year so we've already booked our stay!
Everything went smoothly. The home was ready for us and was well supplied with paper products, spices, and condiments and was very clean. I'm sure people have been leaving their condiments behind when they leave as there was a plethora of mustards and ketchups in the refrigerator.
We enjoyed the patios as we could watch the kids swimming and paddle boarding and even sit out in the rain and stay dry on one of them. The sauna was a pleasant surprise and enjoyed by many. We played many yard games as there was plenty of room for that as well. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us for the week.
This was our second stay at the property and we were excited to come back. We enjoy the area, the scenery and the amenities at the house. We came with more family members this time as we were staying at the property after our son's college graduation. The family members who weren't here the last time were impressed with the lodging and the natural beauty of the area. We enjoyed the fire pit every day - both for warmth and to cook many of our meals. We spent some time on the lake using the boat and our son really enjoyed his time kayaking on the lake. The short walk to the historic downtown Alexandria area was really fun and we shopped at several of the quaint stores.
We were a little disappointed at the the cleanliness of the refrigerator/freezer (it had a smell) and we used some bicarb to deal with the issue. There were also some trash items in both fire pits and the grills needed some cleaning. When I took the bedding off the beds as we were leaving, I noticed that all the mattress covers were dirty. ?Maybe they should be cleaned after each guest. The showers in the basement and off the back porch has some black fungus visible that we cleaned with Clorox spray.
Other than those few things, we were super happy with the property and will certainly come back if it's in our future plans. We highly recommend enjoying both the sunrise and sunset with your favorite beverage.
Perfect setting with beautiful views of the lake. Plenty of places to sit and visit outside. The free pontoon was a big plus. Great fishing, nice swimming, fantastically relaxing sauna, well appointed kitchen, comfortable beds, and plenty of space for everyone.
If you're looking for a beautiful place to stay that can accommodate a large group, this is it! We stayed here last August and elected to stay here again this year since it checked all the boxes for our family gathering. The kitchen's fully stocked with anything you could need for dining and cooking. There are plenty of different areas inside and out for everyone to gather or to just be on their own. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable and the bathrooms are spacious and well stocked with towels, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, etc. We brought very little other than clothing! Outside are two great patios with fire pits so you have the option to hang out up by the house or down near the lake which also has a nice little beach area. It was great to have the lake easily accessible for older family members rather than dealing with a lot of stairs to climb. The pontoon worked just fine and there were plenty of lifejackets available for anyone that needed one. Mickey is friendly and quick to respond on any issues. The location is within walking distance to downtown and there's also some nice paths to walk around the lake. Overall, the perfect place for some family fun and relaxation!
Great place lots of room pontoon was excellent for fishing caught walleye and bass. Kids loved the paddle boards and swim platform. Great kitchen and grilling. Great outdoor space bikes and ping pong table had a great tourney. Thanks for all. Would suggest at least a double bed in the main floor bedroom.
Excellent property and owner/manager. Mickey was always available to answer questions and address concerns. This was our second year to stay at Mickey's property and have already scheduled next year.
House was great for a big group of all ages. They had a lot to offer, games, toys, large lawn, great patio for fires or sitting outside, and the pontoon was great! The lake was also great for bass fishing or just trolling around! We will for sure stay again!
This is the third time we stayed here over Christmas break. We love it. Lots of room for everyone. Nice and clean. Lots of comfortable seating in the livingroom. Second living room downstairs. Great location. Extra refrigerator. I can't say enough good about it, and i highly recommend it. The boys love the sauna.
We had a great time. This was our 2nd trip to this venue. We are thinking about it again. Would recommend as it is so easy to get around. Walking distance to many things. Great lake front and yard for swimming, firepits, lounging, and eating outside. You will not be disappointed.
We stayed at this VRBO last year about the same time which is proof that we enjoyed our stay here. The weather was perfect! Fishing was good enough for a good meal. Location is perfect. Absolutely no complaints. Planning for next year!
next year already!
We'll definitely be back!!! Our Family Gathered from Colorado, North Dakota & Minnesota at this lovely Home for a weeklong Retreat&Respite&Reunion on a Peaceful Lake.....it was simply Spectacular!
Annual family getaway - a return location for sure
Stay here. Don't hesitate booking this incredible home. We make a point to choose different homes and different lakes every year. This one checked all of the boxes and was recommended by the group as a rebook for a following year!
Plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms are on every level. Laundry is quiet and on the lower level. Many sitting groups and areas both inside, outside, and lakeside.
FYI: Icemaker is just a regular fridge icemaker. (When you have 12 people, it matters!)
There are currently only two fridges - the drink/bait fridge is out of commission.
Lots of seating in the living room and HDMI hookup on the TV. We were able to play games, use the TV to project Scattagories lists, and do our nightly round of "Helper of the Day".
The area is perfect for that morning walk (there's a trail nearby). NIce turn around point for 2 miles daily. Ample garbage and recycling bin storage. Huge pantry storage for your groceries. Plenty of cookware, fridge storage containers, etc. We weren't at a loss for anything.
Fishing was good. Lots of little fish by the dock, but the Baitcaster a little further yielded bass. Lake health is good, noticed by the presence of turtles. Kayaks, paddleboard, and jumping dock were a daily use item. Plenty of seating dockside and lakeside for family viewing and photos. Lake isn't busy, which makes it nice for fishing, swimming, and lounging.
Owner is easy to reach and responsive. Quick to navigate any troubleshooting we had. Very good space!

Why they chose this property
We purchased this home in 2005 and have not been able to use it as much as we had hoped so we decided to rent it out during the weeks that we are not there. It's located on a quiet lake within walking distance of downtown Alexandria MN.
