Quiet, Picturesque, Comfortable Cabin
Quiet, picturesque, comfortable but fitting into the feel of Custer SD so wonderfully. This was the perfect place to start our days, out on the porch watching the horses in the pasture, and finish the day relaxing with friends and family. The cabin is stocked with everything we needed. All we needed to bring is food and drink. We highly recommend this as your next getaway location. Close to so many of the sought after places in the Black Hills. So very happy to have found this cabin. If we have a chance visit the area again we will definitely check the cabin’s availability before any other option.

Fantastic getaway!
Where to start?! We had the best stay in the Black Hills at this property. If you are looking to spend time with family away from the hustle and bustle of life while still having conveniences of home, look no further! It was brand new & clean with a fully stocked kitchen, laundry, plenty of towels, and best of all— 5 beautiful horses roaming the pasture in the backyard for a large part of the day. We stayed with our 4 kids ages 3-8, and we spent hours watching the horses and petting them when they came to see us at the fence. The property owner was immediately responsive to any questions we had! Location was secluded and SO QUIET (besides the sounds of elk bugling in the night and early morning!), yet still convenient to get to Custer, Custer state park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave, etc. If we find ourselves back in the Black Hills, we will definitely be back!

So glad we found this cabin!
Our family couldn’t have asked or wanted for anything more. We loved the privacy, the beautiful property and cabin, and all the amenities. We explored the nearby mine, enjoyed the wildlife - being able to do a couple loads of laundry was the added bonus! This cabin was the perfect home base for our adventures in the Black Hills. Thank you!

About the host

We fell in love and bought this property in 2008 while living in Minnesota and made it our goal to relocate here after our son graduated from high school. We made the dream come true in 2020 and are now permanent residents of South Dakota. Building a guest cabin was part of the plan and with some patience we were able to complete the project in 2022. We live not far away - further down the road in the "old place" - and spend our non-working lives horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and tending to our four horses, one mule, two dogs and two cats.

You may chance to meet our horses should they be spending time in the lower pasture near the cabin. We invite you to enjoy their company from a respectful distance and ask that you not feed them - they eat plenty as it is.

Why they chose this property

The cabin offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy time in a secluded environment on the edge of US Forest Service property all while enjoying modern conveniences. Hiking and exploring begin right outside the door, and wildlife viewing is possible from the comfort of the living room or front porch. Deer are plentiful, coyotes common, every now and then an elk will wander by. Much, much rarer but living in the area are mountain lion - please watch small children, pets and yourselves when hiking here or anywhere throughout the Black Hills.

Across the pasture you will see through the trees the remnants of an old mine. Mines in this area were active in the 1940's and materials such as mica, feldspar, beryl and quartz were extracted. There is a trail that follows between the two fences to the west or left of the cabin that goes to the mine and beyond. Feel free to explore - quartz and other materials are free for the taking if you have the desire or means to carry.

Hot Shot Hideaway is located minutes from Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. Both parks can be accessed via Lower French Creek Drive.

What makes this property unique

We live just minutes down the road and are typically around to assist guests if a need arises with their stay or other. We have also spent countless hours exploring the immediate and surrounding areas. If you have questions about local venues or activities feel free to ask. We'll probably have an answer and / or an opinion.

Kayaks and transport to and from Stockade Lake available by prior special arrangement. Contact hosts for details and availability.
