About this property

Charming unique private house overlooking pastures near Amsterdam

Our holiday home is situated in the countryside on a dike next to the picturesque river “Het Gein”. A typical Dutch surrounding with windmills and cos, where you can bike and walk. In the summertime you can swim in the river Het Gein.
Amsterdam is very nearby: with a bike it takes you 5 minutes to subway station Gein, which takes you in 20 minutes to the center of Amsterdam. With a car you can drive in 5 minutes to the P+R subway station of Gaasperplas or to the train station Abcoude or Weesp.
Because our house is so centrally located, all big tourist attractions are within an hour drive, such as Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Volendam, Marken, The Hague, Hoge Veluwe, Utrecht and the 'Venice of the North' : Giethoorn etc etc.

The summerhouse (now holiday home) of our farm, which was built in 1865, is situated just 200m from the city border of Amsterdam. On the first (ground)floor there are 2 bedrooms each with an individual bath room, there is a living and a large kitchen with dining table. The folding doors brings you to the big private garden which gives you a panoramic view to the surrounding pastures with grazing sheep and cows.
On the second floor you will find a very spacious loft-like lounge area and large dining table with fire place. There is also a tv with dvd player on both first and second floor.

The house has a rich history: until the 60’s the summerhouse was a cattle shed with hay-loft and the farm was leased by various farmers families. Later the land was sold by the Amsterdam municipality to the famous Dutch sculptor Nel van Lith. On the old hay-loft she gave sculptor lessons to our former Queen Beatrix. From 1995 a garden architect lived here and she designed the English/French romantic garden that is still intact today.

The place was clean and in a nice area, we had some problems with mosquitoes and flies during our visit and we did not have any windows or doors open. Also it was difficult for us to carry our heavy pieces of luggage to the place, there is no sidewalk to the place just a gravel walkway. Overall it was fine for a few days.

Enjoyed our stay

There is a lovely garden with a deck where we are entertained by the birds, the mallards, the cows and the flowers . Very convenient location, we can always find a great outdoor cafe for lunch. We like the kitchen, which is large and has a gas stove.

Very nice, charming and cozy cottage in a beautiful location. It is the perfect size for two adult couples to share. Each of the two bedrooms have two twin beds that convert to a king-size bed. We loved that each bedroom has a en suite bath. The half bath and washer/dryer in a separate room were also much appreciated. The gardens on the property are lovely. It was great fun seeing the cows on the neighbors farm. There are quite a few herons nearby, too. The river in front of the cottage also made for beautiful scenery and a lovely place for strolls at any time of day. It’s a somewhat rural location, so the WiFi was a bit slow, but we were there to unwind. Mentioned it here in case future guests need to work. There’s a living/family room on the upper level, which makes a great relaxation place. However, there are very steep stairs (think ships ladder) to get up there, which we found a little unnerving. They may be a challenge for people with mobility issues, but people who are younger and more robust than us will probably find the stairs just fine. We did miss having a freezer included in the refrigerator, but the host very graciously held a frozen item for us. We were sad to leave and would absolutely stay again.

Serenity in Abcoude.

I'd stay here again. The temp in the house was a little cold but we adjusted.

This place has it all!

Stephanie has provided a beautiful, spacious place in a bucolic setting. The town of Abcoude has a number of nice restaurants which Stephanie recommends, a gas station and local grocery store. we would definitely stay there again if we are fortunate enough to be able to return.

Quiet stay

This property was beautiful and peaceful. It was a lot of space for our family of 4. Check in and out was easy. A car is recommended if you are visiting other places, but not necessary. We used the train station, which is about a 20 minute walk away.

“GEZELLIG” as the Dutch say. This cottage is situated on the Hein River nestled between two quaint villages, Abcoude and Vesp. Its idyllic. Great for cycling. Two properties down the road, you can buy farm fresh cheese, milk, and yogurt. The scenery is so Dutch! Windmills, sheep, cows, and blooming sunflowers.

A real gem near Amsterdam,

This place was a perfect place of respite after a day of sightseeing around South Holland. The garden and grounds were so beautiful we almost hated to leave the house to travel for the day. Stephanie is an excellent host. She helped us navigate our way into Amsterdam (local train station) and to find local restaurants.

Beauttiful Dutch trip

Stunning countryside setting, with easy access to the local town of Abcoude and its station to then explore Amsterdam. The house its self was beautiful and everything we needed was there. Stephanie was on hand should you need any assistance. All in all a great trip and will hopefully return.

Great stay in nature

Stephanie’s place is an amazing converted barn surrounded by a lovely garden and farmland. The location is convenient to Amsterdam (25 min by train) and a short run or drive to the quaint town of Weesp. She takes pride in her property and is extremely helpful with local tips and ideas of things to do in the area. Be sure to walk to the local dairy farm for some Tasty cheeses, yogurt and milk. Very comfortable for our family of four to stay in for multiple days. We will be back!

Perfect for an extended stay: quiet and beautiful.

We spent three weeks here using this charming home as a base for our travels throughout various parts of the Netherlands. It is easy to reach Amsterdam from here and our host provided us with great details about getting to and from the city. Stephanie was responsive when an issue arose with the hot water and she kept us up-to-date when a local marathon forced a road closure. The home had everything we needed to make our stay pleasant. If you are looking for a quiet country get-away, in a charming setting this is the perfect place for you.

Beyond Beautiful!

This surpassed our wildest dreams. Such a well-equipped “little” cottage. So roomy, beautifully decorated, just the perfect place for a family to stay on holiday. One disclaimer, it’s a bit far from Amsterdam and neither train station is all that close. If you don’t have a car, you’ll pay premium for Ubers back and forth. But I would still stay here again in a heartbeat.

Best of the best.

Anyone wishing to stay at this property will be amazed at how wonderful it is. It's location will give you a true experience of living on the outskirts of a lovely village. It has the best of everything. Easy transport into the city. Plenty of shops and places to explore. The accommodation is very clean and short of nothing. Our host was very helpful and recommended lots of things to do. It was a shame we couldn't stay longer. Do not miss the property, you will be amazed.
