About this property

River's Roost Riverfront Cabin in the Gorge.

A very rare location, on the Red River and inside the Red River Gorge. Close to the best sites & trails. The porch looks into the river 25' below. Outside on the deck is a charcoal grill, fire pit, porch swing, benches and chairs. In the loft are queen & twin size beds. Below, is a full size futon/bed, kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen has a fridge, stove, microwave, coffeemaker, pots/pans, dishes, flatware etc. It has TV, heat, A/C, fans, and high speed internet.

The cabin towers over the river elevated on poles. The covered front porch has a table and chair set, bench and end table. See directly into the river from the porch. Under the cabin is a large charcoal grill (BYO charcoal and lighter) a porch swing, hammock, folding chairs, and a fire pit. The property is gated and has a privacy fence. Guests have exclusive access to the cabin and surrounding grounds. There is parking for two cars below the cabin. A private path leads to the river below the cabin.

Our guests get and a 10% discount on kayak rentals and shuttle services at Mill Creek Lake at Natural Bridge State Park, and at Red River Adventure on the river. Bring your kayaks and swimsuits!

Unlike almost all other advertised cabins in the area, this cabin is actually inside the Gorge, on the river, and surrounded by miles of Forest Service lands. Don't be mislead, check our location on the map. The only other structure in view is our home, which is about 100 yards away and across the road.

Due to it's remote location there is no "city" water. The cabin is on a well water system. It's fine for cooking, showers/washing. But we recommend that you bring bottled water for drinking purposes. We provide some bottled water, which you will find in the fridge. The cabin is close to the locally famous "Nada Spring". In fact you will probably pass by the spring on the way to the cabin. It's where we, and most other locals, get our drinking water. It's free, clean, good tasting, ice cold and an approved/tested water source. Bring some gallon jugs, and get some Nada Spring water.

Firewood may be gathered if it is already on the ground, or you may buy firewood from nearby kayak outfitter, Red River Adventure. Please, no cutting standing trees or gathering large limbs /logs. Make sure your fire is small, and that it is out before you leave the cabin.

As we are surrounded by miles of forest, there is always the possibility of a power outage. Bring a flashlight. There is an emergency light in the cabin. We will contact the electric company about the outage ASAP, it is usually restored within 3-4 hours.
Mobile phone service in the Gorge is spotty depending on your provider.

As this is a rustic cabin in the middle of the woods you may see wasps/insects around the cabin, as they search out structures to make their home. We work on that constantly and make every effort to minimize thier presence. Beaver, otters, geese, deer, turkeys and other wild life are often near the cabin or in the water

Please do not leave your pet unattended on the property. Well behaved, non-aggressive dogs are welcome. By renting the cabin you agree that you are liable for your pet's actions.

Simple and lovely get away
My husband, son and I stayed for two nights and had a lovely stay. While the weather would not cooperate and we did not get to enjoy the porch to the extent we wanted, we had a really relaxing time. We loved the minimalist cabin and the location was perfect. Judy and Ken were wonderful hosts and we would definitely recommend their cabin!

Great location
We wanted a base to do hiking, kayaking, and biking in the Red River Gorge, and this place had by far the best location. It's a bit expensive for what you get--a cabin with no private rooms.

Birthday by the river
The cabin and venue are great. The backyard is right on the water and you may see otters or beavers swimming around in the red river. The cabin is very spacious and offers multiple amenities for cooking and relaxing. We spent most of our time by the fire pit enjoying the beauty of the location. We cooked 2 nights with no issues, pots pans and cooking accessories were provided. I will likely be back with my kayak to enjoy the venue and river access. The hosts are very hospitable, I had tire trouble from a drive in the gorge and they were happy to help when I reached out.

My wife and I are both Army veterans. After I retired, we moved back home because our family has lived here for generations, and many still live here today. We have been here for 20 years now and never want to live anywhere else. It took a year for us to build our home. We used timber from logs we cut, which we then then milled into lumber using our own sawmill. Once the house was built, we hiked and exploring the area for over a year before deciding to build the cabin on the river. Again, we used our sawmill to make the lumber and built the cabin completely by ourselves. Building that high above ground level presented some challenges, but for a couple of amateurs, it turned-out well. Originally the cabin was used as a guesthouse. But visitors to the area often asked to rent it, so we opened it to the public several years ago on another platform. With the cabin completed, we opened our first business: "Red River Adventure" is a kayak rental and campground located about a 1/4 mile downstream from the cabin. Soon after, we opened a 2nd location at nearby Natural Bridge State Park, called "Mill Creek Lake Kayak & SUP" (our cabin guests get discounts at both locations). Recently we opened the "Glamp Camp", featuring three luxury tent cabins on a beautiful nearby property. All of that kept us busier than we really wanted to be. Then, fortunately for us, our son decided to return home after military tours in Iraq, Germany and Texas. He is now running Red River Adventure with the help of his growing family. Life is good in the Gorge.

Why they chose this property

There are many rental properties claiming to be "in the Gorge"......almost all of them are miles away. Don't be misled, check our location on the map. River's Roost Cabin is one of the very few properties actually inside the Gorge, and the only one directly on the river. It's near all the hiking trails and great spots in the Gorge. While the cabin is new to this platform, it has a long history of great reviews and is highly rated on others platforms.

What makes this property unique

Our cabin guests can bring their own kayaks. Be advised that the bank is steep and that any activities, including launching, kayaking/boating, fishing and swimming will be at YOUR OWN RISK, and that there is NO LIFEGUARD. Cabin guests get discounts on our kayak services at Mill Creek Lake and at Red River Adventure. Our guests may fish from the cabin. Tip: Night fishing with worms or live bait catches some nice catfish.
