First time visiting the Outer Banks and what a great experience. This house had everything you need to enjoy a family vacation without having to leave to find stuff to do for the kids. The property is exactly as the pictures show, very clean, well equipped, and well kept. The Pool Deck was absolutely amazing with something for everyone. The beach access is directly across the driveway which makes trips to and from the beach painless. The property owner/host was extremely helpful and responsive. We had a minor issue with the oven function and Matthew was on it immediately. My family can't wait to return.

Family Vacation

We loved our stay here. The house and property was absolutely amazing for our family of 14! So many amenities at the house and the short walk to beach was perfect. 50th Wedding Anniversary

Gem of the Ocean property was perfect for our family. Plenty of room inside with nice amenities. The back yard was the gem for us with the pool, hot tub, putting green, corn hole and a volley ball court we used for ladder golf. There was also plenty of areas in the backyard for shade or sun bathing which ever you were in the mood for. . Access to the beach was right across the street which gave us multiple options everyday. Matthew the owner was very accessible and gave us very informative, detailed insights to the house and surrounding area before our trip.

The house was nice and the weather was great. Short walk to the beach. The house has many bees by the pool which was difficult with the children even with cans of bug spray. The house needed better cleaning by staff.. we had to clean the floors and clean items like the coffee pot upon arrival. Many cob webs throughout.

Great stay at an awesome place

The property is conveniently located with public beach access within very close and convenient proximity. This rental property is designed to delight the tenants just as if they are the owners themselves. Specifically, lots of attention to details, modern appliances, and beautiful landscaping with well thought out amenities like volley ball court and putt putt golf . Details, details, details. Last but not least, Matthew Kelley is an awesome property manager. He is very responsive, helpful, and professional. No complaints throughout during our one-week stay whatsoever. Thanks much Matthew!

Great stay for a week

I would only say to not book this property because we liked it so much and don’t want anyone else to book it ahead of us next year. Location was great! House had plenty of room for groups to gather so that everyone was not on top of one another. Blinds or some type of window covering of the windows in the kitchen would help with the late day sun. Matthew was a great host and very helpful. I only gave the accuracy of the booking two stars because of VRBO. They had listed the availability as short or long of a time that you wanted. We booked it for a Friday to Friday rental. Matthew called a day or two after the booking to let me know that the property was only Saturday to Saturday. We were able to change our schedule to accommodate. I do NOT blame this on the host! Matthew was great and very helpful with everything we needed during our stay. Will definitely look to book again in the future.

First Family Vacation at the Beach

This was one of our best vacations ever! We brought the entire family to this awesome beach retreat! The beach was easy to access by a short walk across a dead end, very low traffic street and then across the boardwalk. The beach was very private just the few families that were staying in the surrounding houses, no public access which was great! The house had so much to do, that the kids weren't really too interested in the beach until the last day! The place was exactly as advertised with a few upgrades as well. Matthew our host was very responsive before we the vacation started which made us very comfortable throughout our stay! We couldn't have chosen a better spot to spend our beach vacation! If we come to OBX again, I will definitely be staying here! Thank you Matthew for keeping such a nice house for us to rent! I have rentals as well and I know it's not easy to keep them up.

Perfect house

This house was everything we needed for our family vacation of 16. Plenty of space, everything we needed and the pool was a must have. We almost never left with 8 kids between 2-12. The owner Matthew was always. Responded super fast and even went so far as to ship home the shoes and clothes my son left at the house during vacation. 100% would go back to this house the next time we head down to OBX. Thank you.

Perfect Family Getaway Spot

We fell so in love with this vacation that we've already made plans for the years to come! The house is exactly as advertised. It has so many amenities that show thoughtfulness on the part of the owners. Conveniences such as a large ice maker, mini fridges on every level, ceiling fans indoor and outdoors right where you want them, ample flatware/dishes for a large family and beach equipment for borrow are just a few reasons we'll be coming back here. The backyard is really fun. The pool is clean and well maintained. The putting green and sand court provided entertainment for adults and kids. We did several happy hours at the tiki bar (which has granite counter tops, electrical outlets, a ceiling fan, sink, mini fridge, bar stools with cushions, recycling and trash cans and storage) while we grilled dinner on the very good quality grill. The house has a great outdoor shower and an outdoor bathroom poolside (genius). The beach access is directly across the street. It's a wooden walk way and stairs up and over the dune. The same 4-5 families were on the beach each day with plenty of space between us. Matthew was a pleasure to work with and readily available by phone or text. This house is certainly appropriately named - the Gem of the Ocean! Can't wait to come back!

My family had the best vacation at Gem of the Ocean. The owner, Matthew, goes above and beyond for his guests. 8 adults and 6 kids had so much to do without even leaving the house. We loved the beach access right across the street. Will be returning!

All-around great experience!

This was our 4th time visiting the OBX, and this house is now our favorite place to stay! Loved the putting green and volleyball net! Great layout! Everything we needed! And owner was very attentive to our needs. He had a plumber there the same day that we let him know about a clogged sink. Very short walk to the beach! Loved the location. Easy walk over to the nature trail by the fitness center. Would definitely come back!

Great time at Gem of the Ocean!

What a great find this home is! Well-appointed, clean, with tons of extras. We took full advantage of the volleyball court, corn hole, putting green, hot tub and pool! Easy access to the beach but without the extra cost of being right on the beach. Easy drives to both Duck and Corolla for shopping and eats. Matthew was great to deal with--very helpful and responsive--even as he and his family were suffering from illness. We had a minor issue with ants at the start, but easily remedied with ant spray and some traps. We would definitely consider being repeat customers here and can't recommend it enough. We've stayed as a family at the OBX for decades and this was the best place we've stayed.

Wonderful Family Vacation

Owner is amazingly clear with instructions and does all the homework for staying in the OBX for you. The house is in a great private neighborhood that is very quiet and a nominal walk across the street to the beach. We had a fantastic time with our family and will be back!

Great Location and Views

We visited this property with 6 adults and 6 children. The location of this property is a very short walk to the beach and the views are absolutely amazing. We really enjoyed watching the sunsets from the hot tub and the balconies. The highlight is definitely the back yard. The weather for our week was extremely hot and muggy which made going to the beach challenging for my in-laws and some of the younger children. We used the pool area daily for hours and constantly returned to it for cooking and eating meals and relaxation on the many lounge chairs and hammock. There is something for everyone with a sand volleyball court and a mini putting green. We did have challenges with our check in as the cleaning was not ready and we were delayed several hours while waiting for them to finish. The owner Matthew, was excellent with communicating the potential delay to us earlier and even had dinner ordered and delivered to apologize for the delay. I'm not sure if it is because we are at the end fo the season but the property did have a lot of wear (trashcans missing in bathroom, broken racks and toilet paper holders, missing drain covers in bathrooms) and the linens provided were limited (only 1 dish towel, only 1 bath towel provided per person...I ended doing a lot of laundry to keep up with the linens.) For the price of this rental, I would have expected the kitchen to be stocked with serving dishes and enough cutlery for 10+ people. There are plenty of cups but limited food prep items and serving options. Overall, the house is warm, spacious, and inviting and we truly enjoyed our stay. Matthew is available and ready to help with any of your needs.

Family vacation for 11 with young children

Owner Matthew extremely easy to communicate with. Calls back within minutes. Nice touch was the complimentary bagels he provides you with from Lighthouse Bagels. Short walk to get to the beach but be prepared to climb steps to get over the dunes . Hard to carry up beach equipment for the day. If renting chairs definitely go with set up service even though expensive. The pictures are exactly what you see on line. House could use a good power washing. We did enjoy the pool and was very clean. He provided us with recommendations for eating but please be aware the restaurants are very short staffed, online ordering isn’t available, reservations are none existent and waiting is over 2 hours. Had a reservation at red skye cafe and they closed for the week for catering. We showed up to a closed sign. No call to let us know and we had to scramble to get dinner for 8 adults and 3 young children. Extremely disappointed. Same thing happened another night at their other restaurant NC coast which was worst. Has us sit on Adirondack chairs on the dirt with tables so low to the ground you would never be able to eat your dinner. So yet again had to find something to eat. While this is no way the owners fault it was extremely frustrating because who wants to cook every night on vacation. The house was equipped with plenty of plates and pots it could use an update on hand mixer and maybe a tea pot. I would definitely recommend the home as it was large, clean and spacious but be prepared when going to have groceries as the lines are long and a lot of stores closed Sunday and Monday.

Our passion has always been the beach. As kids we traveled to the OBX before it was anything like it is now. The hardest thing for us to do as a family is to say good-bye to this area when heading back to reality. The area is by far one of the best places in the world. We put our blood sweat and tears into the house to make it what it is now.

Why they chose this property

As a kid my family trips would consist of eight hour trip to the Outer Banks. Although the Outer Banks are much different now than they were, they have always been my first love and favorite vacation destination. The memories I had during my family vacations as a kid I will cherish forever. I always knew that I wanted my own beach house and worked my entire life to have the house of my dreams so I could create my own memories with my own family.

What makes this property unique

The Outer Banks is the absolute most beautiful place to travel to. The house is secluded with that private resident feel. The warm salty breeze and soundtrack like waves splashing in the background makes sitting on the porch watching the sunset the best thing in the world. Being able to walk approximately 75 steps to the beach and squishing sand between your feet makes for the best beach days. Unlike other East coast beach destinations there is a total seclusion while on the beach and in the community. It is like being on a private beach. Being a large residence there is plenty of space for every guest to spend all of your time together or get lost in your own mini vacation.
