My sister and I stayed one night to go to a cincert at the Libbey Bowl in Ojai. The stay was lovely. Mary is very accommodating. I enjoyed the view & the outdoor area, the donkeys, and most of all the beautiful trail accessible just down the street from the house. There is a spiritual accent to the decoration if that is something that intersts you; it does me.
Perfect spot to stay while checking out the Ojai area. Neighborhood was great, property was wonderful and relaxing. Donkeys were great! Mary was wonderful, let us know about some great local spots. Would definitely stay again if in the area!
We had a nice 2 night stay, the donkeys were great, location was nice, being right next to the bike/walking trail, Mary is an accommodating host, even though the decks were a little precarious for our 2 year old grandson, he was kept entertained by the donkeys and all the rocks and fountains.
My husband and I stayed here for our 10 year anniversary and what a perfectly located, lush, well-appointed space! Mary greeted us with her extremely friendly pup “Bonkers” and gave us some local tips. The donkeys were such a delight to watch while we had our morning coffee. The spa was always the perfect temperature, and the blue/green firefly lights projected on the giant tree over the backyard produces such a gorgeous effect at night! Inside, the bedroom had comfy beds and were exquisitely decorated. Full bathroom and dressing area gave plenty of space. There are walking trails right by guest parking that can take you to the lake or all the way to the ocean! We spent much of our stay exploring Ojai, Oak View and Ventura but could have easily stayed at the Bird’s Nest the whole time and just relaxed. I imagine this would make a great personal retreat spot, as well. We will save this as a favorite!! Thank you, Mary!
Splendid -- better than the photos
Wonderful private location -- short hop to Ojai and other sights
But this is the sort of VRBO that you could rent and just stay there without doing any other sight seeing
Mary has done wonderful job of adding a magic touch to the rental unit
I highly recommend this VRBO rental
We loved the bedroom and bathroom space and it really was a private little patio. The whole unit was very private. We were told that there was a small issue with the hot tub before we got there and it was already fixed before arrival! The donkeys are absolutely fantastic and I really enjoyed that. If anyone’s worried about loud braying, that was never an issue while we were there. Just happy tiny donks. I was super excited to see the firefly lights up in the old CA scrub oak that covers the patio. Super cool. The bed was comfy, the shower was great, and we really enjoyed having the space for a home base to come back to. Mary also let us know how to get to the trail with the bridges. It was a really nice paved/ dirt stroll about a mile to the 3 hump bridge and it was really nice to have that so close. We would definitely stay again if we head up that way. Thanks again Mary!
Beautiful property with several outdoor areas in which to hang. Mary was a warm host and the donkeys (and puppy Bonkers) were charming. So much to do in the area- walks, beach, kayaking- and the Oak Creek Winery nearby is now one of my favorites for grounds and wine. As Mary notes in the description, it's in a ranchy space so there are vestiges of the natural world around, but the bath and bedrooms are clean and comfortable. A unique and wonderful space!
We made our way to the place and were greeted once we arrived (late due to heavy traffic), and given the grand tour of the place. It was lovely from the outset, and was the perfect base as we explored the area. The hot tub was a pleasant relief after spending the days adventuring, and Trigger and Spanky (the mini donkeys were always affable and ready for treats!). We had what we needed and some, and it was overall a very comfortable space to crash, and the bike ride to Ventura Beach (9ish miles - rented the electric bikes) was pretty awesome with the trailhead right beside the house. Add to that some amazing restaurants nearby and it made for an awesome anniversary/birthday escape!
Can't forget to shout out Bonkers the puppy, who truly lives up to his name!
We loved our stay at Mary’s! Everything was as described. The donkeys were so sweet! Waking up and seeing them was so fun. And Bonkers the dog is so amazing - so well behaved! The location and setup is so dreamy - you see what seems like a regular house and then you get in the backyard and this whole oasis unfolds :) We’d go back to Mary’s place for sure! Thank you for an amazing stay.
Host is down to earth and just as described - can be as present or discrete as you wish. 2 rooms with private bath and access to living room and kitchen. Serene outdoor space under the Oak trees, babbling brook/ fountain. Oak View is about 5 miles away from Ojai towards Ventura. The donkeys are gentle and friendly. Less polished then Ojai accommodations but more interesting and Ojai bike trail opens up at end of cul de sac.
This was a wonderful place to stay. The room is attached to the side of owners house in an Oak View neighborhood. We had use of the back side of house with a beautiful view overlooking a canyon. It was quiet, peaceful and very restful. We made use of the hot tub and sauna, fed the donkeys everyday. Staying there at the end of September was perfect. The outdoors was shaded and didn't get hot so we spent most of the time sitting outside enjoying the scenery into the evenings. Mary was most accomodating and we plan to stay at her place the next time we come to the area. Ojai is less than a 10 minute drive away and 10-15 min drive to the coast. We didn't do any cooking but bought food from the Westfield Market in Ojai which is fantastic.
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the serenity and peace in The Birds Nest. Entering the courtyard from the street you are transported into another world-a world of tinkling fountains, multiple outdoor seating areas, sparkly lights, and peaceful views. We enjoyed our nightly soaks in the jacuzzi as well as time in the sauna and just soaking up the ambiance. Miniature donkeys added a fun element. We opted to rent the e-bikes offered and enjoyed biking the scenic paved trail just feet from the property. To note, the listing implied that the kitchen was private, but it is in fact shared with the owner. That said, the owner is delightful and she made us feel welcome and at home. We would highly recommend.
Mary is a wonderful host with lots of great tips on the local area. The room and adjoining outside area are super private. It feels like you’re renting the entire property. There is also a private lounge room seperate from the main house with a fold out couch option and the outside areas have so many lounging options plus jacuzzi & sauna! The weather was too hot to use a sauna but the jacuzzi was wonderful and the night time lighting creates a magical ambiance. The room also comes with a mini fridge which was wonderful to come home to cold drinks. Mary has thought of everything. Highly recommend 👍👍

Be aware that you don't have a private indoor sitting area, dining area or kitchen
The host was lovely and helpful. However, the property is advertised as Entire Home. This is not the case. There are 2 bedrooms separated by outdoor space, which includes stairs. Each bedroom is almost entirely filled with 1 or 2 beds. The only private sitting areas are outdoors, which is lovely in a lot of weather, but not all. The kitchen, the dining area and the indoor sitting area pictured can be reached by going outside the main bedroom, and walking around the building to the front door. These spaces are shared with the host. There is a small dorm-sized refrigerator that is for guests, which is outdoors, outside the main bedroom on a landing (not shown in the pictures). While the host is lovely, the outdoor spaces are a gorgeous as pictured, and the donkeys are super cute, we were disappointed in the inaccuracy of the listing.
Mary's VRBO rental home is split, the right side is hers, and the left side is the guests, with separate entrances. She is a kind and artistic soul who has created some really relaxing spaces to enjoy. Nice animals, collections of succulents, crystals, artwork by Mary, beautiful outdoor lights, and a water feature create such a great ambiance. A private oasis. Our favorite time was at night- when the whole backyard lights up like a million little fireflies-.
we used the pool and the sauna, but not the jacuzzi. the pool was the perfect temperature. very relaxing. and the sauna was nice as well. used by the athletes in our group-- after their workout.
There are multiple elevation changes, to the landscape. some areas would not be accessible if you had difficulty walking, or with balance. May not be appropriate for young children due to the elevation changes, and not many handrails, and lots of items plugged in (landscape lighting, etc).
But if you are able bodied, understand the outdoors, and know not to touch plugs, then you will find Mary's place to be a fantastically relaxing escape.
If you’re interested in booking this space and planning to use more than one of the two bedrooms, you should be aware that the second bedroom is a short walk away from the first (outdoors including some stairs) - meaning that if you want access to the bathroom you have to leave the structure you’re in and walk outside down some stairs to to reach the building that has the first bedroom and bathroom. And there is no private indoor dining space (at night when it was cold and we didn’t want to eat outside or in the space shared with the host, we ate huddled on our beds). So be sure to read the comments as the listing isn’t completely accurate about the space itself. From the thematic decor, to the thoughtful garden scape, to the donkeys - there’s no doubt Mary has built herself a unique and intentional sanctuary in her home. However, in our interactions with Mary, we were made to feel more like an inconvenience rather than welcome guests. While this was adequate for your stay, we will visit somewhere new next time we stay in the area.
Our stay was great! Mary was welcoming and offered great suggestions for places to eat and things to check out. So grateful for a couple of days to unplug after the holidays.
