Beautiful building that is wonderfully decorated. Host was amazing with incredible communication. We loved our stay and look forward to coming back. Just make sure you screenshot all of your info for check in since cell phone coverage is spotty in Elizabethtown.

Wonderful Stay in a Charming Small Town!

We had a fantastic stay at this cozy house! The accommodations were excellent—clean, comfortable, and stocked with everything we needed to cook meals during our trip. One of our favorite things was the ice cream and coffee shop right on the corner—such a nice treat to have just steps away! The location was perfect for my job assignment, making the daily commute easy and stress-free. Another huge plus was that we could bring our two dogs along—finding pet-friendly places like this is such a relief. They loved it as much as we did!Would definitely stay here again if we're ever back in the area!

Great place to stay and experience a quaint, IL town

We enjoyed this tiny house during our stay. It’s clean, dog-friendly with a fenced patio and within a 20-30 minute drive to the surrounding popular hiking and nature sight-seeing spots. The town itself is very small and you’ll need to drive a little ways for restaurants and groceries. The mercantile shop directly next door is very cute and a great spot to get coffee, Ice cream and local goods. Would recommend for a family of four (like us) or smaller.

A hiden gem

The "tiny home" is not so tiny, very well restored, well furnished and so quiet. Excellent communication with the host, extremely responsive and friendly.. The area has a lot to offer. We certainly will come back.

Exceeds expectations

This a great place to stay and I already want to go back. Quiet and private with beautiful view of and easy walk to the Ohio River. There is a nice coffee shop next door. Good experience with host. All rentals should be like this one!

Very cute renovated building. Just a couple steps away from the Merchentile...which has cute gifts, excellent ice cream and a very nice lady that manages it. Couple steps away to the covered landing over looking the Ohio river. Couple steps from a resturant. The tiny home had everything we needed. Would definitely stay here again!

February Travelers

This little house was very nicely remolded along the Ohio River. The rustic industrial decor was awesome. Perfect for a little get away. It was close to the Garden of the Gods for some hiking. The E-Town bar was across the street and had a band playing Saturday night. We ate at a hole in the wall restaurant called Shotgun Eddys that we enjoyed.

Great place to explore Shawnee Forest

We needed a place to stay near Shawnee National Forest. We were more than pleasantly surprised with this tiny home. We only bookes one night, but wished we had stayed longer to enjoy the house and neighborhood. The house had all the necessities to make breakfast and we slept comfortably. We would definitely stay here again, only next time, we'll stay longer. The neighborhood had a corner restaurant, bar, and ice cream parlor we would have loved to check out. paelor The house had

A much needed getaway after a divorce

My stay was exactly what I needed. I went through a divorce. Im a single mom and i just needed an affordable getaway for peace and solitude. The town was absolutely peacful. Icecream shop next door to the BNB was so cute and i got dinner there one night to take back to the BNB to cook for myself. I will absolutely go back!

Perfect for quick drop…

We hiked the garden of the gods and needed a place to stay on the way to Tennessee and this worked perfectly. Owner responded quickly. Not many places to eat so was great to cook our own dinner. Checkout the shop next door for some delicious ice cream! Would stay there again is the need arose. Check out the cave in rock which was 11 minutes away then Took the Ohio river ferry to continue our journey which was a fun experience.

Scenic Couples Getaway

Our stay in E'Town at Riverside Lodge was a wonderful experience. There is ice cream next down and fried catfish down the street along the magnificent Ohio River. In a great location as well near Cave-In-Rock and Garden of the Gods. 2 areas of opportunity: Have a gas grill outside (there was a charcoal grill), and a vent in the kitchen area, Or maybe a screen door. King Size Bed and seating were comfy. The whole interior was very clean. We even saw the Strawberry Moon from the river that weekend. Looking forward to staying there again.

Etown Lodge

This property exceeded our expectations and is centrally located to all the very best things Southern IL has to offer. Etown itself is a wonderfully welcoming small town. We would love to come back again and stay a little longer. 2 days is not nearly long enough to experience everything. The only thing I could think to recommend is to keep the shades drawn if you would like privacy ...being in the middle of town and not far from the Ohio and so beautifully finished many passerbys were tempted to come up and peer in the windows and although they couldnt see in was a bit unsettling during dinner HaHa.

Husband and I stayed here while exploring southeastern Illinois. It was the perfect location for visits to Garden of the Gods and Cave-in-Rock. Everything was comfortable. Nice to have the E-Town restaurant and E-Town Tap so close. The only suggestion I have is to install a floor length mirror somewhere for fit check. 10/10 would definitely stay here again!

This is the cutest little place! The owner was great and their store next door had local grown meat from their farm. It was delicious. It’s very close to the river, so nice views down the street. We loved that the owner refurbished this place from the old laundry mat. Very well appointed.

Just as adorable as the photos look. Was a great place to recoup after a long hike, wish we went in the summer when the catfish kitchen around the corner was serving!

About the host

Hosted by Stephanie Higginson

Host profile image
I’m Stephanie, entrepreneur at heart. Owner of Riverside Mercantile in the heart of Elizabethtown, IL with 2 lodging options available, Shade Rock or Riverside Lodge. Two very different, unique options to enjoy the Ohio River and Shawnee Forest area.

We own and operate another store as well, Higginson Farms Mercantile in another county in Southern IL. Both locations, sell the meat from our farm along with other local goods, ice cream, coffee and sweets. We work hard at bringing customer satisfaction in all areas of our businesses, including hosting. Our hearts long to revitalize the area, offer fun and unique lodging and stores for tourists and locals.

Why they chose this property

In the heart of Southern IL, the Ohio River and Shawnee National Forest meet. Some of the most unique, scenic trails and breathtaking views that have people coming in from around the country to explore and experience are right here in this area. From bluffs, trails, rock formations, hiking, historic sites, wilderness areas, scenic drives, waterfalls, and boating. Some things to see while in the area: National Historic Trail of Tears, Cave in Rock, Garden of The Gods, Iron Furnace, River to River Trail, Scenic Byway, Southern IL Wine Trail, Pounds Hollow, Bell Smith Springs, Rim Rocks National Trail, Lake Glendale, Fern Clyffe, Trigg Observation Tower, Tunnel Hill State Park, Jackson Falls, and Lusk Creek Canyon Nature Preserve to name just a few.
The beauty of this area is the reason we chose to place invest in the area with our Mercantile and Lodging options.

What makes this property unique

Our 1928 property stood as an abandoned laundromat right along the Ohio River before we turned it into a lodging option for our Riverside Mercantile store right next door. The property has been kept to its original structure and foundation, including the restored floors and the old front doors that have been restored and hang as the interior sliding doors. You can still see the old 'Pepsi" sticker on the door that hangs in the living room. On the walls you will find portraits of the old laundromat throughout the years. The property has been restored with modern amenities, while keeping the history of the building offering a simple but peaceful environment. The views out the front door of the river and steps away to the boat launch, floating catfish restaurant and the historic rose hotel is not like any other lodging option in the area.
