Wonderful Stay

The hosts were wonderful during the entire process - responsive and helpful. The house was very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed watching the cows so much! An added extra to a perfect stay!

Furst Trip to Shawnee

This was our first trip to the area and we couldnt have picked a better location as a home base. Host was very informative with directions to the house, as well as to local destinations. Perfect piece of land to get away for a long weekend.

Loved staying here! This was our first trip to this area & it was close to several things we wanted to do. Easy access to hiking & the river! The space was perfect! Plenty of room for everyone! Check the guest book messages for tips on hikes to do!

Great vacation spot near Garden of the Gods IL

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Prairie House. The large property was clean, the scenery surrounding us beautiful and peaceful and Elizabeth is available to answer any questions, always making you feel welcome. The property was exactly as it looked online and they even provided coffee! The location is ideal for Garden of the Gods and some good hiking. We would definitely recommend this and the other properties they own to anyone visiting the area, you will not be disappointed!

Perfect place for nature lovers

Clean house. Very responsive host. Absolutely quiet place. Hikes are very close. High speed Internet if you need it. Highly recommended.

Nice place, beautiful area.

Had a super time. Owners were nice and helpful and were able to suggest some of the best places to go hiking. Property was great for our family (2 adults, 3 kids). The nearest full grocery store is about 15-20 minutes away, but there are some staples available in the trading post that also serves as the rental office.

Elizabeth’s birthday in Elizabethtown

Our kiddo got such a kick out of staying in “her town” (our location was a surprise until we arrived)! The home was perfect! Well stocked & I loved how the layout was spread out, which gave us all privacy. The proximity of Garden of the Gods was great & we got to see the horses that live on the land. Relaxing in the hot tub after hiking was the best & we’ve decided we should make Elizabeth’s birthday in Elizabethtown a tradition! See you next year!

The good and improvements

Enjoyed property location, quiet and watching cows (when there) relaxing. Beds and furnishings comfortable. Air conditioning kept house very cool and actually wish we could have set the temp higher. There was minor damage to a few parts of the property and furnishings and we were very slightly concerned that we might be asked to try and explain (we were not). Nice that they supplied fire wood. Brought own 13”x9” pan for a breakfast casserole, glad we did. Basic pots and pans are there. Adults and kids had a great and comfortable time.

Hidden Gem

This was our first trip to Garden of the Gods and Shawnee National Forest and we couldn't have picked a more perfect location. The Prairie house is a little over a mile down the road from the Garden of the Gods and it's like stepping into a family members home. Everything you could possibly need is there and available to you. The hosts go above and beyond to make sure there guests feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. The house is clean, appliances are new and in great condition, plenty of towels and the beds are so comfortable. The house is also pet friendly so huge bonus points there. This house is also the perfect central location for all things outdoors...Garden of the Gods, Cave-in-rock, Rim rock are all with in 20-30min and Shawnee National Forrest, Little Grand Canyon, the natural bridge and Shawnee Zip line are about 1-2 hours away. If you have little kids this is the place for you because there is so much room inside and outside that kids can run, play and be loud without worrying about disturbing anyone. Forget dragging all your camping gear, the set up/tear down, worrying about weather, cooking over a fire and public bathhouses just do yourself a favor and book this house! You will not be disappointed. We can't wait to plan our next trip back to the Prairie House!!

This pet-friendly house was perfect for our group! Plenty of space to spread out, the bedrooms were separated by more than a wall, everything was clean and comfortable, and the yard was great! Our host was very quick to respond and available if we needed anything.

The house is rustic, comfortable, and on a nice property. The owner responded to my questions much quicker than i expected. The only negative was some outlets couldnt keep a charger block plugged in. There was a tower with many outlets in the living room while they wait for the electrition to take the time to come out. We enjoyed our stay and all slept well.

Great Cozy Home

We only stayed two nights but it was such a nice comfortable home for the four of us and our two dogs. So clean... not what I would have expected for the first time staying in a place that allows pets. We enjoyed the fire ring with stocked wood pile in the evening and visiting with the horses nearby each morning. The home was easy to find coming from the east by looking up Prairie House Karbers Ridge. The owners were quick to stop by for a minor household issue and were so helpful when we had a family emergency.

Fabulous location for visiting the SNF

Girls trip to do some hiking in Shawnee national forest- this location was very close to several fantastic hikes. Didn’t have a code or address without asking- but Elizabeth was very responsive and got us what we needed. GPS worked perfect to guide us there once we had an address. The house was large, comfortable and the sunset view from the back porch was amazing. Had an issue with mice- again, Elizabeth and her husband were responsive and set up traps and emptied them in a timely manner. Four mice in less than 24 hours was a bit overwhelming, but the property is in the middle of a field so I suppose we were in their space!

The property was very spacious and was laid out well, if the configuration was a bit unusual. It was close to local attractions such as Garden of the Gardens and Cave in a Rock. It could have been challenging to find, except that the host provided excellent directions. Two of the bedrooms had doors which were sticky, the bathroom we used lacked hooks or towel racks, and the stove could benefit from a light and fan. Generally, though, an excellent property suitable for more people and/or a longer stay. The air hockey table is a nice extra feature.

Shawnee Forest vacation

The House in the woods

This property is gorgeous from the time you pull in until you walk through the whole house. The house is close to everything that we wanted to see while we were down in the Shawnee national forest.
