Dear Fiona Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I was genuinely sorry to read that your stay did not meet your expectations and that you chose to leave early. This cottage has been part of our family for over 50 years and holds a great deal of sentimental value to us. Over the decades, it has welcomed generations of family, friends, and guests, so it is particularly upsetting to hear that your experience was such a disappointing one. Please accept my sincere apologies for the issues you encountered. The points you have raised regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and the general condition of the property have been taken very seriously. While this is a traditional coastal cottage that has been lovingly cared for by our family for over 50 years, we appreciate you highlighting these concerns. We will be reviewing each of the points you raised with our housekeeping and maintenance teams to ensure they are fully addressed. We are committed to maintaining the cottage to a standard that both we and our guests can be proud of, and we sincerely apologise for any areas where we fell short during your stay. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. Although we are saddened that the cottage did not provide the stay you had hoped for, we genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us identify where improvements can be made while preserving a home that has meant so much to our family for generations. Kind regards, Hilary

We spent an entire month here in May 2026. It was so charming. It was clean and welcoming and Hilary is a delightful host. She was very responsive and open to any feedback. The cottage is old - it was built in the late 1800's so some things are a bit worn/dated and it could probably use a coat of paint. But it is clean, comfortable and very charming. The location is amazing and walking distance to the many adventures that Ballycotton has to offer. The bed was the most comfortable of any VRBO in which we have stayed. The shower pressure was excellent and all of the appliances worked easily, including the wood burning stove. The neighbors were all friendly and welcoming and by the time we left, we felt like one of the locals. This place scores a 10 of 10 for us and we hope to stay there again!

Long weekend

We stayed at The Haven for a long weekend at the end of June. Cottage is cute and perfectly placed in Ballycotton with great views. Loved the outdoor space and would've made more use of it if the weather had been better.

We were booked to stay 4–11 July 2026, arriving Saturday evening, but left first thing Tuesday morning due to the condition of the property.Damp/mould: Black mould visible at multiple wall-ceiling junctions, window reveals, and skirting boards in more than one room, with cracked/lifting plaster.Safety hazards: A glass-topped side table was broken. An interior door with old repair holes. A mortice lock on an internal door had sellotape installed in an attempt to prevent lockout or similar. The ensuite door had no handle on the inside; the lock nib had to be used to pull the door closed & the outside handle was barely attached. The toilet vanity light fittings were melted, with visible bowing and deformation of the casing.Cleanliness: The living room armchair arm rests were filthy — the fabric weave barely visible under a buildup of skin oils and grime. We used an existing throw to cover them. Cups and general crockery were dirty, with some cracked and chipped; we had to re-wash items before use. Windows throughout were coated in dust/grime, including cobwebs and the back door had paper notices taped to the letter box.Outside seating: No cleaning ahead of our stay with more cobwebs. No usable parasol & water hose left sitting out.General condition: Tired, dated, worn & grubby throughout.Given the damp, safety hazards, and lack of basic cleaning, we felt this fell well short of the listing 8.8 Excellent rating.

This is a lovely, homely cottage in a superb location - probably the best in Ballycotton. The facilities are more than adequate, including large fridge and freezer, easily understandable cooker, effective log-burner, very comfortable bed and two shower rooms. The garden and three terraces offer peace, great views and shelter from winds plus some shade at most times of day. Hilary is a very helpful and responsive host.We had a wonderful time and so did Daisy, our terrier.
