This building is an old fire station converted to apartments. The second floor apartments were once used as bunkhouses for the volunteer firefighters. Recently remodeled and updated. The property is literally touching the Elk River Trail, 1 block from the river and a couple blocks from Main Street in a lovely/quiet little town of roughly 850 people. This is the place to unplug and unwind. Be sure to see the additional info and FAQs in the notes section.
The space Sleeps up to 4 people in multiple configurations. (See below for more details)
This unit is touching the new Elk River Trail. Hike, bike, jog, Segway, walk your dog or Emu. ((Currently, there are no known laws against walking your emu on the new trail. See page 14 for Emu fees.))) Only 1 block from the river. Walking distance to downtown. (NOTE: The downtown area is historic and small. The town's population is about 850) There is 1 bar/restaurant, 1 brewery, 1 pizza place, a small stage where the town will host various bands and outdoor events. Unit is only a few blocks from a public river access, we call the "put in." If you have a kayak or stand up paddleboard, bring it.
Some Frequently Asked Questions: Does fire station have a pole to slide down? (Unfortunately no) Do the floors creak? (A little bit!) Are there any ghosts? (Not that we know of!) but Clendenin, WV was the first sighting of the Mothman. (Come check it out!) Can you walk to the river? (Yes! Only 1 block away!) How far is the nearest river access for kayaking? (The public access is on the other side of town. Walking distance, yes. But not while you portage your watercraft. (One Mile) There is a small park with parking for cars and boat trailers and is currently free to put in your boat. A larger boat area is just on the other side of the bridge. Less than a 5 minute drive)
This unit is very unique and is historic. Check the photo we received from a man who actually worked in the building back in the 80's. There was a fire engine on one side of this building and a smaller water truck on the other side. The second floor was originally designed for the firefighters to bunk while they were on shift. Some of the rooms were used as exam rooms for those who needed urgent care or could not make it to Charleston to the official hospital.
Decades later, when it went into private ownership, there are stories of late night poker games, (verified by a local resident of the town) and rumors that one of the units may have been a brothel. If only the building could talk!
Guest access The main entry door is on the first floor. This door is equipped with a smart lock which will require an access code. Once inside, there is a short hallway and a decent size staircase with automatic motion lights and for your safety, 2 security cameras. At the landing, you'll find 2 doors (A and B) your unit is Unit A and this door has a dumb lock, but it does have a code to enter. There are no cameras inside the private living space.
We do not offer keys for any locks so please secure all doors when leaving and text us if you lose your code. Sometimes even smart locks can have dumb luck.
Other things to note We've designed this experience to be configured in multiple ways. The second bedroom can be sleeping quarters with your choice of a bed, a futon, a desk or a set of bunk bends depending on your needs. (Additional fees may apply) Need room to sleep more people? Maybe you want a short-term rental with an office. Bunk beds? Day Beds? This would be an ideal place to get away for a while and read or write a book.
The entire second floor of this building will soon be able to be configured for large families or groups. Opposite this unit is another nearly identical unit (currently being remodeled). Both doors on the second floor can be opened providing a space with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 kitchens and 2 living rooms. Feel free to reach out to see how we can accommodate your special event, large family or business outing.
