About this property

Historic 2 Story Hand-Hewn Log Cabin Next to Yellowstone Park

Winner of the 2010 Historic Restoration Award from the Montana Historical Alliance , this rare 2 story hand-hewn square log cabin was built in 1907. Austrians used Broad Axes to fashion unbelievable 'compound' dovetail corners locking the logs in place for over 100 years.
The address of the cabin is: 25 Papesh Road, Gardiner, Montana if you want to Google Map it's location.
It is a short 5 MINUTE drive to the North Entrance of Yellowstone Park.

The cabin sits on 42 quiet acres once called 'The Little Trail Creek Ranch.' It once fed tourists in Yellowstone Park. It is only 4 miles north of Gardiner,Montana and the north entrance to Yellowstone. The cabin is not visible from the highway, and has lots of grass, trees and water. Out front sit the mountains of Yellowstone Park and the Yellowstone River. In the back is the Absaroka Wilderness. The old tree stumps that built the cabin are still visible up the cliffs behind the house.

Herds of Elk, Bison,Deer and Bighorn Sheep use our land all year due to the trees and open water from abundant springs.

We like to go to Yellowstone Hot Sptings, 2 miles away. Open 9-9 everyday except Monday.
Chico Hot Springs is 22 miles north, and it has wonderful food. On Sunday, you can eat the brunch and swim for free.

For 13 years we fixed up the cabin. It was fun. There are all new appliances, a 6 burner stove with convection oven, new electric and plumbing, and heating. We used antiques and old wood salvaged from train stations and hotels where needed. The old wood in the cabin has a certain 'glow' that comes from age.

During the renovation, I found many items I put into the chinking. Pocket watches, coins, buttons, even a gun--and 3 bullets in the logs [all at waist high level].

There is a steam shower for use in winter. A 4000 pound Tulikivi wood stove [for use only in winter] uses radiant heat to warm the cabin. It is made of soapstone, which will stay warm a full 2 days after a fire.

There is one bedroom downstairs, and 3 upstairs. A double bed is in the sun room, and the couch downstairs in the Tulikivi room is oddly comfortable for sleeping.
So, if you appreciate the Real Deal -- with history, wildlife, quiet and nature-- welcome to our cabin. You'll find our circle of trees cool and refreshing even on the hottest day.

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was thoughfully supplied with items that we appreciated. The owner left us a one page hand written letter welcoming us. There was a herd of elk right outside the cabin some mornings. Would recommend staying here to anyone. Picture is the view from the front of the cabin. Thank you!!

Our family of 7 had plenty of room to recoop after long days in the park. It was a very quiet area and the fans were adequate to cool the bedrooms at night.

The historic cabin is just that historic. The restoration done by Alex and Beth is simply stunning. The location is 5 minutes from Gardiner, and along the float from McConnel to Joe Brown access sites on the Yellowstone River. The location is just perfect. The cabin is well stocked on all fronts and makes an extended effortless. We stayed for 17 nights and look forward to our next visit.Brant

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this historic home just north of Gardiner. It made a great base for exploring Yellowstone NP entering through the north entrance. We especially loved the wildlife seen right outside our front door, including a small herd of elk that visited us each evening! We also had the pleasure of meeting our hosts who restored this lovely home. The house was well stocked and we loved all the natural light the many windows provided.

Family loved it

I unfortunately had to cut my vacation short due to Hurricane Helene and missed this portion of the trip but my family were able to enjoy the stay. They had nothing but positive things to say about the place and the owner. I have seen all the pictures and really wish I could have stayed.

Amazing Week in Gardiner

We loved our stay in Gardiner. The cabin was perfect for our family of 8. The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were nice, everything was very clean. The herd of elk that greeted us on the first night there was a nice touch! We needed to reach out to the host for a couple of small things and he was very responsive and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Unique Experience

The unique experience of staying in a historic log cabin was a perfect introduction to a region we have always wanted to visit. We enjoyed the peaceful private setting and were able to explore and relax. The cabin was well equipped with everything we needed. The location was very close to Yellowstone making for easy trips in and out of the park. The host provided all the information we needed before we arrived.

Wonderful Yellowstone Cabin

My 2 sons and their families stayed with me at this cabin from June 1 through 4, 2024. We had stayed there before. It is the best place to stay while visiting Yellowstone Park. It's been beautifully restored and adds a rustic flavor to our visit to a rustic place! The grandkids loved coming home to the "cabin". The 4 bedrooms and 1 sunroom provided ample sleeping arrangements. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and plenty of towels and washcloths provided. We will definitely stay again!

Magical stay minutes outside of Yellowstone

The family and I stayed in in this wonderful and truly unique cabin in December to experience Yellowstone in the winter. The location is perfect. Beautiful setting with abundant wildlife, 5 minutes from Gardiner and the North entrance to Yellowstone park. Even though we caught exceptionally cold weather, the cabin was always cold and cozy, with comfortable sleeping and activities for everyone. The stay exceeded all of our expectations. Highly recommended.

Far Exceeded Our Expectations!

If you are looking for a rustic log cabin with great accommodations, wildlife in the area (most times right out your front door), and beautiful views of the valley and mountains, then look no further! This cabin along with the setting and wonderful hospitality, will definitely have us returning for another stay! The entire process from check-in to check-out was super easy! The homeowners are gracious and easy to reach. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful log home!

Adorable and cozy!

Exactly what we were hoping for to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday - cute, historic, and cozy! Well-stocked kitchen and bath. So thoughtful to include towels for the hot springs. The host greeted us when we arrived and gave us a very thorough tour and explained how everything worked. We saw elks in the yard every day. Be warned, the upstairs floors are incredibly creaky and loud. Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night will wake up the whole house! But that's part of the charm.

Recharge, Renew, Restful

Party of 5 adults, first ever sibling trip to Yellowstone. This beautiful cabin was just right. Elk bugling in the morning and evening was a special treat. Count the bright shiny stars in the sky at night. Everyone slept well and the multiple bedrooms provided private time. Would definitely stay here again should another trip to Yellowstone or vicinity. Highly recommend!!

Fabulous, serene getaway

This cabin is every bit as magical as it looks in the photos. Our first evening there, we were greeted with a herd of elk in the front yard. Sunsets on the porch were sublime, and the cool mountain air streaming in through the windows lulled us to sleep every night. The north entrance of YNP was minutes away. The owner was immediately responsive when we had questions. Just stop looking and book this one.

What a place!

My family of 5, including 3 teenage boys, had a great time. The house is awesome, the views are incredible and the wildlife is everywhere. As an FYI, you can walk to Yellowstone River, but it's not the best spot to fish. We had a family of Elk hanging out in the yard for a full day. Gardiner and Yellowstone are right around the corner and we highly recommend the Lighthouse Resturant.

Expansive views, excellent cabin

The five of us, ages 80-24 (grandparents, parents, grandson), were blown away by the expansive views and wildlife encounters at Michael and Beth's wonderful cabin. Montana truly is "Big Sky Country." Coming home after a long day of hiking in Yellowstone to a herd of elk was a treat we will not soon forget. Imagine waking up to magpies, elk and rabbits just outside your door! The cabin was lovingly restored and filled with memorabilia, educational books and sweet touches at every turn. We highly recommend this property and were sad to leave; we will long carry the memories of our stay with us!

Comfortable and Unique - larger than it looks

We had a great experience on this property and the hosts were very helpful and welcoming. WiFi was strong, kitchen well provisioned (with a huge dining table), plenty of room to hang out inside and outside. We were close enough to Gardiner to stop by for a post-hike beverage and get a few extra supplies, but far enough away for solitude. There was a rare valley-wide power outage and the host dropped by to keep us updated and provide spare lighting until the power was restored a few hours later. Visit this property!

Great Log Cabin Experience

The location was great, just 15 min drive to the North entrance. You drive through Gardiner, a very cute town with some shopping and dining to get to the gate. We ate there after our days in the Park. The house is a proper log cabin and quite rustic but has the amenities you need - nice shower, bath, kitchen stuff, etc. We we’re traveling with kids ages 2-8 and it was a little tricky with the littles to keep them off the staircase which is slippery and steep. If you have kids that are at least 4 years old though it’s child-proof enough. Last but not least, not a day went by that we didn’t see Elk or Deer in the yard and there are plenty of windows in the house to view them from inside! The kids loved this.

Perfect!

The cabin was awesome. Felt like home and we got the best sleep. Just minutes from the North entrance to Yellowstone and not as touristy as the more popular entrances. The town is cute. We had a herd of elk in the yard every morning and night. There are a few neighbors who are close enough that you don’t feel completely isolated but it’s also very private and quiet, just what we wanted! The cabin is immaculately restored. One note in case you have light sleepers, the upstairs floors creek loudly. Didn’t bother us one bit. The beds were comfortable, everything worked. Everything was exactly as advertised. We didn’t have any issues but the owners seemed very available if we did. They even checked in on us the day after we arrived to make sure all was well. It was a pleasure and I’d stay there again in a heartbeat.

I am 73 we have an 30 year old daughter in New Zealand. My wife is a nurse practitioner. I like to work on old things, fix them up. It helps me go to sleep at night, thinking about the next project.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with the area during my first job in the park 40 years ago. My wife and I met there 2 years later, and married after a 3 month romance.
For 13 years we worked to bring this cabin back. I hope you can see the effort in the pictures provided.

What makes this property unique

We have, lots of wildlife including Bighorn sheep, Elk, and the occasional Wolf or Bear. We like hiking, cross country skiing in winter, and always going to the hot springs. You really get the Big Sky feeling at our place. Best Hot Springs in all of North America.
