About this property

Barn at Schooner Point- A Romantic Escape

Please read the full description:

The Barn is an idyllic, peaceful escape from the summertime crowds in town. Located on the bluffs above Long Island Sound, it has a spectacular view of passing boats and sunsets from the large windows on the west side, and sweeping views of the Audubon property from the open hayloft doors on the east An outside stairway leads to the upper floor of the Barn, one large space with a king-size bed built up for views to the west and a queen-size bed at the other end. The bathroom with shower is a separate room with a window above the sink overlooking rolling fields and the sunrise. The kitchen area has granite counters and two sinks and is furnished with a small fridge, an electric two-burner cooker, coffee machine, toaster oven, etc. The ground floor of the Barn is used as a studio/sculpture gallery and as storage for vehicles in the winter… not used when guests are in residence.
The separate driveway to the Barn passes the owner's large vegetable and flower garden. There is a picnic table and charcoal grill, hammock and Adirondack chairs for relaxing in the sun. The property has a private path to the rocky beach, excellent for surf-casting, beach combing and picnics. Swimming is not recommended because of the difficulty in getting in and out of the water over the stones.
Suitable for a couple or a small family, the Barn at Schooner Point is romantic. A car is strongly recommended because it is at the end of a long dirt road, about 3 miles from the ferry, restaurants and swimming beaches.

The barn is not winterized so strong winds from the west and east can make it drafty inside. There is a vented kerosene heater which works well to heat the space. It is possible to be comfortable in the barn in November and December if it is not too windy or bitterly cold.

The barn is just a very special hide away. So private and charming. A very unique experience. The view of the ocean is just heavenly. You can relax on a hammock or walk down to the rocky beach.

Extraordinary R&R

My husband and I just finished one the most relaxing stays in all of our travels. Even with 2/4 days of rain, the Barn was cozy, warm, and so peaceful. Short walks in the rain to a secluded rocky beach was just what we needed during the rainy days. When the sun came out the next day, a picnic on the same beach! Comfortable bed, extraordinary views, fast wifi, surrounded by art, and then beautiful hiking trails a short drive away made our visit to Block Island memorable in so many ways.

Beautiful property with an amazing 10/10 view with a bed facing the sunset and a massive window to watch out of. It is in a quiet part of the island, perfect for escaping and relaxing. Everything we needed was there: kitchen, grill, shower, toiletries, comfy bed, wifi, and the best view I have ever woken up to. The owner ensured we were able to get directions before arriving, was very respectful of privacy, and easygoing. I would highly recommend this location to anyone, especially to those whos primary goal is to enjoy the islands beauty. However I would highly recommend a vehicle. It is on the opposite side of the island from the ferry.

Perfect Relaxation

Do as little or as much as you want…this is the perfect place. Away from downtown, but close enough, we spent out time relaxing, whether at the beach, a restaurant, or just sitting watching the ocean in our private yard. Can wait for next time.

The Barn on Block Island

This property is wonderful and rustic. Block Island is a beautiful vacation spot! The beaches, hikes, and lighthouses are wonderful. Be advised...the road going into the property is very rough. We were able to navigate but I think if it was stormy it could be a problem.

Block Island Escape

Love staying at the barn. Location is unbeatable! Antique books, Woody the cat, and the lofted bed with the amazing view of the ocean. Watch the sunset into the ocean each night this time of year. Actually saw a sliver of an orange moon sink into the ocean this year! Many deer each dawn and dusk! Thanks to Leslie and Sean for making this possible! ❤️

Peaceful and Rustic

We had a lovely week at the beautifully situated Barn at Schooner Point. Sleeping on the raised super-comfortable bed while feeling the cool breeze and hearing the sounds of the ocean was deeply restful and sweet. And waking up to the expansive views and the sounds of birds chirping, amazing! The Barn is charming and not at all generic, which means you know you are someplace special. And the grounds are simply gorgeous. Although Leslie and Sean’s house is on the property, The Barn is completely private as they are very respectful and kind, yet appropriately responsive when needed. As others have mentioned, it is far away from town and swimmable beaches, but that is also what makes it so great. And yes, it is indeed rustic, so if slick and convenient are top priorities, this is not the place for you. But if you seek natural beauty and want to get away from it all, then this…this is the place.

Romantic getaway

This was our 35th anniversary and my 60th birthday celebration. I had been yearning to get back to Block Island for more than 45 years, having happy childhood memories of two summer vacations spent there. We chose this property because it was away from the crowds in town and we are still very covid cautious. I also love old barns and that sealed the deal. When we arrived, we were a little taken aback by just HOW remote it was and to call it rustic is a little of an understatement, but we quickly fell in love with this place and the beauty that surrounds it. We had a wonderful week, going to bed watching the sunset and waking up to deer in the meadow all around us. If you are looking for a 5-star hotel will all the amenities, this is not it. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, romance and beauty, this is the place to stay. We will hold the memory of this vacation close to us and hope to be back.

Quiet, remote and wonderful

This is a fabulous place to get away from everything. We happened to go at the end of April because we needed to get away from everything and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect place. The setting is beautiful. You can hear the ocean from the barn and the sunsets are breathtaking. Most mornings we woke to hear pheasants and see them running around in the field. April on Block Island is very quiet with few of the crowds that you would have in the summer, so touring on the island was very easy. This was our first visit to the island and we were entranced. Leslie and Sean are great hosts. We communicated with them regularly for different things and they were always very responsive. One note I will make to travelers is that, depending on your cell carrier, cell service can be spotty. So, you should make sure to download offline Google maps for Block Island. This will ensure that you can get everywhere you want. No worries once you get to the barn because Leslie has a 5G home hotspot which makes it easy to connect with your 5G mobile hotspot or cell phone to the outside world - if that is what you want. It is also very easy to ignore the outside world and just enjoy the quiet solitude of the setting.

The most beautiful setting and location overlooking the ocean at Schooner Point. Celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary searching for light floats and exploring the island by bike. The sunsets were unreal. The Barn has everything you need. Leslie and Sean are amazing artisans. Hope to return.

This is by far the most beautiful place I’ve ever stayed on the island. The view, the charm and romance of the barn and our amazing host Leslie are what made this stay so very special. The barn and it’s location bring out the essence and beauty that is Block Island.

About the host

Host profile image
We inherited this 10 acre property from my husband's parents who bought it in 1946. The original house was built in 1840 and we have added on to it, doing all the work ourselves. We are both artists; Sean is a sculptor of stone and Leslie does reliefs in terracotta/majolica. We live 6 months in our house on the property (May-November) and 6 months in Pietrasanta, Italy (November-May. We built the Barn in 1997.

Why they chose this property

Sean's family bought the property because they fell in love with Block Island and with Schooner Point in particular. They felt it was very like Ireland with its brilliant blues and greens and its rolling stone walls. They chose this particular spot because it was far (3 miles) from the more populated parts of the island and because it was so near the ocean. In 1946 there was much to choose from but Schooner Point won their hearts.

What makes this property unique

No matter how crowded it gets in the summer on Block Island, it's always peaceful at Schooner Point. The barn is waterfront and there is a giant window overlooking the ocean. The main king size bed is built up directly in front of that window. There are large barn doors which, when open, have a beautiful view of the Audubon property.
