About this property

12 Mile Ranch

Summary:

12 Mile Ranch

The Space:

An outdoor enthusiast’s paradise in a lovely historic home! Looking for a beautiful escape in the woods with opportunities to hike, ATV, and bike right from your front door? Look no further than the 12 Mile Ranch. This home is located on 3 private acres, less than a mille from the BlueBird ATV/UTV trailhead, and surrounded by national forest. Watch the visiting wildlife and enjoy the views from the beautiful picture windows or unwind in the evenings after sightseeing. 12 Mile Ranch is completely furnished, including towels and linens, with 2 bedrooms (queen beds in each) a bonus space for the kids with a bunk bed, and 2 bathrooms. It is a cozy historic home with everything you need in one place.

Note: There are 7.7 miles of gravel which makes this a difficult home to ride a motorcycle to. The rate for this home during the Sturgis Rally is discounted as it's not ideal for motorcyclists.

12 Mile Ranch has a rich history in Custer County and the southern Black Hills. Founded in 1884 by local miner Joseph Heumphreus, 12 Mile Ranch — so named for its distance from the town of Custer — served as a stage stop in the 1880s on the Cheyenne-to-Deadwood Stagecoach Line, boarding travelers making their way to and from Deadwood in the waning years of the Black Hills Gold Rush. Later the Heumphreus family raised horses and cattle, and became prominent fixtures in the Custer community. From the late 1920s to the early 1950s 12 Mile served as a dude ranch, hosting hundreds of visitors from around the country seeking an authentic experience in the American West. Today the ranch is owned by fifth-generation descendants of Joseph Heumphreus, making 12 Mile one of the oldest ranches in the Black Hills that is still in the same family as its founders.

The property was clean, decor was very nostalgic. The cabin is a bit hot in the summer months though as only the bedrooms have AC. Other than that, very enjoyable stay.

We enjoyed the house and property, loved the rural setting. Simple and straight forward checkin and good communication. Check the history on this place if you're staying here. We are used to dirt roads and didn't bother us, be aware it is 8 miles back a dusty road.

Very pretty place . Plenty of space for a group. Beautiful antique decor . But it is in the country so preparing for mice is a consideration. Never saw them but they like candy. After that , we stored in plastic totes .

The house was very nice, lightning over the counter could be brighter. The kitchen was stocked very well with everything we needed for cooking meals. The name fit the location, (12 Mile Ranch) 12 miles from Custer, last 8 on gravel road. Although beautiful scenery getting there. Overall 4 stars.

Fun Historical Cabin

This is a fun cabin in a beautiful location in a national forest. It is exactly 12 miles outside of the town of Custer. Found a mouse snacking on our chips in the kitchen one night and there were no usual toiletries provided (i.e. body wash, shampoo, etc.) and being so far from town made it a challenge to pick something up from the store. It was fun to read the history of the cabin but it isn't accurately listed as there was more space than was described. Overall good stay but improving these things would have made it better.
