Thirty minutes from Crescent City, this charming, hand-built, off-the-grid cabin on the South Fork of the Smith River is the perfect blend of rustic and cozy/comfy. In the winter, curl up in a rocking chair and enjoy a roaring fire in the cast iron woodstove. In the summer, open up the windows and let the forest breezes refresh you. Three large bedrooms sleeps up to 7 comfortably. The master bedroom upstairs opens onto an enormous deck perfect for yoga or enjoying your morning coffee while planning your days on the river or coast. Cook up the fresh fish you catch on the world-class Smith River or buy from the fishing boats in the Crescent City harbor in the well-appointed kitchen complete with gas range. Enjoy your meals on the wrap-around deck, under the shade of the dogwood tree. Help yourself to apples, Asian pears and figs from our home orchard in season. Spend your evenings outside listening to the river around the fire circle, or watching a DVD from our eclectic video library.
A short trail thru the woods takes you down to the River, where you can spend the day reading a book borrowed from our extensive in-house library, or kayaking, rafting or swimming in the cool waters of the river or sunning on the flat, warm boulders at the water’s edge.
Adjacent to the National Forest, our cabin is in the heart of the Six Rivers National Recreation Area; a hiker’s Paradise. The historic Kelsey Trail is literally steps away. This recently rediscovered trail was the original route from Fort Jones to Crescent City, and has just been rebuilt with the help of the California Conservation Corps. The southern trailhead is a 5-minute walk from the cabin, and hikers can walk upriver up to 8 miles along the trail as it follows the South Fork and beyond. Or just go far enough to take advantage of some of the emerald green swimming holes less than a mile away.
We don’t have satellite or cable television, cell phone service or wireless internet access, AND WE LIKE IT THAT WAY! We invite you to unplug, unwind, put the screens away, and experience the truly interactive worldwide web of life. See Nature: the original 3D…Cell phone service is available from a number of spots along South Fork road and Highway 199, and Crescent City has all the modern conveniences, including internet coffee shops.
If you appreciate solitude, privacy, wildlife, birdsong, and the music of the river that runs through it, we look forward to sharing our “Bliss Place” with you.

Wonderful
Loved the Smith River. Loved the Bliss Place. It was a heck of a long drive to get up there from the Bay Area and totally worth it. Can't wait to come back.
Wonderful cabin for a quiet morning. Fantastic redwood hikes and deep swimming holes nearby. My family appreciated the lack of internet access and enjoyed cooking, sitting in chairs talking or reading, and sleeping in comfortable beds. After four nights, we had a hard time leaving.

Fun and relaxing
This place was perfect. We enjoyed it. And had a nice fire and a small glass of congac to calm things down in the evening time. Saw deer from the window. And drove to the ocean during the daytime. 5/5 excellent place

Bliss Place, Is exactly what it says it is & so much more.
As a city gal, I have to say this place is SO BEAUTIFUL. From every where in the cabin u can see outside and the scenery is just breathe taking. We took the top room with deck and waking up to this beauty of nature every morning was breathe taking, makes u want to get up early. We arrived late at night and where a little uneasy about the 1st night being that we could not really see too much of the outdoors or our surroundings, but come day break i was like a kid in a candy store going from window to window just to see the views of nature. MAAANNN, words can't explain. We did lots of site seeing, fishing, pic taking etc etc. Beth was so helpful in meeting us and giving us tips of things to see on our trip. Thank u Beth. The Smith River was closed due to getting ready for the Salmon run wich is this weekend, so that was a bummer But with the neighbors help Lisa & Geoff, they gave us directions to great lakes where the fishing was casting & cathcing and boy let me tell u, that fish was so good! We bbq and it came out delish! The cabin was stocked with nice fresh towels, good size fridge, cozy wood buring stove that heated up the whole place, many pots n pans & every appliance u may need in the kitchen + washer & dryer. We did not run out of hot water nor electricity. Also had many spices for cooking too choose from and nice tea to drink as desired. Also we spent almost every night bbq & sitting out by the great fire pit, wood was already split and ready for inside use and a pile for outside use as well. . This is a hidden beauty. The No cell phone or media use didn't seem to bother me as much as i thought it would. My family & I will deff be coming back to Bliss Place soon.

This makes us so happy. It's very reassuring that people still enjoy the experience of shutting off the screens and signals, and soaking up the irreplaceable reality of Nature. We feel blessed to be able to share our Bliss Place.

So glad you enjoyed your stay, and the gentle use and thorough cleanup make you a first class guest. Safe travels.
Fantastic place to get away from it all. Beth & Clark were great. Redwood and coast hiking close by. But the river tops it all for us. Cool, deep turquoise swimming. The clearest water. Swam every day. Sad to go. Grateful we were able to experience this magical area. We'll be back again. Thank you.
Bliss place is gorgeous- very comfortable and relaxing - no cell reception started out rough but after a few days the silence and time spent with family was awesome. Thank you for letting us stay
It was a great experience from start to finish. Place was easy to find and was ready to go when we got there.. Beautiful looking cabin and just as nice inside. Quiet and peaceful.. Did not miss the cell phone or TV!! Nice selection of books and Dvd's.. Great fishing on the river below.. Nice trail to get there but was a little tough on a 50 year old fat man but I made it down and back!! Lots of Nice Redwood Groves in the area with easy to hard trails. Time flew by to quickly. I will stay here again!! Only thing I would recommend is.. Movable free standing hammock on the upper deck and more comfortable furniture. I liked the rustic furniture but it could use a NICE Lazy boy recliner.. Five Star Place Here!!
My sister and I enjoyed out stay, The house is at the end of a driveway and is very private. We were able to relax and unwind. There is no cell service, however we thought that was a plus. Thank you again.
We booked our reservation to this property based on a friends' recommendation. It does take a while to get out there, but it is nice and secluded. Absolutely no other noise than sounds of nature. We can definitely recommend it to others. The stairs going up to the upper bedrooms are a bit tight if you happen to be bigger or taller, and the ceilings are a bit low upstairs also due to the roofline. But, other than that, its a great place in a beautiful area.

Bliss place is a beautiful place to unwind, unplug and get back to nature.
We loved staying at Bliss place! It is a perfect combination of comfort and wilderness. We played in the beautiful Smith river, hiked on some nearby trailers and roasted marshmallows at night. We are definitely planning on returning.
Beth was very kind and helpful.

Great place to stay to get away from it all.
Our family of 5 had a wonderful stay using Bliss Place as home base for hiking in the Redwoods. 12 year old grandson loved swimming in the river. The hike down is a little difficult for a 60+ year old, but I did it multiple times. Son was stung by wasps on last morning as he hiked down to river for one last look, but otherwise we didn't see many. The house had everything we needed and I for one didn't miss the lack of cell reception or internet. Highly recommend this property. My favorite hike was the John Irvine Trail and then into Fern Canyon ending at the beach. I stayed at the beach and played with the grandchildren while my son hiked back for the car. We would love to come back again!

Wonderful Visit
We had a great time, and the property is beautiful. Our kids loved hiking down to the river, and making a fire for s'mores. The area is simply beautiful, with very convenient access to the state parks and hiking areas. No cell connection at the cabin, but we had good reception in Hiouchi, just a few miles down on 199.
If you are bringing kids or people who walk in their sleep, just be aware that the cabin is very dark at night, and traversing the stairs may be tricky. Our 9 and 12 year old were fine, but we had our 6 year old - who is prone to sleepwalking - sleep downstairs.

Secluded Adventure Central
Bliss Place provided a central location for our family adventures in the Redwoods and along the coast. It was a perfect location, right on the Smith River, and though it was only 8 miles from the highway, it seemed like we had the forest to ourselves. From our bedroom window we could hear not only the river but also many birds and a few chipmunks. Every morning, we sat on the porch, snuggled into a blanket, and watched the sun peek through the trees. At night, we built fires, roasted s'mores, told stories, and indulged in the absence of "city sounds." Even with this seclusion, Bliss Place was within a 15 minute drive of Stout Grove, Howland Hill Road, and the Boy Scout Tree Trail hike where we saw GIANT redwood trees. It was also only minutes from the start of our guided rafting trip down the river, and to some secret swimming holes. One morning we made the 45 minute drive to Brookings Harbor for an ocean fishing adventure. The cabin is also only 30 minutes from Crescent City beaches, restaurants, and shopping. Bliss Place was spacious enough to hold our family of 7 without being cramped, yet cozy enough to make us feel like we were "camping" together in the woods. The water tasted wonderful, straight from the tap and every amenity was provided. Each day as we returned to the cabin after our adventure it seemed like the "real world" melted away as we drove the winding road along the river, and no one wanted to leave at the end of the week (including our teenagers who had been without cell phones!)
Thank you for preserving this little piece of paradise and for sharing it with us!

Not to be missed!
Our daughter arranged a trip for my husband's retirement, and we couldn't have found a better space to explore the Redwoods from! The cabin was huge, beautiful, and filled with the special touches one hopes for. We had a library, music selection, groceries, washer/dryer, wood for the stove, and the most comfortable beds/bedding on the planet! Beth, the manager, stopped by to check in and see if we had any questions. We can't wait to come back! It was lovely to be "off the grid" in such luxury and thoughtful appointments! Thanks to Dan and Sarah for opening up this amazing space!

This place rocks
Location is wonderful , it's off the grid but you would never know. It is set up to handle what we needed for a week. There is hiking near by and endless fire roads in to the mountains. The ocean is just a short drive away. The redwoods are with in 10 miles of the cabin. The cabin is clean ,up to date and had great beds.

About the host
Hosted by Dan York
We live in the Sacramento and both work in environmental careers where we can exercise our shared passion of saving the planet. Spending time here on the Smith River is a way for us to recharge our souls and reconnect with the natural world we cherish. We call this cabin our 'Bliss Place' in honor of our beloved friend, mentor and poet-jester Peter Douglas, who followed his bliss all the way to the South Fork, and then brought us along for the ride. We hope it inspires you to protect something you love. ~Sarah & Dan
