About this property

Blue Heron Farm Waterfront Chalet

About this space
Relax and unwind at the Chalet on Blue Heron Farm, a waterfront rustic retreat on the upper reaches of the Chester River. Tucked away on a 127 acre fourth-generation organic farm, the River Chalet is a peaceful and private getaway situated just 15 minutes from historic Chestertown. This recently restored 3-bedroom, 2 bath home features a giant wrap-around deck overlooking the river and floor-to-ceiling windows with serene waterfront views.
The space
This chalet-style house was built in 1977, and we’ve recently updated the kitchen, bedrooms and bath.

The main entrance to the house leads into a full-size kitchen with stainless steel dishwasher, electric stove/oven, fridge, filtered drinking water, and cookware. Whether making a pot of coffee or cooking a feast, the kitchen is complete with everything you need to feel right at home.

Around the corner from the kitchen is the downstairs bedroom and bath. The bedroom includes a queen sized bed, closet, and a dresser. The downstairs bathroom is a compact design with a shower and small vanity. All linens and towels are included with the house.

The first level also features the great room- an open concept space with floor-to-ceiling windows featuring a living room and dining area overlooking the Chester River. The living room is set up as a cozy gathering space to hang out with your loved ones. The space includes a couch, futon, two chairs, television (with Roku), puzzles, and books. Across the room is the dining area with a large farmhouse table that seats up to 8.

The great room leads to an open staircase that takes you to the second level. This area includes two bedrooms and a full bath. The first bedroom includes a queen-sized bed, closet, dresser, and balcony. The second bedroom includes two extra-long twin beds, a closet, dresser, and balcony. The two rooms share the upstairs bathroom with a large vanity, shower, and bathtub.

The great room also opens up to a wrap-around deck complete with a grill and outdoor seating. This is the spot to catch world-class sunsets!

Just a short walk down the path in front of the house leads to a private dock with kayaks available for exploring this beautiful part of the river. The dock can also accommodate shallow-draft boats.

The farm has miles of gorgeous trails for you to enjoy in the spring, summer, and early fall.

Finally, the River Chalet is just a 1/4 mile from the home where my wife and I live with our 3 kids. We are on-call if you need us, but otherwise offer total privacy during your stay.
Other things to note
Please note the following:
1. At certain times of the year, ticks are abundant in our region. Being in the woods increases your risk of tick exposure. We strongly recommend staying on the property trails, avoiding tall grasses, and using bug spray (specifically on your feet and ankles). For more information, please contact us directly.
2. Because we are out in the country, the house has well water. The water has natural minerals in it including sulfur, which can sometimes emit an odor. This water has been tested and is safe to use, however we provide bottled water for drinking.

We had an amazing stay on this picturesque slice of the Eastern Shore. The house is perfectly situated for stunning sunsets with ample outdoor space. We loved being able to cook out dinner while taking in wildlife and the water.Ben, our host, was quick to respond to questions and left a super helpful binder of suggestions.

If you are looking for a lot of peace and quiet on the Chester River, this is the place for you. We didn’t see another person while we were there, it is secluded. Sitting on a great deck listening to the wide variety of birds singing, fish jumping in the river — it is beautiful! You are right on the Chester River - great for kayaking (kayaks provided), canoeing and probably fishing although we didn’t do any fishing. There are trails on the property and pigs and goats to visit! The included gas grill and fire pit is wonderful for spending as much time as possible outside. Inside there is a fire place in the comfy living room. On the other side of the living room is the dining room. The dining table easily sits 6 people. Its open design with the vaulted ceilings makes it feel exceptionally roomy. Ben was very responsive/timely as well as professional and friendly.

Ben and Shelley live on the farm and keep quite busy raising three children, chickens, hogs, and goats. The farm has been in Ben’s family since 1950. They are thrilled to have the opportunity to run two VRBO houses as part of the family farm business.

Why they chose this property

We love hiking, boating, the wide open spaces and endless privacy.

What makes this property unique

Blue Heron Farm is a secluded, 127 acre organic farm with over a mile of waterfront on the Chester River. We offer kayaks, canoes and miles of well maintained hiking trails. This farm is also often referred to as “dog heaven.” Our pigs, goats and chickens are very friendly and always enjoy a visit. In the cold season we will have the fire ready to light when you arrive.
