The place was eclectic. Not as clean as I typically like to see. However maybe I just expect it to be zero dust bunnies under the bed so maybe I am just too picky., but it is an older cabin so maybe a bit of dust is to be expected. It is very unique and had various antiques and pictures of NOLA so it was like a treasure hunt. Parking is not ideal but doable. The area was very nice and I would have loved to enjoy some of the trails but was not there for that, so maybe another time. Hosts are very kind and responsive.

Thank you for your review and for your kind comments about the cottage’s character and our responsiveness.
As this was our first rental of the season, a significant amount of time and attention went into preparing the property—particularly the outdoor spaces. This included replacing porch cushions, scrubbing floors and walls, and thoroughly cleaning the interior to ensure everything was ready for guests.
That said, as a historic cabin in a wooded setting, a certain amount of dust can occasionally settle, even after a detailed cleaning, particularly in less frequently accessed areas, like under a bed.
We appreciate your feedback and are glad you enjoyed the uniqueness of the home.
Stayed here a few years back for the 4th and this year again for the 4th. Always a good time quiet neighborhood. Good for relaxing and close to Hershey park. Will be coming back more often now that my son is a little older!
This is a cozy cottage high up in the trees. I’ve stayed in Gretna before and have always enjoyed it. This cottage was a bit more remote, which is perfect for peace and serenity. The cottage decor was enjoyable. I think with a few updates and ongoing cleaning and maintenance this cottage would be perfect.
Comfortable, charming, eclectic cottage with welcoming wrap around porch surrounded by tall rhododendrons. Walkable neighborhood. Great place to slow down and reconnect with self and others.
This was our 2nd time staying at The Cottage in the Woods, and it was just as nice as the first time. Staying in Mt. Gretna is magical, and we hope to do it again soon.
If you like rustic, well-worn comfort, you’ll love this property located in an intimate community of cottages straddling a densely wooded mountainside. Access is a bit rough, and there are steep stairs to the porch and between floors inside as well. But the porch is heavenly, a place to relax and commune cheek to jowl with nature.
Property great. Cleaning company not doing their job Wonderful cottage.

We apologize for our cottage not being up to your cleanliness standards. I have been recovering from cancer surgery and have had to rely on others to prepare the cottage. Do you have any specifics where we may improve. Thank you
We absolutely adored staying at this adorable cottage. We were looking for an authentic Gretna experience and that’s exactly what we got. From the carefully curated antiques to the peaceful perfection of the wraparound porch, my partner and I got the rest, relaxation, and regeneration we sought out.
Our family was looking for a weekend get-a-way as a substitute for our vacation bc of COVID. This place was just the ticket. A great location near a bike path/lake and loved spending time on the wrap-around deck. Thank you, William!

Thank you so much. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have been busy over the past few months improving the cottage. New Roof, Central heat and AC, All carpeting upstairs has been removed and floors sanded and refinished. New Paint both interior and exterior. Trying our best to make the cottage a fun place to get away.

We loved the location, learning about the area, and thoroughly enjoyed the funkiness of this home. Being the first fall-season guests, we had trouble locating which house and how to get to it because it was already dark outside when we arrived. The owner was quick to answer the phone and help us out. These are not negative items but if you're not able to maneuver steps or have trouble with uneven ground, this rental may not be a good choice for you. The beauty and uniqueness of the setting and home come with outside and inside stairs to conquer and uneven ground/pathways.
This little cottage was fabulous! The interior was comfortable and cute. There was a little play area upstairs. The beds were cozy, but not quite long enough if you're over 5'10".
I Loved the porch!
We'll definitely return if we get the chance.

Thank you Samantha. I am very happy that you enjoyed the cottage!!!!
Absolutely loved this place! Was on a work/mini vacation and everything was fantastic. Wifi was great, the cottage was whimsical, clean, and comfortable. Hosts were super responsive (no issues, just had questions about a few things.) Beds comfortable, porch was awesome. Loved it.
Loved the colorful, funky kitchen and interesting collection of vintage furniture and decor. The wooded surroundings were beautiful, felt like we were in a treehouse when we sat on the porch. The narrow stairs were difficult for an elderly relative to navigate, but since they we’re staying elsewhere it wasn’t a problem.
I loved relaxing on the large porch in the mornings with a cup of coffee. The cottage was exactly as advertised. My only complaints were that we were expected to bring our own sheets, which seemed strange to me, and there was no hand soap in the upstairs bathroom. Otherwise it was a great stay and I would definitely stay again.

Hi,
I am so sorry that you misunderstood and will need to re write the welcome letter. We do offer sheets and towels complimentary which are in the linen closet in the main bathroom. We do ask that you wash them and return to the linen closet them for the next guest. We provide laundry deturgent for this. We don't really provide laundry services. And, we do provide soaps etc in the main bathroom. I will take your advice and have my cleaning team put soaps on the second floor also. Thank you for your comments.
The cottage is in a very picturesque community. It's very quiet and the trees and rhododendrons make it feel like you're in a tree house. The location is really good if you're going into Hershey, Harrisburg or Lancaster county.. The cottage had many antiques and was decorated wonderfully. The beds were a bit small and the couch a bit thin, but allowances can be given for the décor. Overall, I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
This place was fantastic! The cottage was the perfect size for a friend and I to escape the madness going on in the world right now. The porch has amazing views and listening to the tree frogs at night was so serene. I loved everything about this place! There is no parking now because the spot is now considered a handicap spot, but parking on the street was only a few yards away and the owner provided parking passes, so this did not disrupt our visit at all. If you want a place to relax, this is the perfect spot!!!

About the host

Our cottage is truly a mother–daughter labor of love. After losing my father, my mother and I wanted a way to stay connected to him and preserve one of the places he loved most. What started as caring for a family cottage became a meaningful way for us to spend time together, keep his memory alive, and share Mount Gretna with others.
Mount Gretna has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up spending summers here — swimming at the lake, walking to the playground, and enjoying everything the Chautauqua had to offer. Surrounded by trees, cottages, music, and the lake, it always felt like a place where time slowed down.
As I got older, my connection to Mount Gretna only deepened. I worked summers at the lake during high school, and later, after becoming a mother myself, I began creating those same memories with my own children.
My father especially loved this cottage for its vintage charm, colorful personality, and peaceful porch where you could hear music drifting over from the Playhouse in the evenings.
Today, managing the cottage together has brought my mother and me closer than ever. We hope you fall in love with Mount Gretna the same way our family did many years ago.
Why they chose this property
We had dreamed about owning a cottage in the Mount Gretna Chautauqua for many years, but never quite found the right one — until this house came along. The moment we saw it, tucked up in the trees with its incredible porch and perfect location close to everything, it immediately felt special.
When my mother first came to see the cottage, she brought her best friend along. As they were driving through the neighborhood, her friend casually mentioned that someone she had known for years lived somewhere nearby — though she wasn’t exactly sure where. Moments later, that very friend unexpectedly walked outside from the neighboring cottage, and they realized they would be next-door neighbors. It felt too perfect to be a coincidence, and in that moment, it truly felt like the house was meant to be ours.
What we love most about this location is that it offers the best of Mount Gretna. The cottage feels peaceful and tucked away in the woods, yet you are just a short walk from the Playhouse, the lake, the Jigger Shop, the playground, basketball courts, gift shops, and many of the experiences that make Mount Gretna so special.
In the evenings, sitting on the porch listening to music drifting from the Playhouse is pure magic — and one of the many reasons my father fell in love with this home from the very beginning.
What makes this property unique
What makes our cottage truly unique is the feeling you get the moment you arrive. Perched high above the street among the trees, the oversized front porch feels like a peaceful treehouse retreat — private, relaxing, and unlike anything else in Mount Gretna. Sitting on the porch in the evening while music drifts over from the Playhouse is one of the most magical parts of staying here.
Originally built in the 1890s, the cottage still holds much of its original romantic charm while blending in colorful vintage décor, eclectic artwork, and subtle French Quarter-inspired touches throughout the home. It feels cozy, artistic, collected over time, and full of personality rather than overly modern or generic.
The location is another part of what makes the property so special. You are tucked away in the trees, yet only a short walk from the lake, Playhouse, Jigger Shop, playground, basketball courts, and many of the activities that make Mount Gretna such a beloved summer destination.
The kitchen is also thoughtfully stocked for guests who truly enjoy spending time in the home, complete with Fiesta dinnerware, cast iron cookware, and everything needed for cooking, gathering, and relaxing after a day at the lake.
More than anything, this cottage simply has a warmth and character that is hard to describe — it feels lived in, loved, and deeply connected to the history and spirit of the Mount Gretna Chautauqua.
