About this property

WATER VIEWS of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in a Garden Setting

THE LOCATION IS SUNNY AND BRIGHT on the southwest side of San Juan with distant views of the mountains and the sea. The cottage is in a quiet setting on a 6 &2/3 acre horse "ranch. This is a rural residential area. There are neighboring houses so you might expect to hear occasional landscaping maintenance.. The parcels in this area are from 5 to 10 acres. This property is NOT waterfront but water views. There is no immediate water access from this property, however, there is a lovely county beach within 20 minutes walking distance. The main house, where we live, is about 15 feet corner to corner from the cottage, however, there is privacy between with dense gardens and a decorative gate.. The guest cottage was here when we bought the property. We rarely use the cottage so we thought we would share it with others. Your privacy inside and near the cottage is assured; we will never intrude in your space, however, if you are seeking completed seclusion with absolutely no one nearby then this is NOT the place for you.
There are two outdoor patios. The one on the water side has a table & 2 chairs & a propane BBQ. The other smaller stone patio is on the opposite side in the garden with two chairs as well. The hot tub is in the garden between the main house and the cottage which is landscaped with dense foliage and fencing.

We are walking distance to secluded Eagle Cove with a sandy beach, great for relaxing & wading. Walk or drive the short distance to nearby American Camp National Park for hiking opportunities, more beaches and island history information at the ranger station. American Camp is about 2,000 acres of prairie, woods and miles of beaches.
You can expect to see us around the property tending to the garden and the horses.

The cottage is located on the "sunny" southwest side with views of the sea and the mountains. The cottage is situated on a 6 & 1/2 acre "horse ranch" in a quiet rural residential area with parcels ranging from 3 & 1/2 acres to 10 acres. The nearest neighbor is 250 ft. from the cottage and the next closest is about 350 ft. away. Though the main house is about 20 ft. from the guest cottage, it is private. There is no immediate access to the water, however, a 15 minute walk will take you to nearby Eagle Cove Beach and also to the entrance of American Camp National Park with more beaches & trails. Visitors can have beach fires at South Beach which is within the park boundary.
There are two patios adjacent to the cottage; one has a table & chairs and BBQ, The other patio on the opposite side is situated in a large perennial flower garden with chairs provided as well; a pleasant and shady spot to enjoy the hummingbirds and flowers. The hot tub is also in the garden.

beach at American Camp Park.
We are just a 12 minute drive to Friday Harbor.

The interior design is a mix of world motifs acquired during our travels featuring oriental rugs, and European accessories and has a French Provence influence. There is also a lovely gas fireplace for romantic evenings.

Wake up to a view of a nature garden from your bedroom with a comfortable queen size bed. The elegant deluxe bathroom has a claw foot tub and toilet and vanity, Italian tiles and marble, heated floors and heated towel rack. The second bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with heated floors. Outside there is a patio with a table and chairs. Outside the French doors is a perennial flower garden.
CLEANING: The owner does all the cleaning and maintenance to the highest standards using disinfectant sprays and cleaners. All surfaces will be cleaned and the cottage will be aired out between guests, 30- 48 hours will be spaced between each renter.
CANCELLATION POLICY: 100% refund 14 days prior, 50% refund 7 days prior.

Positive welcome to San Juan Island

Warm and eclectic cottage with a sense of privacy created by abundant plantings. Well behaved horses, dogs, and cats were a delight to interact with. Excellent resources for exploring the island provided by the hosts with very helpful recommendations.

Perfect Getaway

My stay at the cottage was perfect. The cottage itself is beautiful, immaculately clean, and perfectly equipped. The location is fantastic and the property owners are both wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed relaxing on the patio and overlooking the sea at sunset. I very much look forward to returning for another stay hopefully sometime soon.

Perfect Getaway Cottage

Mary and Fred’s Garden Cottage by the Sea was just as billed! Fantastic view of the water, peaceful and quiet. Out of town location, yet close to everything. Perfect spot to stay on San Juan Island. The cottage is beautifully finished, clean and has everything you would need. The 2 cats, and 2 dogs came by to visit. They were welcome whenever they happened by. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Loveliest cottage on San Juan Island

We've stayed many times on the northern part of SJ Island. This was our first time on the southern end and it simply could not have been any nicer. The cottage is exceptional! Lovely furnishings, view of the sound and Olympic Mountains, fabulous yard with the most amazing gardens. Perfect both inside and out, both extremely comfortable and very artistic. Comfortable, quiet and our hosts were very friendly and provided us with a peaceful, quiet, private and restful 4 days. I could have stayed for 4 weeks!! Thank you and we hope to be able to return soon - Sarah and Tim

Beautiful Property

We rented this property as a gift to our son and his bride for their honeymoon. They loved the cottage and had a wonderful time but were sad to find a stern warning note taped to their car the morning they were leaving instructing them in detail that the cottage better be left clean...or ELSE. My son texted the note to me and commented the owner must be a bit eccentric. But it made me sad because the loveliness of the pictures depicted a more gracious atmosphere. Oh well... it was a lovely cottage and our son and his wife are planning to return. Maybe other guests have been disappointing in their departures and prompted the concern. Thanks to the owner for making this lovely spot available to all:)

Tranquil Paradise

It’s hard to find words to express how lovely this stay was. Mary has an incredible eye for art, color, detail and comfort. The cottage is perfect and has many thoughtful items both for the practical and beautiful throughout. The hosts have created lovely guides and itineraries that include must see places and a variety of recommended restaurants. The location was so perfect and close to beaches, trails, and Friday Harbor. The view was stunning and we sat for hours just looking out the front windows. The fireplace added charm and warmth in the evenings. The kitchen is amazing and we ended up eating in more than planned because of the ease of use, beautiful views and eating spaces both inside and out( and an awesome propane grill) . The bed was incredibly comfortable with fine cotton sheets, comfy pillows and lovely blankets. I personally also loved the claw foot bathtub! We didn’t use the hot tub, but it appeared pristine and was set in a lovely garden. The flower gardens are amazing and you have the ability to sit in your own semi private area near lovely flowers. Sidney and Dore are the sweetest, gentlest, well behaved dogs and would greet us upon arrivals. We adored this place and would return in a heartbeat. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Quiet, Country Elegance with a View

If you are looking to stay in a clean, well-kept garden oasis with views of the Sound, this is the place for you. The host is very thoughtful, having left very detailed notes and information for every aspect of the stay (from kitchen operation to local hikes, even light switches are labeled). And the home is a perfect blend of comfort and simiplicity. I enjoyed sitting outside and watching eagles soar above the water, while eating a meal I cooked in the well-stocked kitchen. The hot tub was incredibly helpful after long days outdoors. The living space is small but not cramped. The bed was soft and well appointed, and clean spare items (such as pillows and extra bedding) were available. Windows throughout the house could be opened for fresh air, and when closed kept the home warm at night. The bathrooms were also clean, and they had enough towels and bathrobes for two people to use for several days. The towel warming rack was a nice touch. The kitchen was very well equipped. It is so small I kept thinking they wouldn't have what I needed, but I was always pleasantly surprised to find exactly the right pan or tool. For my stay I was out most of the time, so I did not interact much with the hosts. I felt like I was living in my own private space. I never heard the horses or the neighbors, just the wind and the lapping waves. I would love to visit again.

Lovely cottage with just about everything you need!

I absolutely enjoyed our stay and loved Mary's cottage. My boyfriend and I stayed for a romantic getaway and this place definitely didn't disappoint. The cottage is exactly as seen in the photos, but what the photos don't relay is the charm of the cottage, rural location, or the host. The cottage is full of character and I could definitely sense Mary's artistic touch in every corner. Mary and her husband were very kind and helped show us around the first day. Part of the uniqueness of the property were the owners horses, dogs and cats. All were super friendly and curious. Dorie the "puppy" was quite entertaining in particular. Another aspect not to be missed is the rock outcropping at the bottom of their property. The owners encouraged us to go to the rock and look for whales using the binoculars they provided. One day we noticed a bunch of boats out in the strait and so we went to look. Sure enough, the L Pod (Resident orca whales) were there and we were able to first see them through binoculars, then our own eyes and could even hear when they blew. AMAZING! We were able to find everything we needed in the kitchen to cook and/or barbque our meals and there was plenty of room for two in the rest of the cottage. I loved waking up everyday and looking out at the amazing view while drinking coffee. The cottage also has a jacuzzi (that is private and decorated with strings of lights) that was perfect way to end the day after hiking and/or exploring the island. Even though the cottage is more rural and located in the southwest side of the island, it doesn't take very long to get anywhere on the island by car and we got to the ferry within 15 minutes for an 8 am ferry. The owners put together a booklet of things to do on the island which was really helpful. I recommend doing the ~3 mile hike at Mount Grant, exploring American Camp and the nearby beaches, Lime Kiln Lighthouse (or Whale Watch Park) and tidepools at low tide, the nearby lavendar farm, lunch at Roche Harbor, farmers market on Saturdays, and music in the park by the ferry landing on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. And of course, a whale watching cruise. A friend recommended Maya Legacy Whale Watching and they were awesome! Overall, loved the cottage and highly recommend it!

AMAZING STAY WITH MARY AND FRED-THANKS

Our stay was OUTSTANDING-read no more and book the cottage with Mary if its available! We stayed for 3 nights celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary! The location is perfect-just a quick 15 minute or less drive from the Ferry & Friday Harbor or a 25 minute bike ride for riders. Mary greeted us along with a beautiful flower bouquet from her amazing garden & art work in the house!! The cottage & description is even better when you arrive! A wagon to help transport your items to the cottage. A beautiful view & sunsets every night of the Strait of Juan de Fuca & Victoria. The cottage is beautiful, colorful & very comfortable & has a BBQ if you wish. Has a gas fireplace & hot tub access. Mary has a notebook with suggested restaurants, locations to visit and things to do with great maps. Cell coverage on the island is spotty so take the maps. We rode our E-bikes to Friday Harbor & explored the town & enjoyed lunch. Explored San Juan Island National Park-great hike & exploration to Grandma's Beach-saw 10 sea otters & lots of rabbits, & Roche Harbor. Had a fabulous meal at Oyster Tale in Friday Harbor, another great meal in Roche Harbor at McMillin's Dining room-make reservations & another good meal with great service at Downriggers. Spring Street Deli makes amazing sandwiches-close to a great book store. Thanks to Mary and Fred for opening their wonderful, beautiful, peaceful and relaxing property!

Mary is an artist (painter) with her studio on site and also enjoys gardening, interior design, music, baking and riding her horses. Fred is a local CPA with a Friday Harbor practice. Both have traveled extensively in Mexico, Europe, North and East Africa, The Middle East, Japan, New Zealand, Croatia and Egypt. Both of us are from Yakima in eastern Washington state,. We love meeting new people and look forward to helping you make the most out of your visit to San Juan Island.

Why they chose this property

This property is a sunny location facing south west and is brighter than other parts of the island, as it is not in a forest. It mainly free of mosquitoes., due to the the ocean breezes. You can feel the expanse of the skies, the sea, the mountains and the fields.

What makes this property unique

I was drawn to this property due to the expansive views and open spaces. I liked the fields that surround the area. It reminded me a little of Eastern Washington state where I am from. I also liked that it was not heavily forested and was bright and sunny and felt optimistic even on cloudy days. I enjoy watching the sea as it goes from blue to pink to gray with foamy surf on top of the waves when it changes from calm to stormy. You can hear the waves crashing on a stormy day.
