Cozy cottage in a beautiful canyon
Dulcy is definitely THE kindest and warmest host we've ever met! She shared the history and stories about the place, and she even prepared delicious brownies and breakfast. We truly enjoyed our time in the canyon, from appreciating the beautiful stars while being in the hot tub to the hours we spent in the creek. The whole experience in the canyon was very special for us; one that we will always cherish fondly. Tip for future travelers: - WiFi is good for basic internet usage (e.g. emails, light browsing), but you will need to be as close as possible to the router (located outside the cottage) - If you go in the summer and are sensitive to mosquitos (like my husband), you might want to bring insect repellent spray/ skin protectant

Spectacular!
Everything inside was perfect. Everything outside was so beautiful: wildflowers, butterflies, birds, the creek, the trails, and the sunrise on canyon wall. If you love nature, this is one of those special places. Dulcy is a generous hostess and wise guide to her lovely part of the Northern California wildlands.

Peaceful Accomodations
Dulcy was a delightful host; she was very accomodating of our specific needs/requests. The provided breakfast in the main house was plentiful and delicious. Overall, the Cottage more than met our needs. The only surprise I had was that a couple of the photos showing amenities were of things at the main house and not at the cottage as I had expected (floor to ceiling fireplace and TV/video entertainment area).

quiet
we had a wonderful stay! my children enjoyed interacting with Dulcy and are still talking about the trip a week later. Next time I will not go in August when it is so HOT! I do have to say that once we got down to the river (it was a little hike to get there) - the water temperature was perfect for playing and Dulcy had provided chairs along the river for our enjoyment. Thank you for your hospitality!

About the host

“After living in this special canyon for 14 years, I realized that one of my favorite activities was sharing the canyon with others. Chico Canyon Retreat grew from that love. The location is unusually pristine and we have worked hard over the years to enhance that pristine characteristic as we work to return the land to its native state.

Why they chose this property

It is not often one gets to live where one would vacation, but that is exactly what happened to me. We spent several years using every vacation to visit cliff dwellings in the southwest. Then came the interest in the WPA lodges in our National Parks and the way natural materials from the surroundings were used in the construction. Put that together with a love of camping under the stars, mix it well, and the result was Chico Canyon Retreat.

What makes this property unique

In the morning, imagine sitting on the viewing deck with a cup of coffee as you watch the sun touch the canyon rim and move down the face as it illuminates the entire canyon. The many birds become active as the sun creeps into the canyon. Maybe you'll see a flock of turkeys passing by on the way to the creek. You may want to experience an early morning creek hike as you watch the canyon awaken. View the creek from the 1935 bridge on the property and let your mind wander past the beauty and into the history of what is before you: the cultural history of the Maidu tribe and the geological history of at least 75 million years. Fill your day with exploration of the hiking trails and creek or just find a special hideaway and curl up with a book. Cap your day with a hot tub soak under the stars. These are just some of the things that make your stay at the Canyon Cottage unique.
