Cozy Oceanfront Home - Secluded Beach, North of Sunset Beach - Near Kawela Bay
Hawaii Tax I.D for both TAT & GET. No. 027-702-8864-01
Our oceanfront home, Kawela Kai, is located on the North Shore of Oahu in between Sunset Beach and the Turtle Bay Resort. The stretch of beach where we are located is beautifully secluded and uncrowded. The beach is protected by a coral reef.
The house is an air conditioned, cozy, two-bedroom, single-family home with it's own yard. It is furnished with a fully-equipped kitchen and all linens. The house has been upgraded and includes; granite counters, soft close cabinets and drawers in the kitchen, stainless steel appliances, crown molding throughout, and plantation shutters. There is one queen and two single beds. The house is not high-end fancy. If you are looking for luxurious accommodations, our house is NOT for you. It is clean, cozy, and cared for lovingly. For your convenience, we offer wireless internet access.
The house has a lovely covered lanai for protection from the sun or if you are a sun lover, there is a nice grassy area between the house and the ocean where you can soak up the sun. During the winter months and early spring, you may have the opportunity to see the humpback whales that migrate from Alaska. If the surf is not too high, you may see the whales breathing and breaching right from the lanai. Other wildlife may be seen from the lanai; such as birds, turtles, rays, Hawaiian monk seals, and the occasional surfer.
There is a washer and dryer available for your use during your stay. As with many oceanfront homes on the North Shore, we are located on the road that goes around the island, so the bedrooms may experience some traffic noise at different times of the day.
The house sits about 18 feet above the beach. Access to the beach is via steps in the sea wall. Good mobility is required for the steps down to the ocean. Other access to the beach from the house is two to three houses down the road by the beach park. Directly in front of the house is a flat rocky/sandstone surface with sandy beach further away to the right and the left of the house. Access to the water directly in front of the house is over a sandstone surface, and a lava/coral shelf.
It is recommended that only those very comfortable in the ocean access the water in front of the house. Experienced ocean swimmers may swim, snorkel, and surf in front of the house during the months from late spring through early fall, but because we are on the North Shore, when the surf is up it is not safe for inexperienced swimmers just about anywhere on the North Shore.
During the winter months, the powerful awesome large surf on the North Shore is tremendously exciting to watch. We are located two miles from Sunset Beach, three miles from Pipeline, and five miles from Waimea Bay. These three beaches are world famous for the large surf and surfing competitions. Even if you do not surf, it is exhilarating to watch!
We are located ten miles from historic Haleiwa town which offers a variety of shops and restaurants. We are about a mile from the championship golf courses at the Turtle Bay Resort.
We do not rent our house out for parties, weddings, or any other type of gatherings. The maximum number of people, including babies and children, allowed is a total of four.
NOTE: Due to the City and County of Honolulu vacation rental ordinance Bill 89 settlement agreement, our property is a legally established dwelling that is rented for periods of 30 consecutive days or more at any one time. Questions or dates unavailable? Click on the "Ask owner a question" button.

Our November stay was wonderful! the house is so cute & the view spectacular. We spent an entire evening on the deck listening to the waves & watching the moon on the ocean & playing "spot the gecko". This was one of our most special trips back to the islands & we fell in love again with the North Shore :)
Thank you so much Lenae & Lori! Your Aloha spirit is evident in every inch of the house!

The house was as advertised. Great ocean view, comfortable beds, and good shower pressure. We loved the miles and miles of walking trails at Turtle Bay. Walking near the house was hard because of the busy highway running behind the property. The owners were quick to reply with the small issues we had. The kitchen does need to have more plates and silverware added. So nice to have access to a washer and dryer. The giant waves and surf competitions were fun to see.

Best vacation ever!
Stayed here for a week and it was the most enjoyable vacation ever! The home was excellent, very clean and was relaxing. We sat on the lanai every day and watch the whales. A sea turtle also came up to the shore. Lanea and Lori are wonderful to deal with. They always answered emails and any questions we had. We definitely plan on going back to Oahu and already know that we will be making plans to rent this home again. It is so worth it, we really didn't want to leave. It is beautiful there, very peaceful listening to the waves. We LOVED it and can't say enough great things about it. This vacation will stay in our minds forever.

Mahalo nui loa for both of your reviews. VRBO only allows one of you to post a review. That means it looks like the first review was replaced by the second one. We love them both so I am cutting and pasting the first notification of the review here---
Review #7429228 It Just Doesn't Get Any Better
All I can say is AWESOME! My husband and I stayed at this beautiful home on North Shore for 6 nights with another couple. It is everything you could ask for and more. The pictures do not do it justice. It is clean (which is the main thing for me), fully stocked with everything that you need....toaster, blender, pots, pans, towels, boogie boards, and the list goes on and on. We had a hard time leaving everyday to go and do some sightseeing. We didn't want to leave the lanai and the whale watching right there from the house. The whales greeted us from the very first day of arrival. They were jumping and blowing everyday. Don't forget to bring your binoculars. Trust me, if there was a mansion that rented for the same price I would still stay here at this beautiful and relaxing home. There is a grocery store and restaurants close enough that you do not have to drive very far. I cannot say enough about this house. For those of you who (like me) cannot make up your mind, let me do it for you. This place is it. The ocean, the sunsets, the comfort, and yes the whales, you just can't go wrong. Thanks you for sharing your home with us. We will definitely be back.

Don't Bother
Needed to find a place to stay for one night before our Honeymoon at Hale Pono opened. Thank goodness we only had to stay for one night. Even that was one night too long. The pictures you see were not what my husband and I experienced. Count your blessing's you don't have to stay in a dump like we did. Beyond run down, and if you need a good nights sleep, bring industrial ear plugs. The bedrooms are on the highway. Could not get out of there fast enough to our beautiful gated palace.

We're sorry you did not like where you stayed. It was not our house.
?On May 3, 2013, the day you say you stayed in our home, a family from Newport Beach, CA was at our home.
We have researched our entire database of vacationers and know with certainty we have never rented to you.
We are also certain you cannot possibly be describing our house: we have a brand new kitchen with granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, brand new bathroom with walk in shower, freshly painted interior with brand new tile flooring, plantation shutters, and crown molding. Even if it was not to your taste, our home by no means could be described as a "dump" or "beyond run down".
We certainly appreciate when we get reviews: positive reviews make us feel good and constructive reviews help us improve our home.
Your review was not helpful to us since you never stayed at our home and not helpful to the owner of the home in which you actually stayed because your review was not constructive: it was mean spirited.
May you have kindness in your heart and aloha in your spirit!

Dear Lori and Lenae,
Thank you for making your house available to our family over the past several years. Although I have always enjoyed staying in your home, I was even more thankful for the coziness and relaxation it provided this year. My husband broke his leg surfing during our stay, so we ended up spending a lot more time "hanging out around the house" instead of running around the island. We still had a wonderful time. We loved eating meals out on the lanai while we watched and listened to the waves. We also really loved the easy access to the private and safe beach just below the house--it made it very easy to entertain our 3 year old son for hours on end. The outdoor shower is a big plus too, especially for the sandy little kid when he is done playing on the beach! My husband, (since he wasn't doing a whole lot this trip:))also wanted me to mention that he REALLY enjoyed the wireless interent this year too! We look forward to our stay next year! Thanks again.

So-So nothing to shout about
A average rental property that will do the job but not much else. How it got so many 5 star reviews baffles me. I guess people who have never used a great rental do not know the difference between so-so rentals and good ones. If you choose this rental, just know that the beach below it is unusable. Nice to look at, but not to enjoy. The owners clearly state that, but you will need to go elsewhere for true beach enjoyment. All the appliance work fine, but you will need to bring almost everything else besides what the owners state is included. So the bottom line is this: This is a RENTAL unit, not someone's home. There are very few extras, (as the owner states) unlike a very well appointment home rental. Just go into this unit with low expectations and you will be fine. Have fun!

After several correspondence (by both e-mail and phone) and our written description of what to expect, we could not convince Dan that Hawai’i is a state in the USA and is not a territory of Russia or China. We exchanged emails on what to expect as far as the supplies we provide (no we do not stock the refrigerator with food) yet he insisted he would do the dishes with his bar of Irish Spring. After providing descriptions and photos of the beach in front of our house, Dan still expected to have a sandy beach. Within minutes of his arrival, he called to complain that water would not flow from the kitchen faucet. The faucet was installed two weeks before his arrival so I called the plumber to make sure the faucet was not defective. It turns out Dan did not know how to turn on a single handle faucet.
All that being said, Dan was arrogant and set in his expectations from the get go. After 22 years of many 5 star reviews, of course his arrogance would find him baffled that others would have an opinion different than his. In all our correspondence through email and phone conversations he seemed like an angry guy we would never please no matter how up front we were in setting his expectations. In hindsight, we should have realized our house wasn’t for him and sent him down the road to a $1,000/night resort where his expectations may or may not have been met. Thank you for acknowledging that we are accurate and detailed in the information we provide. We do apologize for not meeting your expectations and wish you all the best.

Great Stay
My wife and I really enjoyed relaxing at Kawela Kai after our Hawaiian cruse.
The view from the porch/lanai for morning coffee, afternoon snacks, and evening sunsets is wonderful. We also enjoyed the changing tides and waves into the many tide pools below the bungalow. We could walk a 100 yards to sand on either side of the property but with water shoes on the flat stones sand does not fill them and we enjoyed the many tide pools with little fishes and crabs there. The secret to getting down for us 70 year olds is frontwards down the steps but climb down the rock part backwards. Also the fruit stand just down the road toward Turtle Bay has parking and an opening to Kawela Bay and its third largest Banyon tree in the world (according to our Maui guide) and its secluded sand beach. Ted's Bakery just a two minute drive in the other direction has breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals as well as its famous bakery and Chocolate haupia pie. We bought a whole one and enjoyed a piece for lunch desert every day while sitting on the deck. Two days we saw whales spouting and breaching in the distance beyond the reef. Do bring a roll of paper towels to use for napkins and cleaning as there are none.
This property is in the ideal location. Oceanfront, near snorkel spots and great beaches. I haven't seen this mentioned in any of the reviews, but it is near Kahuku golf course. A very nice 9 hole oceanside course. Very unpretentious and relatively inexpensive compared to other courses in Hawaii for non residents. The beach in front of the home is a little hard to get down to as the listing mentions, but not horrible. There are nice tidepools to explore and you can actually walk several miles down the beach if you so desire. The owner is very responsive for a small issue that we had.
Right on the ocean with beautiful sunsets just about every evening. Loved listening to the ocean. Kitchen well equipped. Bed was comfortable. Close by famous beaches. Saw 16 ft waves at the Pipeline. Lots to do nearby and driving a short distance. Beautiful walks everyday! Great food nearby. We are vegan and there were a lot of places with delicious food which is sometimes hard to find!
We could have spent another month!
Also our host was available to answer any questions immediately. LOVED our stay here!
Cozy oceanfront cottage. This cottage was well equipped and very comfortable for three guests in December. it is not located next to a good swimming beach but the views are incredible of the ocean and waves breaking on the reef. Beautiful back lawn and lanai for sunbathing and ocean gazing.
The property is lovely with a spectacular view. It's in a great location close to all of the things we were interested in seeing in the North Shore area. The owners were attentive and responsive to any need or concern. We definitely recommend this place and want to book it again. Thank you so very much!
We really enjoyed our stay at this cozy home. We enjoyed all of our meals on the lanai with an excellent view of the ocean. Sunsets are stunning and we loved the direct access to the beach for evening strolls. Definitely recommend!
We stayed a week, myself and two teen granddaughters. Lovely little house on the beach. The view was great and we could walk to a sandy area for swimming and sun bathing.
Wish there were stairs down to shore. It was a climb over some rocks but all worked ok.
We loved it!
Owners sent a detailed email letting us know how to get to the property and once we arrived, everything was just as described and looked online. I loved sitting out on the back porch and listening to the water early in the mornings! Would definitely stay here again!
We were very happy with the property! Amazing view! Very quiet! Perfect paradise!!! They had everything we needed!! The North Shore is the best to stay at! We hope to go back one day and would stay again at this property if available!!
If you're looking for just the basics with an ocean view - this fits the bill.
You pull off the highway into the driveway which is a challenge sometimes.
North shore was Great.
My family and I had a wonderful experience with this property. Everything was as advertised and could not have gone more smoothly. Will plan to return as soon as possible.
Amid COVID-19 crisis, power outage, etc. it was enjoyable place to stay. One suggestion is more toilet paper inventory at the house, but should not be major problem in normal time.
Mahalo :)
We loved the house and it’s location!! The views were amazing. We had an issue with dishes and silverware being dirty. The microwave was also not clean. Contacted the owners and they were very gracious and explained the problem. This issue was resolved. The overall experience was amazing! I would definitely recommend this property to anyone. If you want a great Hawaiian get away rent this property!!

When we heard about the dirty items in the kitchen, we were mortified. We have an excellent housecleaner that we have had for 15 years. If comments are made about the cleanliness of the house, they usually are about how clean the place is so we were shocked to hear otherwise. A quick call found out our housecleaner had been ill and had scrambled to find someone else to clean in her place. The replacement cleaner did not do a satisfactory job so we told the vacationers we would refund their entire cleaning fee. We are very happy that they enjoyed the house and their North Shore stay!
This is a very nice house in an amazing location... we just could not get enough of sitting on the terrace and enjoying the beach front... the house has also all the amenities and is very comfortable... There is a foodland and many food trucks close by which makes it very easy to get good meals without a long drive.
We had an awesome visit. All went well! House was nice with some upgrades. Perfect location!
All went smooth from start to finish. Perfect location. To watch the waves or drive down the road to watch even bigger waves and surfing. The house is very near the main road, so constant traffic all day and night might be a bit noisy for light sleepers. I bring earplugs when I travel so all good for me. Very peaceful otherwise to sit in backyard or on the porch. We really enjoyed our stay with the house in such great proximity to north shore restaurants, shopping and scenery.

About the host
Your host
We love Hawaii. One of us grew up in Hawaii, the other in San Diego. We are retired teachers and now we are Pickleball players! Our cocker spaniel's name is Lei Lei.
Why they chose this property
We love the North Shore and specifically the part where the house is located because it is away from the crowds. We are a couple of miles from Sunset Beach which is exactly what we wanted. From our house or lanai, if we see four or five people walk by on the beach, that is a very crowded day! We chose this property because it is directly oceanfront. Nothing blocks our view. We like that our house is not connected to any other dwelling and we that we have our own yard.
What makes this property unique
Our house is much more to us than a piece of real estate. The house is our pride and joy and we are so grateful for it. We love relaxing there while being surrounded by so much beauty. We love watching the turtles come up for air. We are filled with awe as we see the whales breathe, breach, and frolic during winter and spring months. We can see these things happening while sitting on our lanai, sitting at our dining room table, or washing dishes at the kitchen sink. Every meal at the house offers a table with a terrific view. Not many restaurants can compete with our view. Needless to say, we prefer to stay home for meals. Mahalo for taking a look.
