About this property

The Gingerbread Tiny Home

Far far away, and ever so long ago, there was a tiny little cottage that once belonged to a brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel... How they loved their little gingerbread house! Now, tucked away safely in Yancey County North Carolina, this enchanting little cottage is here, with us, Jacki and Saleh Nazari...
You'll find us off the beaten path, 3600 feet up, yet down in a narrow mountain valley, on the side of an old country road called Miller Branch.
If you long to feel the comfort of a more peaceful, whimsical, bygone era, then come and unwind at the The Gingerbread Tiny Home...

Here, although not far from the hustle and bustle of town, you can actually have a little taste of the wilderness as you relax, surrounded by memorabilia and antiques inside, and on the outside,
a little Aviary, woods, a creek, and animals.

After some gentle recuperation, you can take off to see the sights and sounds of Asheville's many beautiful craft shops, fine restaurants, and local breweries, go for a day of hiking in the many famous mountain trails in our area, or, in Winter, go skiing at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort which is right above us. Yes, here you can experience the best of both worlds - - country and city!

We have lived here on Miller Branch Road in Mars Hill, NC for 25 years now. Saleh, who is also an artist, built the tiny home and I had the joy of decorating it. It is filled with Saleh's artwork. Most of the antiques in the Gingerbread are heirlooms from my parents who were antique dealers in New York... Each treasured piece is a memory of the past when things were made with beauty and heart...
Also, there are three pigs, one sheep, and an aviary of pigeons, ducks, chickens and a goose - - right below the Gingerbread 's picture windows. They are adorable to watch.
My husband and I also live on the property in our home.
We are surrounded by woods and there is a large farmyard you can sit in near a babbling branch of water...
For couples, the Tiny Gingerbread can be very romantic. And for single persons, especially artists and writers, I think you will find inspiration here. Also, we have excellent Wi-Fi, so working from the cottage online is another plus... We welcome long term guests and provide discounts for those interested.

Our location is unique. We are right below a ski resort. We are seven minutes from the highway and are central to Asheville, Mars Hill, and the quaint town of Burnsville. North Asheville is twenty-five minutes away, while Mars Hill is ten minutes away, and Burnsville is fifteen. Here, you can retreat and recuperate in the 'wilderness', yet when you feel in need of civilization, everything is just close enough!

About our road : Miller Branch Rd is a hard-packed gravel - dirt road which is one of the many older roads in Yancey County that is not state - maintained. Although it's not steep nor curvy, it does waffle, making it a bumpy ride here and there. Four wheel drives are not necessary, but the most comfortable cars to drive on the road are cars with medium to high clearance such as SUVs. Low clearance cars are highly discouraged. We are just a half mile up from the asphalt road called Fox Creek.

So we invite you to come, relax, recuperate, and reminisce about how life was, and may be again someday 🌠

P. S. Saleh makes homemade pizza every Friday evening, and he loves to share! You're invited!

Fairy Tale Cottage

How enchanting this place was from the quaint cabin filled with antiques to the animals. Jacqui and Saleh were wonderful, the sweetest hosts with wonderful stories. We loved this place and can't wait to go back.

Absolutely serene!

We loved the look and feel of this lovely little cottage. Owners were kind and hospitable. Very comfortable and cozy. A little off the beaten path...just what we needed to get away from it all. Close to shopping if needed.

Perfect getaway

This was such a whimsical and unique place to stay. It was clean, cozy, and relaxing. The hosts were so warm and gracious. They were present, but not at all intrusive. I loved the ambiance and the sweet animals. We will definitely be returning, hopefully for a longer visit!

Relaxing and fun!

We Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this location. The apartment was really nice with plenty of room. The owners were both gracious and helpful. The animals on the property were great fun. The time flew by so quickly, we were headed back home before we knew it. Will definitely be back to visit with our new friends, human and animal!

Relaving

We loved the critters. Nothing like drinking coffee and watching ducks chase each other around. The cottage is very cozy. Jackie and Sully are very sweet. I would recommend this for a weekend get away.

Diamond in the foothills

The enchanting farmyard was simply spectacular! It was the perfect long weekend getaway for my husband and me. Jacki and Saleh were the perfect hosts and the property was delightful. We woke up daily to the sounds of the babbling brook and when we stepped outside to the patio, the sheep greeted us. We felt nourished and refreshed by the tranquil setting and recommend it to others looking for a romantic getaway.

Just wonderful!!!

The cottage is everything we were hoping for! It was snowing on our drive in and the place looked like a fairytale when we arrived. The owners are very personable and sweet. The room was very clean. Our children loved feeding the sheep off of our porch. Nothing but wonderful things to say about this vacation. We will be back!

Magical

The entire house and experience felt like it was out of a movie. Jacki and her husband were extremely kind and welcoming. You do not need a four wheel drive to reach the house, you just need to drive a bit slower. Overall great experience and close to several hiking destinations.

Stepping out of the fast pace of life

Saleh & Jackie were the perfect pair to host such an enchanting cottage get away. My daughter Maggie and I were "hooked" before we even got inside the gate. The cottage is exactly as pictured, and we loved it. We enjoyed the back porch and the tranquility of the creek. Getting to know all the animals was great, and feeding the sheep was delightful. We had everything we needed for a refreshing and renewing get away, ...we can't wait to go back!

Fun, Friendly, Warm and Kind Retreat!

My son's and I wanted a stress free comfortable weekend retreat and we found the accommodations perfect! We were greeted by sweet friendly pets and a warm and welcoming couple. Jacki and Saleh are wonderful hosts. They are warm and generous and kind. We will return with my youngest son next time. He will LOVE visiting Wilber the pet pig, Leo and friendly sheep and his siblings and of course Jacki and Saleh!

Welcoming and cozy!

Critters by the Creek made for a wonderful 2 night stay. The location was a convenient homebase to explore the Asheville area. Easy drives to Weaverville (cute little main street-don't miss Well Bred Bakery and Blue Mtn Pizza-more than pizza-great brewery), and downtown area, south slope breweries of Asheville. The hosts are wonderful-attentive, but not intrusive. Plus you have to love anybody who's rescuing animals!! Very nice couple. The animals added to the whole experience-I had never been around sheep much-didn't realize how personable they are. Would recommend highly!

One of a kind. Make a real life memory!

Saleh and Jacki were like something you have never experienced before. They were really nice and accommodating. Such a unique and special place. Sheep, ducks, dogs, cats, 30 other assorted birds, most of them rescues. Wonderful area to explore and my Camry made it up the driveway- no problem. We will be back! The stream runs right under your feet on the deck. Steve & Biggi

Unbelievable place. More of an experience than a place to stay. Best rental by far.

We loved the animals, the farm, the cozy enchanted cottage. But most of all we enjoyed Saleh and Jackie. They are the the friendliest people . We will always cherish there slice of heaven on earth. We are already looking at our calendars and planning on returning for a longer stay. Asheville was a mere twenty minute drive. But I promise , you will look forward to returning back to the cottage as much as you will your explorations around the area. We rated this place five stars, but could have easily given it ten stars if allowed. Thanks again to you both. You are shining examples of how the world should be.

We showed up as guest and left as family!

If you're looking for a get away from reality this is definitely the place to go. Jacki and Selah are by far the kindest people you will ever meet. We stayed one weekend and before we left that Sunday we made plans for the following weekend. There is absolutely nothing I'd change about this place. Ask Selah about his famous handy work in the kitchen... Delicious! We even donated our pot belly pig to their collection of animals. We will definitely be back sooner than later. We love you Jacki and Selah. Love Jamie & Tierany

Magical and peaceful place to stay!!

Critters by the creek is beyond amazing!! Jacki and Saleh are such wonderful hosts. They are so warm and welcoming. They gave us privacy but were always available to answer a question or just have a chat. They made our stay so enjoyable. We absolutely loved all the animals. It was so cool having the sheep right outside the porch. We loved their company. The cats and dogs and birds made it so special. We all loved them especially our daughter!! It was the highlight of her trip!! The cottage was cozy and inviting and just perfect for the three of us. We loved exploring the land and playing in the creek. We saw several deer and many other critters! I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay! And we can’t wait to return next year!! Thank you so much Jacki and Saleh!!!

comfortable, everything you need

We had a 2 night stay and were only there overnight and early evenings. Property owners (Jacki and Saleh) were kind and thoughtful, made sure we had everything we needed. The place is clean, with a comfortable bed, small kitchen area and table, plenty of room to sit. The place itself is on the eccentric side, and if you don't like animals in close proximity probably not good. But the slight scent from the goat barn was noticeable only a couple of times when we were sitting on the deck 20 feet from it, so all in all pleasant. The little creek is cool and makes a sweet sound day and night. Their dogs are friendly but not intrusive. Wifi worked just fine. It was totally quiet. We felt safe and comfortable, so easy to recommend it if you want something off the beaten path.

Beautiful, quaint, and lovely animals

My husband and I spent almost a week here and loved it. Jacki and Saleh are gracious and kind hosts. They even gave us a gift bag for our anniversary! They were always nearby and ready to help but not obtrusive or obnoxious. The home is quaint and cute. Bed is comfortable, bathroom is nice (hot shower, clean towels and linens). The kitchenette works well for small meals. The back patio is great with a beautiful breakfast bar overlooking the creek and a seating area. The sheep are right off the back patio (which we loved!) They loved to be pet and fed. The area is not hard to find, the road up to the home is dirt but we did fine in a Camry. It’s about a half hour from Asheville on highway, 1.5 hours from Cherokee and Cataloochee Valley, 2 hours from Gatlinburg, and 20 minutes from Mount Mitchell. Location was decent but I’d probably choose to stay more south next time closer to Cherokee because we were primarily interested in the Smokies. But this home was definitely worth it. If you enjoy animals or petting zoos, this is a perfect place. I fed and pet the sheep every morning and night. They have dogs and cats to pet. And plenty of ducks, geese, chickens, etc to watch. The creek is gorgeous and we loved listening it it. We loved our stay and appreciated our gracious hosts. We would love to come back!

NC Mountains

My stay at gingerbread farm was delightful and comfortable. Definitely a home away from home. Jacki and Saleh are the kindest, most nurturing couple I've ever met. I stayed for much of the month of March at the outbreak of covid19 and they helped me to listen to the facts and keep balanced. I love the animals and feeding them was a joy. I will be back as soon as I can, hopefully this fall. Thank you friends.

Return visit with friends

Always a pleasure to return to our favorite rental. Jackie and Saleh are becoming an extended part of our family. We absolutely cherish their friendship. We look forward to coming home a few times each year. We can not say enough nice things about their mission, beautiful home they have built, or their kindness. Thank you for always welcoming us back. Feels like coming home!

Our second visit here with Jacki and Sal. My son and husband and I LOVE this little spot so much! Jacki and Sal again made us feel so welcomed! Peaceful and quite place with only the creek and noise from the animals!!! Our son was so excited when he found out how we were going again. He loves those animals and Jacki and Sal are so good to all of us by sharing their animals with us too! Our cottage was clean and felt just like coming back to "Mama's ". Decorated with items throughout that seem to have a story to tell. We were able to leave the old day to day grind and just relax here in this special place. Third visit is going to be in the Spring and we are already looking forward to coming back and staying with our friends Jacki and Sal...Can't wait to see all the beautiful flowers in bloom! If you are looking for a unique experience and love animals, this little cottage will not disappoint you!!! Thank you Jacki and Sal for making our stay so magical again and we will see you in the Spring!!!
