Quiet Cabin near Acadia National Park

This is a lovely property. It was well stocked. The beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed the fireplace and sitting out on the deck looking at the pond. We choose this place because it was very close to the entrance to Acadia National Park. Beautiful views and quiet!

Close to everything yet secluded

This cabin was welcoming and well equipped. It is close to all the fun things to do in the area yet tucked away in a quiet area with a fun pond on the property! My kids had a great time on the kayak on the pond! Coming from Florida it was nice being able to play in a pond with no alligators! Definitely would recommend this home!

Perfect spot to stay and enjoy Acadia!

We had a fabulous time hiking in Acadia National Park and the cabin was perfect for our family of four. It was warm and cozy in December and the kitchen had everything and more to prepare meals. The location was close to many wonderful hikes Thanks for a great stay.

Nice Cabin

Beautiful property, expansive deck and plenty of space indoors to spread out. All the beds were quite comfortable. The kitchen, while small, had everything we needed to cook. It was a good base for us to get to Acadia. Bar Harbor was 15 min away so we could easily get to town and then have the quiet oasis back at the cabin.

Cozy Cabin!

This pond side cabin was perfect for our needs! It was less than 5 miles to Acadia National Park and it was quiet! The cabin was well stocked with everything we may have needed. The weather wasn’t the best so we were not able to take advantage of the large deck. I highly recommend Harper’s Cabin

Refreshing, relaxing, memorbale vacation!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Harper's Acadia Lodge, and its beautiful surroundings. The house came equipped with every possible amenity, and then some! A great retreat, close to all the action, but not too close. We loved exploring the area and wished we could stay longer. We will definitely be back soon, a fabulous house and Bar Harbor is just spectacular. Lulu the Lobster Boat tour is a must!

Relaxing Space, Convenient to MDI locations

The log cabin was equipped with everything you'd need and was a quiet oasis in the woods with a pond view. Only a short drive into Bar Harbor for evening activities and within 20-30 mins of every highlight of MDI you could imagine. The pack n play and booster seat worked great for our 1.5 year old. Fans were provided and used to cool off the house at night, which worked great. Would recommend staying here to anyone!

Lovely quiet cabin close to Acadia

We love the cabin, so much so that this was our send time here. It is SO close to Acadia - especially the visitor center and carriage trails. The cabin itself is clean, large, and has everything you’d need. We particularly like the gas fireplace for the rainy and cold days. The cabin is tucked in the woods and away from any major roads - this has been the only place I’ve ever stayed where its truly quiet at night. Highly recommend Alice’s cabin.

July - wonderful "cabin" near Southwest Harbor & Bar Harbor

Excellent! The property was just as listed! Clean, very roomy, very well furnished and well equipped with everything you might want to cook with and more. ..only missing the beavers :( We were 5 adults: my husband and I , and adult sons and daughter-in law. Close to everything, but private place to retreat to. When I emailed the owner with a question, she called me within 5 minutes! I would recommend rental from this house and this host without any reservations. Thank you for a wonderful week. PS- if you are looking for a fantastic day out - go to Schoodic Peninsula for the day, but BRING FOOD! Stop at the Rangers table at entrance to the Schoodic campground!!

Great cabin. Highly recommend

We stayed at the Harper Cabin for a long weekend. This was a great house. It was clean, with detailed instructions and recommendations about the house and surrounding area. The location is perfect. Close enough to everything you want to see on MDI but far enough away from the crowds. The house is very private, with a nice pond and stream. The deck is very large and equipped with chairs, picnic table and a nice grill. The kitchen was very nicely stocked with cooking utensils and even had a number of spices available. It provided pretty much everything you would need to cook a good meal. I appreciated the bookshelf containing a number of books about the area and the kids were able to occupy themselves with a few of the board games available. Overall, we really enjoyed our time and found the house to be spacious, clean and equipped with just about everything you need. The host is very attentive as well, and you can tell she takes pride in the place. I would highly recommend.

R and R

Alice, Thanks for sharing your home. The cabin has a cozy, at-home feel. Because of Covid, we cooked everything on the grill and in the kitchen, which had everything we needed. The wooded lot and pond is peaceful and yet within minutes of Acadia and Bar Harbor. My nephews were too young to play the yard games “for real” but they enjoyed trying and it was a nice touch. They loved finding and counting the stuffed moose! None of us have ever seen a tub like that red one, the kids thought it was awesome! For fall fun we did the Downeast Railroad pumpkin ride in Ellsworth and apple picking at Johnston’s Orchard. Hiked almost everyday and the weather was even nice enough for Hunter and Sand Beach visits. I was glad to see that shops and restaurants in Bar Harbor were still open. We look forward to visiting again in the future.

Nice cabin in the woods

The house is a charming log cabin located deep in the woods of a sparsely populated part of Mt Desert Island. It has a nice but small private pond behind the house. The house is overall nice, but definitely has some quirks and inaccurate listing details. Contrary to the listing, it does NOT have a hot tub. The upstairs bathroom has the most unusual “bath tub” I have ever seen - it is about 30”x30” and nearly 3’ deep. It is so tall they had to build a step next to it to get in. I would NOT want to let a smaller child take a bath or shower in it unsupervised due to its depth. It has a shower head, but the standing area in the tub is maybe 18” wide so you can barely turn around in it. For this reason, no one used it and everyone took showers in the downstairs bathroom (which is a relatively normal bathroom). There is an outdoor grill, but had no propane. Internet is good; without it there is very limited cell coverage in this area (Verizon). The washer/dryer is a stacked unit, located in the first floor bathroom partially in front of the vanity; this makes the bathroom rather small due to its size. Home is nicely furnished with suitable kitchen appliances and such. The house is not air conditioned. There are a couple fans in the rooms. It’s probably logical to be un-air conditioned for 10-11 months out of the year, but during our visit the weather was rather hot & very humid. Would benefit from AC. Overall a good cabin but far from perfect.

Mostly Amazing

I loved the property, the secluded lake is nice to sit at in the morning, and has a great view of the stars at night. The cabin is welcoming and provides (almost) everything you need, which is great. I cooked several meals in the kitchen and each time was able to find everything I needed. The only complaints would be that there was no laundry detergent provided, which is strange because you are expected to put the bedding in the wash before you leave (a minor annoyance but for the price it should be available). The oven is a little finnicky, it took almost an hour for a sheet pan of bacon to actually cook through (again, really a minor issue). The biggest grievance I had was with the quality (or lack thereof) of the mattresses. The master bedroom's mattress was by far the worst, we were a group of four and each unsuccessfully tried to make it work. Two of us ended up sleeping in the two twin beds for a majority of the time, which would be fine if we were single, or children. I was really dispirited when my in-laws (who had rented the cabin about 5-6 years previous) walked in saying 'I really hope they changed the mattresses' and I knew they would be dissapointed. They ended up leaving for the last night, opting to rent a hotel room in order to get good sleep for the long drive home. I really wanted to love this property, and I mostly did. But the incredibly uncomfortable beds really overshadowed all of the positive qualities of the cabin.

About the host

Hosted by Alice Harper

Host profile image
I have always loved this cabin and visited it often with my family. When my daughter was about 3 years old she had her baths in the red soaking tub. She used to call it, her diving pool.

The blue skies make me wish that I could soar like a bird.

I enjoy hosting because people tend to love the cabin and area. I provide cooking equipment and other amenities most rentals don't bother with. Visiting friends have told me that I don't need to be so generous. It feels good to share my appreciation by creating a home-like ambiance rather than a stripped down rental experience at my property.

There are several families who have returned every year since their first visit more than 15 years ago. Their children live in various states. They always join their parents here for however long they can manage.

Many good memories have been made here and they last forever. I received an inquiry from an Aunt whose niece had just graduated from high school. The aunt had asked her what she would like to do to celebrate. The graduate told her she wanted to make a return visit to Harper's Acadia Lodge. Unfortunately, I was booked for the only dates that would work for them.

This is only a brief sketch of the joy I have experienced through being a host.

I invite you to stay and see what's memories you can create.

Why they chose this property

I love the pond and the various animals who visit it. We have had beavers, owls, porcupines, a variety of birds residing here.
My husband used to skinny dip in the pond even in colder weather. He would fill the red tub with hot water before he raced outside to jump in. One time, he tripped over a porcupine and ended up with a few quills in his foot. When he came in, I couldn't stop laughing while I dutifully pulled them out of his foot. It was lucky the porcupines weren't taller!

What makes this property unique

The pond is one factor people enjoy. I own all of it. I have some water toys such as 2 kayaks, paddle "chairs" to explore the pond with and a new addition which I hope will be fun. You will have to come here to see it.

Some people swim in the pond. I like to float on it.

Another feature that many children enjoy is Morris the Moose.
He is quite large and gives great hugs. I once drove to New Jersey with him buckled safely in the front seat. People on the road couldn't believe what they were seeing. Seated, he was as tall as a person. We were quite a spectacle.

Some of the decor reflects gifts from friends who enjoy moose.

Over the years it has gotten excessive. I am thinking of reducing the Moose population. I welcome comments from my guests.

Some children like to count the moose and leave their results in the guest book.

There is an ice cream maker which is another item which may make this property unique.
