The Mailroom: Mid-Century Post Office Turned Elegant Abbeville Retreat
Welcome to The Mailroom—a beautifully reimagined space in Abbeville’s historic, mid-century post office. After nearly two decades of vacancy, this former community hub has been brought back to life.
The Mailroom offers a 1-bedroom, 1-bath industrial vintage retreat mixing sleek urban design alongside comfortable, timeless décor. Exposed ceilings highlight the building’s original character, while a reclaimed oak–clad fireplace adds to the cozy yet elevated open concept living space.
If you are not inclined to venture out to one of Abbeville's many delicious restaurants, the chef’s kitchen is equipped with the latest stainless appliances including an induction cook range and offers everything you need for a memorable dine-in experience. You can also sup outside on your own private stone courtyard—a tranquil escape perfect for not just a meal but morning coffee, afternoon cocktails, or simply a quiet moment under the South Carolina sky.
Ideally located, The Mailroom is directly across the street from the famed Burt-Stark Mansion, the "birthplace and deathbed" of the old Confederacy. On your five-minute walk to Abbeville's film featured square, you'll pass other historic sites including beautiful churches, antebellum homes and verdant parks.
Apart from its array of historic and culinary delights, Abbeville also offers a diverse shopping experience, including Big House Outpost which shares the old post office complex. The "Outpost" is Abbeville’s newest retail shop—and offers a unique blend of outdoor and southern inspired merchandise including apparel, gifts, grilling and cooking accessories, and a garden center. It even has a curated selection of international wines which is very convenient for those looking for a romantic getaway.

Absolutely fabulous! We came for a short stay and were delighted with the uniqueness of this property. Eclectic mix of industrial modern and vintage. Abbeville is a delightful friendly town and we happened to be there on their annual Hogs and Hens festival. Great eateries (highly recommend Refuel) and cute coffee and antique shops. Lots of history in Abbeville (old churches, cemeteries, museums). Conveniently located to the center of town. Wonderful host. We loved our stay and would definitely stay again and highly recommend!

Why they chose this property
Abbeville, South Carolina is more than a charming historic town—it’s a place where front porch conversations still matter, where strangers become neighbors, and where the pace of life allows you to look up and really see the people around you.
What I love most about Abbeville is its quiet generosity. People here show up for each other. Whether it’s lending a hand, sharing a meal, or supporting a local cause, there’s a deep sense of community that can’t be manufactured—it’s just part of the fabric of this town.
I find joy in contributing to that spirit—through The Mailroom, the shop next door, or simply being available to help someone feel a little more at home. Hospitality in Abbeville isn’t just a Southern custom—it’s an act of kindness, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
What makes this property unique
The Mailroom is more than a place to stay—it’s a story brought back to life. Once Abbeville’s mid-century post office, it has been carefully reimagined into a one-of-a-kind retreat that honors the past while embracing modern comfort.
From the reclaimed oak–clad fireplace to the exposed ceilings and industrial touches, every detail reflects the building’s original character with a refined, cozy twist. The private stone courtyard offers a peaceful outdoor escape, while the chef’s kitchen and curated decor invite you to settle in and truly enjoy the space.
What truly sets The Mailroom apart, though, is its spirit. It’s a piece of local history lovingly restored by someone who believes in the magic of small towns, thoughtful design, and genuine hospitality. Here, you’re not just booking a stay—you’re stepping into something special.
