This property was very special. It is out of the way with direct access to Canyon of the Ancients NM. The house is clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked and functional. The hosts were accommodating. The views are spectacular. The water needs getting used to though (alkaline?) but a RO filter in the kitchen helps.

Beautiful house, fantastic location and very responsive host! My husband, myself and our 24 year old daughter were visiting the Cortez area, mostly to see Mesa Verde. I thought we'd just stay one or two nights in the area, but once I found this property, we booked 5 nights! The hiking out the back gate is amazing (just go early if you're there in the summer - that sun is intense) and the drive to Mesa Verde is short. We enjoyed sitting on both porches birdwatching and just gazing at the scenery. The winery practically across the street is a bonus - delicious wines and gorgeous setting. Highly recommend!

Lovely, spacious home! Off of the beaten path in the quiet solitude of the Canyon of the Ancients. We used it as a center station for riding to Durango, Mesa Verde, Telluride, and the 4 corners. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen large enough for any group. We had a large truck and trailer pulling 2 motorcycles and there was plenty of space for parking all of it.There’s a private back entrance into the canyon that goes right on to a trail. Wish I had more time to hike but it was a little too warm even into the evenings.Bruce was a great host and on top of communication. We had no issues while there but he checked in on us to make sure we were enjoying our stay.Would definitely choose again if we come back to the area!

We absolutely loved our stay here! The house is big, beautiful, super clean, and has so many nice little extras—yoga mats, books, hiking, and tons of natural light. It honestly has everything you’d ever need in a home (and then some!). Such a comfortable and welcoming place, we’d definitely stay again. It is a bit of trip from town, but that is part of its charm as you can view the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument from the backyard!

We’re so glad you felt at home and enjoyed the extras—yoga, books, and that desert light are some of our favorite parts too. The views of Canyons of the Ancients are worth the short drive, and we’d love to host you again anytime.

This was such a quiet, peaceful place to experience the 4 corners area. We enjoyed hiking, horseback riding, and star gazing all within a few miles or on the property. The huge living space and spacious bedrooms were our sanctuary for the week. We took advantage of the yoga mats and loved drinking coffee by the gas stove while watching the sun rise over the mountains every morning. The kitchen was fully stocked with any utensil or dish one could need. There was very little we could have asked for differently. David responded very quickly to an ask on the first morning and helped us get the gas stove lit to enjoy the rest of the stay. He is definitely very thorough, thoughtful and meticulous! Thanks for allowing us to enjoy your property with our family.

Communication was stellar! Check in was easy. The house was super comfortable, well-stocked, and had a lovely view. The property was beautiful. It is pretty far from civilization, but that was a bonus for us. We had a relaxing day in between visits to archeological sites.

About the host

Hello! We're a family of firefighters from North Carolina who fell in love with the high desert's privacy and beauty. We created Sand Canyon Oasis as our personal getaway and are excited to share it. What truly captured us was the land—the beautiful home, seclusion, and especially the direct BLM access via a private gate into the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our goal is a relaxing stay for you, which is why we proudly offer our 'Effortless Checkout'. We're just a message away!

Why they chose this property

We chose this specific location for its unparalleled combination of seclusion and adventure. The neighborhood offers a profound sense of privacy and tranquility, allowing you to truly disconnect. What we enjoy most is the incredible dark sky—at night, the stargazing is absolutely breathtaking. It's a place where you can feel away from it all, yet be on the doorstep of ancient history and vast wilderness.

What makes this property unique

The single most unique feature is our private 'backdoor' to adventure. We have a private gate that opens directly into the 500,000-acre Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. There's no need to drive; you can literally walk out the door and start exploring one of the most significant archaeological sites in the country. This direct access, combined with the property's peaceful seclusion and stunning dark skies, offers a truly rare and unforgettable high-desert experience.
