Owner: Dia Michels
Manager: Alec Smyth
About Dia:
I moved to Washington DC in 1980 to save the world. Unfortunately, the world could still use quite a bit of help! I, however, fell in love with DC and never left. I met my husband in 1981 and have lived in the city ever since. This home was our first house in DC (1983). We fell in love with Capitol Hill and have raised our three kids here. We love the area and want to share it with others.
About Alec:
Alec has decades of experience as a management consultant, which involved way too much travel and hospitality experience (approximately 200 flights per year.) In 2003 he started renting out the family's second home on an online platform, a brand new business model at the time. Over the years that activity grew into a future retirement plan with the addition of more properties, all of which are located on Capitol Hill and must pass a simple test... Would they be a place Alec and his family would enjoy staying themselves?

Why they chose this property
Washington DC is a great place to spend time. The city is compressed, so you can get anywhere is a short time, and the neighborhoods surrounding the house have a ton of local restaurants, little parks and things to do. This charming 1858 home is from the Civil War era, so like many of the homes in Eastern Market, it has a lot of character. Just one block off Barracks Row, the house shares a view with the Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., the oldest active post in the Corps and near the Washington Naval Yard and old Naval Hospital (now a community center). The house is quaint, yet spacious, and with a location just 8 blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the location is ideal.
What makes this property unique
The house has been recently renovated (January 2019) and now has a more open layout, beautiful new furniture, 4 flat screen TVs, 3 clean and new bathrooms, a lovely front porch and a family-ready backyard. The house is also eco-friendly, as it has solar panels on the roof! We have great public transportation (the Eastern Market Metro is just 3 blocks away, and the Circulator Bus stops around the Corner. They go where the tourists go.) and the city is flat, so it is perfect for walking and cycling. Rent this house for access to the entire city. Entertain friends, BBQ in the yard or walk around the block where there are dozens of restaurants. Live theater, great parks, free museums and baseball are all just a few steps away!
