About the host
Hosted by Liz Catrina
After my father retired from the software industry about a couple years ago, we casually started talking about finding a place in the mountains — somewhere large enough for our whole family to gather. I am one of five siblings, and when we all come together with spouses and kids, there are 29 of us. When we found the upper cabin, we were able to secure it at a good price, but it took a lot of imagination and love to turn it into what it is today. Luckily, the moment we saw it, both my dad (David) and I could immediately see the vision.
My mom has advanced Alzheimer’s, and we know our time with her is limited. These cabins have become a really special place for our family to slow down, be together, and make memories that truly matter. In the last year, the cousins have created more meaningful moments in just a few days here than they ever could in the rush of everyday life. When the lower cabin (this one) became available for the first time in 50 years, we knew we had to jump on it. Even with a large cabin, sometimes having a little extra space is what makes gatherings more relaxed and enjoyable. The two cabins are close enough to feel connected, yet separate enough to allow for quiet time, family time, and everything in between.
We love sharing this place because we want other families and groups to experience the same kind of connection — time in nature, away from the noise, in a comfortable space where you can truly be present with the people you love.

Why they chose this property
We chose this location because it offers something truly special for larger gatherings — the perfect mix of privacy, natural beauty, and easy access to everything we love about Twain Harte and the Sierra foothills. From the moment we first visited, it felt peaceful, spacious, and quietly tucked into the forest while still being just minutes from town.
Set on a beautiful wooded property, the area feels calm and serene, surrounded by tall pines, fresh mountain air, and the gentle sounds of nature. Nearby creeks weave through the neighborhood, adding a peaceful natural backdrop, and at night the stars feel especially bright and clear. It’s the kind of setting where mornings feel slower, conversations last longer, and everyone naturally relaxes.
At the same time, the location is incredibly convenient. We’re only about seven minutes from Twain Harte’s charming downtown and within easy driving distance to Pinecrest Lake, Dodge Ridge Ski Resort, Black Oak Casino, hiking trails, fishing spots, and year-round mountain activities.
What makes this property especially meaningful to us is how perfectly it supports bringing people together. It feels like a true retreat — quiet, spacious, and private — yet close enough to everything you might want to explore. Whether guests spend their days adventuring or simply enjoying time together at the cabin, this is a place where you can slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect with the people who matter most.

What makes this property unique
What truly sets the Upper Cabin apart is how comfortably it hosts large groups without feeling crowded. With two full living areas, separate upstairs and downstairs entrances, and sleeping for up to 25, the home is thoughtfully designed so the upstairs and downstairs can function almost like two separate houses while still remaining connected — giving everyone access to what they need without feeling on top of each other, yet still together. Add a private 2-acre forest setting, full outdoor kitchen, sauna, hot tub, firepit, and completely remodeled interiors, and you get a rare mountain retreat designed specifically for unforgettable group experiences.
