About this property

Sea Ranch 3BR Esherick-designed home with hot tub — dogs welcome

Summary:

One of the first homes built by famed Sea Ranch architect Joseph Esherick — and where he stayed while building the Hedgerow Houses. Set on a cypress-guarded acre, its wall of windows joins living and dining rooms with views over the meadow to the Pacific. Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms with hot tub — dogs welcome.

The Space:

A piece of Sea Ranch history awaits at this inviting, three-bedroom home, an architectural gem with views overlooking the coastal meadow and the wide Pacific Ocean. As one of the first homes built by the renowned Sea Ranch architect Joseph Esherick, Eurella has the added distinction of being the house where Esherick stayed while he was building the famed Hedgerow Houses.

Beautifully set on one acre of land guarded by a cypress grove, Eurella is full of coastal light and comfort both inside and out. A wall of windows brings together the living and dining rooms, where you can place a log on the fire, curl up with a good book or a crossword on the plush sectional sofa, or gather around the table for a homemade meal or a board game with a view of the ocean and passing deer. The trail just off the deck leads directly to Black Point Beach and the oceanfront Bluff Trail, allowing you to spend your days whale- and seal-watching from the shore. Back at the house, you'll find respite from the ocean winds in the protected garden courtyard with a stately tree that shades the space and a private hot tub tucked away beneath a gazebo.

Swap out your bathing suits for a warm pair of socks from the washer/dryer, begin dinner preparations using the kitchen's stainless steel appliances, and bring a glass of wine out to the back deck or the garden patio to marvel at the golden hour light. As the fog begins to roll in, you can spend the evening in three bedrooms - one with a king-size bed and a snug window seat, and two (a queen room and a room with two twin beds) with access to the outdoors. Golfers can also tee off at the Sea Ranch Golf Links, a oceanfront course only six miles north.

Bring your pup along -- this home welcomes up to 2 dogs.

As a guest, you also have access to Sea Ranch community amenities including the pools, tennis courts, and miles of trails. A recreation pass will be provided.

The Neighborhood:

Perched along the Sonoma Coast, The Sea Ranch is a nature lover's paradise -- think tidepools, wildflower meadows, and redwood groves at your doorstep. Nearby highlights include community heated pool and hot tub (South) (3-minute drive), Pebble Beach access trail (3-minute drive), Black Point headland trails (4-minute drive). Trails lead from your door to the bluffs, beaches, and through the forest. Heated pools, tennis courts, and The Sea Ranch Lodge round out the amenities. Stock up in Gualala, just 10 minutes north, where you'll find grocery stores, restaurants, a hardware store, and gas. Bodega Bay is a beautiful drive for fresh seafood.

Getting Around:

This home sits on the ocean side of California Highway 1 in the southern part of Sea Ranch, with a trail that leads from the back deck directly to Black Point Beach (a five-minute walk) and the Bluff Trail. When you're not out hiking, beachcombing, or catching a glimpse of whale spouts on the horizon, you'll be a quick three-mile drive from the always wonderful Twofish Baking and eight miles south of the Surf Market, Trinks Cafe, and Four-Eyed Frog Books in downtown Gualala. Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa is the nearest airport, about 1.5 hours east. A car is essential for exploring the area.

Other Things to Note:

Dog-friendly for a nightly fee

Firewood provided

Good to know: the caretaker lives in the guest quarters on the property

Sea Ranch has three recreation centers with heated pools, saunas, and tennis courts. Access passes are provided with your stay -- check availability upon arrival as these shared amenities can be popular during peak times.

Exterior lighting is minimal by design to preserve the stunning dark sky -- bring a flashlight for evening walks and enjoy some of the best stargazing on the California coast.

Keep your eyes on the horizon from December to April -- gray whales migrate just offshore, and this property has a front-row seat. Visit in spring and the meadows explode with wildflowers. April through June is peak bloom season along the Sonoma Coast. The warmest months are June through September. Expect coastal fog most mornings that gives way to sunny afternoons.

Cell service can be spotty along the coast. The home has WiFi for staying connected.

While the house has many positive features (great couch, comfy king bed, lovely view), the dead insects on the queen bed sheets (at the head) were not only gross but according to reviews have apparently been a long time problem (termites in the ceiling?); same with the broken microwave. And the house smelled musty upon arrival.

Mary, finding dead insects on the bed sheets is genuinely unacceptable, and we are sorry that overshadowed what sounds like it could have been a lovely stay at Eurella Estate. The home has been treated for the pest issue, and while we had not received a recent report of it recurring, we are taking your experience seriously and following up with the property accordingly. The microwave concern is also on our radar now, and we will inspect and address it. The musty smell on arrival is something we want to understand better as well, so our team is looking into what may have contributed to that. We know you came to rest and enjoy that view, not to deal with any of this. Thank you for being honest with us. It genuinely helps us take better care of the home.Reply to vrbo review...

Location was very nice. Beautiful view. We found some of the art work dark and creepy such as a hammer made of bone on the night stand. Otherwise very helpful host and pleasant stay.

Michelle, thank you for the kind words about Eurella Estate's location, the view, and your experience with our team — we're really glad your stay was a pleasant one. On the artwork: the home's owner curates the decor personally, and we know taste in that area varies widely. We appreciate you flagging that a particular piece landed differently than intended, and we'll pass that note along to the owner. We'd love to host you again at Eurella Estate or one of our other Sea Ranch homes — feel free to message us if you'd like a recommendation. — Casago Sonoma

Pros: We loved this beautiful and unique home. The design is stunning and we thought the collection of artwork was truly amazing. We enjoyed being able to walk to Black Point Beach, the bluff trail, the Moonraker pool and the Lodge. In all my years visiting Sea Ranch, I don't think I've ever been able to walk to a pool - such a treat. There are so many windows bringing light in, a number of good nooks to curls up in, and we thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub sanctuary. Communication was friendly and prompt. The view from the deck was spectacular and we had a great time playing horseshoes in the pit. Cons: The house needs some work, specifically the roof, We were really disappointed by the mattresses, particularly in the primary bedroom. It was hard to feel rested on a long-awaited vacation when sleeping on such a bad mattress for almost a week. We also wished the queen bedroom and the twin bedroom were swapped - families traveling with kids should note that the twin bedroom is quite a ways away from the other rooms. The most disappointing discovery for our group was that the house does not have a bbq (we had just assumed given the enclosed deck and how common they are). We had beautiful weather and incredible sunsets but someone always had to miss out to tend to dinner in the kitchen which does not have views. Maybe that seems a silly thing to complain about but renters should be aware. We'd probably go out of our way to rent the house again if there was a bbq added.

Alison, thank you for sharing so much detail about your stay at Eurella Estate. The artwork, the hot tub sanctuary, the horseshoes pit, walking to Moonraker, that deck view, it's clear the home delivered in so many meaningful ways. We hear you on the BBQ. The owner had already ordered a new one before your review came in, and we're sorry it wasn't in place for your visit during such beautiful weather. On the mattresses and the roof, we've flagged both with the owner and are following up to make sure those get the attention they deserve. We're grateful you took the time to tell us what wasn't working. It genuinely helps us take care of this home the way it deserves.

Beautiful home, lovely location, sweet hot tub on the patio, great sunset watching! You can access the bluff trails and Black Point beach on foot, as well as Sea Ranch Lodge. Great sunset watching from the deck. Very private-feeling property because there aren’t neighbors super close by. We had a great stay!

Beautiful home. Could use a little TLC (some spaces a little musty) but it was overall functional and comfortable. The outdoor spaces and views were unbeatable. Close to Black Point Beach, Moonraker pool and the lodge. Well-appointed kitchen to cook in. We did run into a mouse issue in the laundry room - mostly a problem because it drove our dog crazy.

Great place to stay

We really enjoyed our stay. The house was comfortable, clean, and had almost everything we needed (couldn't find a drying rack for clothes or dishes, but it was great even having the ability to wash clothes). The views of the ocean were fantastic. It was very quiet and felt secluded even with another place next door. We'll definitely stay here again!
