Whether you're planning a family getaway, a couples retreat, a horseback riding weekend, or an outdoor adventure with friends, our comfortable property offers the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring Iowa's oldest and most scenic state park.

Spend your days hiking the park's beautiful limestone bluffs, fishing in the Maquoketa River, horseback riding nearby trails, golfing at local courses, kayaking, wildlife watching, or simply enjoying the peaceful countryside. After your adventures, return to the Bunkhouse to relax, reconnect, and make lasting memories.

Traveling with horses? We've got you covered! Guests are welcome to bring their horses and take advantage of our on-site corrals, making it easy to enjoy nearby riding opportunities. We also offer plenty of space for horse trailer parking, so loading, unloading, and settling in is convenient and stress-free.

We're excited to welcome you to our newly established property! As Backbone Bunkhouse & Hitching Post continues to grow, we'll be making ongoing improvements and adding new amenities for our guests to enjoy. Currently we multiple patios for outdoor entertainment, a sitting patio in front, back patio for grilling and outdoor meals, additional patio with attached fire pit area in the back with great views. We have outsides games including shuffleboard court and horseshoes. All of these recreational activities designed to make your stay even more memorable. We appreciate you being part of our journey and look forward to sharing future updates with our guests.

The listing was everything we wanted. Including space outside for people to hangout. The host was wonderful and easy to communicate with. They even went above and beyond and decorated for us. We will definitely be back!

The location was perfect for our gathering situated right outside the entrance to Backbone State Park with a golf course right next door to the park. Shari reached out to understand what our plans were to make sure that we had everything we needed including a grill, ice and firewood. Shari was very responsive and answered all of my questions. She also provided a list of area restaurants and attractions and information about the park. Shari is making improvements to the property including a recently added patio which is where we spent a lot of time. The place is so relaxing and had enough beds for our group of 14. Shari was wonderful to work with. I highly recommend this property for your next getaway.
