Great getaway!

Second time here to this quiet little cabin tucked away amongst many farms. The cabin is located in a beautiful small private lake perfect for a serene escape from the big city life. If you want relaxation this place is perfect and the host are very generous.

Peaceful place in the country

Looking for peace...this place is it. Beautiful countryside to drive through, great place to watch the sunset over the lake, quaint & quiet. Close to Shipshewana. The property is very well maintained. Our only regret...we didn't have more time to stay and just enjoy the property.

Cozy cabin with great views

Loved the location, a very cozy cabin perfect for a weekend away with a fantastic view of the lake. Wish there was a full curtain in the bathroom though cuz it felt very exposed when leaving the shower

Grandie trip

I travel every summer from NC to take my 3 Indiana grandkids, one at a time for a 1-2 night get away with just me/grandma. This was our first visit to The Bunkhouse’ - every one of us enjoyed our stay. Low-key, country setting with things to do/enjoy right there at the rental, as well as things close by to enjoy. Kathy was an excellent host. We hope to return next year.

Restful

Absolutely the very best! We needed a quiet restful area and this answered all of needs. The bunkhouse had everything we needed and the plus didn’t have any dishes to do. Also there were horses to pet and love on. I would so recommend this to everyone.

Beautiful farm on the water!

I booked a 4 night getaway at this cabin for my husband’s birthday and he’s already making plans for our return. The cabin is really cute and the bed and sofas are definitely well suited for naps!! My husband caught plenty of crappie, bass, blue gill, sunfish and a couple of catfish right from the pier on the private lake. My favorite part was loving on Fame. This horse enjoyed her pets and her neck a torches

Peaceful and relaxing

Our stay was peaceful and relaxing surrounded by beautiful countryside. The bed was very comfortable, well needed rest after our bike rides on the weekend. The pool looked very inviting but we came unprepared. We look forward to a dip in it the next time we stay. The small conveniences for a kitchen were just fine for our needs of a busy weekend as we were out for most of our meals. Had what we needed for that which we ate in. Would definitely recommend a stay here!

Getaway

We had such a nice time at the cabin. That place was so cute! I appreciated being able to use the John Deer Gator to explore the other side of the lake. Plus it gave the teens something fun to do by themselves. Thank you! I loved cooking on the fire. Swimming in the pool and fishing off the dock. We would like to visit again sometime.

As pretty as it looks.

The cabin and property are just as pictured. Kathy was a great hostess and made our stay enjoyable even with the rotten weather. We did get to have a fire and cook our hotdogs and marshmallows, and our ride on the Gator was awesome! The cabin could use a little extra TLC. We did miss the DVD player, but we adjusted. We will come again, hopefully when we're can really explore all of the woods. It was a great get away for us.

If rest and sleep is your priority this cabin’s for you.

If you just want to rest, relax and sleep this is the spot for you. The property was beautiful and cozy and filled with the wonders of nature. However, if you are one who desires privacy, be advised that the cabin is right next to the owner’s house. Though they never intruded on us the knowledge that they were right next door hindered us from thoroughly enjoying our stay. The lake is beautiful and relaxing. Utilize the pontoon and row boat if you just want to enjoy the scenery and float on the water. But if you want to fish, save your money on renting the boats as the lake is certainly over fished. Overall, a pleasant stay but not memorable.

Great Familiy Getaway

We took our grandson to Mirror Lake to celebrate his 7th birthday. The beautiful surroundings and fun activities made for a great trip. The Cottage was clean and cozy. Kathy made sure we had everything we needed. We enjoyed all the amenities offered. We had lots of fun in the pool, fishing from the dock and the pontoon boat, making smores on the fire pit, and exploring the property on the Gator. The breakfasts Kathy prepared and delivered to us each morning were delicious, and she put in some added touches that our grandson enjoyed. Before the trip, we had several questions for Kathy; she replied promptly with the information we needed. Thank you, Kathy, for helping make our getaway so memorable for our grandson and us.

A Beautiful, Peaceful Get-A-Way <3

My husband and I love nature, and peaceful Get-a-ways. Kathy and Jed have a darling cabin on Mirror Lake, with nature abounding! We watched an osprey dive down into the lake and grab a fish to take to it's nest! The cabin is full of charm, and the area surrounding is even better. The large farm is great for hiking, boating, kayaking and even has a pontoon boat. After kayaking the lake, we were able to use their gator to haul 2 kayaks to the back of their farm, which borders Elkhart river. This is way, WAY back in the country!! Many various birds, fish and deer all around. If you want remote; this is remote! We kayaked to Jones lake and watched the bass jump out of the water (May 16th). I'm soo thankful we found this place, and so thankful to Kathy and Jed for sharing it with us! We will be back!!

About the host

Host profile image
We have lived on the farm for over 30 years. We have 3 grown children & 4 grand daughters and three grandsons. That all still live near the area. I come from a large family of 10 siblings and over 40 nieces and nephews. And now over 30 great nieces & nephews (and that is just my side). I host most of the family gatherings. When my kids left the house I missed people coming and going. This has been a dream and a thought of mine for over 15 years. So with the help of my husband in 2006 we remodeled a 2 car garage. And converted it into our Bed and Breakfast we call the 'Bunkhouse'. Giving you all the amenities but keeping it rustic, cabin-like & simple. When we are not working around the property. We enjoy riding our horses, our pool, golfing, fishing, our cabins for campfires and camping. We also enjoy using the river on our property for canoeing and Kayaking. I used to think no would ever come all the way out here to stay. Then I would ride my horse in the trails in the woods and come back to the house. Looking over all the property then I would think. It's to pretty not to share. A life style almost forgotten. Time for us all to sit back & relax & enjoy life for awhile.

Why they chose this property

When life hands you lemons you make Lemon-aid. My first husband died when we were 28. We were living outside Kendallville. In a new home in the woods. Jed & his wife had bought 6 acres, the home and portion of the lake in 1988. Just a few months later, she too passed away too at the age of 28. 6 years later in 1994 we married and I & my 7 year old son moved to Mirror Lake. Where we joined Jed (my husband) and his daughter of 10 and son of 7. We fell in love with the property. I too grow up on a family farm in the country and loved it. My husband was a dairy farmer. He milked cows on the home place just a few miles from this home. We have now purchased the entire farm of 175 acres, the family cemetery, the south half of the private lake and the 15 acre woods across the lake. For 17 years of our marriage he milked cows and was gone alot and worked very long hours. 4 years ago he sold the cows and now is only a grain farmer. And we have a lot more time to enjoy our property. What isn't there to LOVE?? Fresh air, green grass, green growing crops, blue sky, beautiful water, the Little Elkhart River, horse trails to ride or walk on. Peace, privacy, nature in all directions and FISH too. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE??

What makes this property unique

The main house dates to the early 1830's. There is a family cemetery with 49 graves on the farm, just south of the horse barn. We have an Osprey (bird) nest in our power line tower. There are only 5 nests in Noble Co. and 3 in LaGrange Co. AND WE HAVE ONE. This is their 5th year returning. It is peaceful and private. You are the only guests on the main property (there maybe campers in the woods at the 2 campsites.) A place to reconnect to each other or be on a vacation with another couple and NOT be surrounded by other people. Again did I say PRIVATE AND PEACEFUL!!
