We always enjoy our visit to Barbeau and the Freighter Cabin. We saw at least 30 ships pass by - so close it feels like you could almost reach out and touch them. Waves from the crew and nighttime ship lights are my favorite scenes. The night sky is gorgeous with more stars than we could possibly imagine. Peaceful river scene with fall beauty all around! The log cabin is perfect and cozy. TV and cable worked great - watched the Lions win one night! Cozy Corner Restaurant is always our favorite place to eat when we're not eating in the cabin. See you next year!
We needed a base camp for our boating adventure. This property and location was the perfect spot.
The view and closeness to the freighters was exceptional.
Pretty much right in the shipping lane, south bound out of Superior. If you love being close to the Great Lakes ships, then this place is awesome. Not much around but the food and staff at the watering hole (Cozy Corners) is a short walk from the cabin.
It was so much fun to see what type of boat would should up next. The location is nice and just a great place to relax.
The Falls and the Locks are also something nice to see and do while staying here.
Communications with the property owner were great. The communications via VRBO were very difficult to follow. Otherwise, the experience was really nice.
We always enjoy our yearly stay at the Freighter Cabin! This year we saw about 23 big freighters passing by so close! The comfy atmosphere in the cabin is relaxing and we always hate to leave! Took a few drives to see fall colors, went to Mackinac Island one day, visited a few UP breweries! Pure Michigan we love it!
Absolutely love watching the freighters, tugboats and even a great lakes cruise ship on this visit.
Had an issue with the tv.... but not a deal breaker for us. I think it was a remote issue. Property owner tried very hard to fix the problem.
No doubt in my mind that we'll be back in the future.
The cabin is absolutely beautiful, and the view is pretty unreal. I’m from the Upper Peninsula, and have seen freighters my whole life — but never like this. It is stunning and pictures can not do it justice. The view is visible from every room, which you will appreciate at sunrise. It’s a beautifully built cabin, and so comfortable you will feel like you’re at home. This is the kind of rental worth booking again and again. We will absolutely be back!
We truly enjoyed our stay at your property and made a memory that will last a lifetime with our 14-year-old son, a huge freighter fan and follower. Getting up during the middle of the night and climbing down from the loft in our pajamas to sit on the porch swing and watch The Queen of the Lakes - Paul R. Tregurtha majestically glide by under the cover of darkness was priceless. Thank you for sharing this wonderful home and spot with all of us.
It was amazing! If you are looking to get away and unwind this is the place to go. You are able to watch the freighters go by and speak to the workers who are on the deck. You can just sit out on the porch and listen to the river. Highly recommend this little piece of paradise.
The home is very comfortable with a stunning view. The freighters slip magically by, but when they’re not around the view is still breathtaking. We played games in the yard, enjoyed the good stereo system & explored the area. You’ll love it. Trust us. This was our third visit.
A wonderfully unique, peaceful and beautiful property. If you weren't a "boat nerd" before, you'll be hooked after staying here! Looking forward to a return visit. Thank you Kelly and Jim for sharing this home.
Unforgettable Experience! Freighter Fans and Photographers will Love This Place!
The VRBO description can't begin to describe this incredible experience! The cottage is almost literally on the St. Mary's River, across from Neebish Island. We are accustomed to bringing many kitchen items to make for a convenient and comfortable vacation in rental cottages. We didn't need a thing for this place, except for eye masks, as the lights from the navigation buoys, channel markers, and freighters beamed in the windows at night. The only window coverings are in the bathrooms. If you're exceedingly modest- no worries, as there are no neighbors to see you in your PJs. We cooked almost all our meals and were pleased with the range, microwave, and dishwasher. The laundry is a nice feature also.
We hoped to find a cozy place where we might view a freighter or two In our 7-day stay. We saw more than 30 freighters pass by, just 30 yds. from the deck! They emit only a quiet hum, and you get a great light show at night from these mammoth boats with their beautiful lights reflected on the St. Mary's River. How close? We could hear conversations of the boats' crewmembers as they went by. The Neebish Island Ferry landing is next door, so you also get to observe that operation. Our photos and videos are keepers taken from this unique vantage point.
We were there in the autumn, so the fall color was a bonus. Birders will enjoy this spot, also. We enjoyed watching the gulls, Common Mergansers, and bald eagles. The location is just 30 minutes from the Soo Locks. Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point were great day trips. But, honestly, it's so great to see the wildlife and boats on the river, we didn't need to go anywhere.
Loved everything about this property. Amazing views from inside and from the beautiful deck. Fun, relaxing and perfect spot for watching freighters!
