About this property
A Modern House in a Large Nature Reserve in Ligonier Valley!
The still shots just don't do the place the justice it deserves! Sugar Tree Lodge is the perfect spot for your upcoming family reunion, friendly get together, family retreat, or even wedding!
Located in the resort mountains of western Pennsylvania, only 54 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, Sugar Tree Lodge is the perfect place to be whenever you want to enter the natural world of forest and stream, but at the same time want to reside in a beautiful and comfortable home close to resort attractions such as Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Laurel Mountain Ski Resort, and Idlewild Park.
Surrounding Sugar Tree Lodge's property, the Randall Reserve is dedicated to the preservation of woodlands and wildlife in the valley between Ligonier and Donegal, to the end that current and future generations may continue to experience the natural legacy of this lovely part of the Laurel Highlands. Any wildlife that can survive in this part of the country appears from time to time, leaving tracks and signs of their presence. Many varieties of wildflowers, shrubs and trees are to be found here. A network of trails on the Randall Reserve surrounding the property connects all of this together, taking you back to Sugar Tree Lodge where you can relax in comfort.
On site there is a pond to enjoy fishing and small boating, more than a mile of Four Mile Run (the major creek and trout stream in this area) to explore and enjoy, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, a game court for family enjoyment, volleyball and badminton, picnics and bonfires. Just around the corner is beautiful Donegal Lake, a Pennsylvania public area which offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing and small boating (on a bring-your-own basis).
You may want to visit some of the famous places in the Laurel Highlands around us:
Idlewilde Park (voted the #1 amusement park for children in the United States) which has Soak Zone and Story Book Forest and many other rides and amusements.
We are less than a 30-minute drive to all three of the local ski resorts. Laurel Mountain, Hidden Valley, and Seven Springs each offer their own challenges on the slopes and other amenities like golf, snow tubing, sporting clay shooting, and much more.
Nearby Ohiopyle State Park has miles of trails and whitewater rafting opportunities. Let us not forget the amazing fishing and fly fishing in the area creeks and streams.
Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Fallingwater' and 'Kentuck Knob' are world renowned for their architectural accomplishments. Both sites have daily tours available.
If you are a history buff, Flight 93 Memorial will touch your heart and the town of Ligonier has Fort Ligonier with its amazing historical reproductions of life in Revolutionary War times.
A short drive will take you to the Laurel Caverns where you can tour the beautiful subterranean caves and streams.
The list goes on seemingly forever...
If all the action isn't your speed bring along a book or two and your favorite drink and just enjoy the peace and comfort of the lodge itself. It is hard to imagine a more restful and satisfying vacation.
THE HOUSE:
Sugar Tree's first floor features an open floor plan that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. There's a wood-burning fireplace as well as floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto a large deck overlooking the pond, allowing you to combine indoor and outdoor living and dining at the same time. (Great for get-togethers!). In addition, our back entrance room contains washer and dryer for your use and a half-bath.
The master bedroom suite has its own wing, a king bed, 1 and 1/2 baths, a private tea-for-two deck, and an adjacent smaller room with a single bed.
The 2nd floor has a den with TV and a queen bed, a bunk room with 6 beds, and two additional rooms ( King and Queen), a card table nook, and two full bathrooms.
The attached annex over the garage is a multi-purpose room with a queen bed and a single bed, a full bath and a narrow deck that overlooks the pond. This annex will be available for use during all times of year and includes its own heating and air conditioning.
Our yard has a large and a small bonfire pit, a picnic area, a set-up for soccer and badminton, a games court containing shuffleboard, horseshoes, and basketball hoops. There's a dock and rowboat for the pond.
The Four Mile Run (a creek), the preeminent trout fishing stream in southern Ligonier Valley, delineates the lower yard and supplies shallow water fun for small children plus exploration and fishing for older children and adults.

Although we expect to keep improving Sugar Tree every year, we believe that, right now, you can have a great time in our forest wonderland.

Why they chose this property
Around 1960 a lady named Belle and her husband set foot on a property that had a sparkling pond, a cottage, a hundred acres or so of Pennsylvania hardwood forest, and flowering weeds almost 5 to 6 feet high.
They looked at each other and bought the place on the spot. That property is now Sugar Tree Lodge, a love at first sight that never ends. They built the house to last, using steel framework and a steel roof. (Look at that roof today, recently painted and good as new!). Over the years nearby lands were added, much of which eventually became the Randall Reserve.
