A DESCRIPTION OF THE SANTA CRUZ DISTRICT
The song says that Seville has something special, and if you know the Andalusian capital, you will agree with me that that something special is in the Barrio de Santa Cruz.
Your walk in the Barrio de Santa Cruz will undoubtedly be one of the most rewarding moments of your visit to Seville. A walk in the day, but also at night enjoying the tapas in the busiest streets of bars.
Just as the sister city of Cordoba has its Jewish Quarter that stretches from the Mezquita, where all the tourist activity is concentrated, something similar happens in Seville to the Barrio de Santa Cruz.
In fact the Barrio de Santa Cruz is actually the old Jewish quarter of Seville, where in the time of Fernando III of Castile was concentrated the second most important Jewish community of Spain after the one of Toledo.
Now when you walk through the Barrio de Santa Cruz you will find a network of small and secluded squares, narrow alleys and passages, in fact, a place to get lost.
What to see in Barrio Santa Cruz
Your walk, which you can start from the Plaza del Triunfo, where the cathedral is located, entering the square known as Patio de Banderas, next to the Reales Alcázares, should be a search of corners.
The Plaza of the Three Crosses in the Barrio de Santa Cruz de Sevilla
The Passage in the Barrio de Santa Cruz in Seville
One of the first can be the square of Santa Marta, hidden behind a passage that you access from the Plaza del Triunfo. But I want to highlight the Plaza de la Santa Cruz, where there is a church with the same name, and where the remains of the painter Murillo.
In the square of the Refinadores you can see a sculpture dedicated to the literary figure of Don Juan Tenorio, which had a special link with the Barrio de Santa Cruz.
During your walk through this popular neighborhood you will visit the house of the poet Luis Celaya. And you will pass by the so-called Water Alley, which extends along the wall of the Reales Alcázares, and where you will undoubtedly be struck by the beautiful courtyard of the Washington Irving house.
Even in one of the lost corners of the neighborhood (you can not tell where it is) you will see three columns of granite that belonged to a Roman temple of the first century.
When it comes to tapas, a must see is Mateos Gago street, very easy to find, because it starts behind the back of the cathedral. At the corner of Calle Rodrigo Gago, I dare to recommend the ever-popular Bodega de Santa Cruz Las Columnas, with a great variety of excellent tapas and at a good price, but with limited space.
