About this property
Peaceful Solar-Powered Country Home 6 miles from Mayo
Irish Ridge Farm is a B&E (that’s Bed and Eggs!). Our farm house is located five miles east of Rochester, MN making it a convenient, homey spot for any Rochester visitors, especially Mayo patients, who will find a relaxing and rejuvenating environment. We are quiet and rural, yet 15 minutes from downtown Rochester with all the city amenities. Our home, now solar-powered, is cozy but not fancy and we hope you’ll find it imbued with a warm energy that comes from all of the happy memories that our family made over the last 60+ years.
We have three bedrooms (one queen and two doubles) that comfortably sleep six people. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, dinnerware, silverware, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, and dishwasher. You can also have a cook-out with the outdoor gas grill. In season, we stock the fridge with a carton (or two) of fresh eggs from our happy, free-run chickens. As with many houses of its era, there is a single modest bathroom, with an extra shower and vanity in the adjoining laundry room. A shed protects your car from those frosty Minnesota winter mornings. Irish Ridge Farm provides central A/C, WiFi, flat screen TV with cable, free laundry, games, and books to peruse. There is a baby grand piano for you to create beautiful music whether you are a accomplished pianist or just like to tinker.
Children are welcome. Kids find it great fun to explore 160 acres of meadows, trails, and woods as well as the red barn that has hosted many barn dances over the years.
We have chickens, a goose, sheep, goats, a couple of barn cats and a friendly Lab. Favorite farm activities include walking mowed trails, hiking to the woods or up the country road to a small lake. Cranes, eagles, hawks, swans and pelicans are commonly spotted. Bird watchers will be delighted. Some outdoor activities in the area include biking, hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing and x-country skiing. Rochester has a Saturday Farmers Market, many cultural activities, and plenty of great restaurants.
Irish Ridge Farm presents a myriad of opportunities to relax. Each season has its own character: from spring-time morel-hunting to summer-time gardening and watching the glow of the fireflies; from savoring the fall colors to star gazing and snow shoeing in the crisp winter air.
Our ancestors, Irish immigrants, settled the area in 1858. In 1949 our parents bought the farm where they lived and raised a family for over sixty years. Martha moved back to the farm over 25 years ago and she and her husband raised their children in the house across the driveway. Margie lives in Madison, WI with her family and returns often to spend time on the farm. Guests from around the world have found that the Bowman family on Irish Ridge welcomed them with open arms. We want to continue the tradition by hosting you and your family at Irish Ridge Farm. There are no strangers here, only friends we haven’t met.

This is the second year we have stayed at Irish Ridge Farm. We had another absolutely wonderful weekend with family and friends relaxing at the farm. Our kids loved helping Mark with the farm chores, and we all enjoyed feeding the animals and cooking delicious meals with fresh veggies from the garden (and eggs from the chickens). Martha and Mark are delightful, generous hosts. This place feels like a home away from home, and we can't wait to come back!
It was as wonderful this year as last! Martha and Mark make the stay extra special with fresh eggs, muffins and butter to welcome us. We love this place!
The farmhouse was a wonderful stay for me and my seven year old. We had a fabulous time watching the animals and walking around the property. The location to Rochester was very convenient and we were able to see a lot of the local sites easily. The house was very clean and while it retained its historical character, wasn’t lacking in any way. We would totally stay again!
We loved our weekend stay on the farm, going for walks, helping feed the animals, and taking in nature. The house is perfect for a family and a great location close to Rochester for those who love the countryside but also want to have access to the city while they are on vacation. Hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming. We hope to be back soon!!
Wonderful short stay. Super friendly hosts, including the barn cat Wally! Cozy, comfortable home with vintage charm. Very relaxing atmosphere in a beautiful rural setting just outside of Rochester. The sheep, goats, chickens and barn cats were great company! What a treat to know the nearby crops and garden are grown organically. My family and I loved it. It was like staying at a friend’s home
Our daughter got married at a nearby venue. This house was a perfect place to stay for pre-wedding details & post wedding gift opening!! A beautiful farm house with everything we needed!!
Our host was very friendly & welcoming with fresh eggs & delicious muffins waiting for our arrival!!
Peaceful space, great for kids, lovely property and hosts
Just a quick weekend getaway for our family (2 adults, 1 preschooler) but highly recommend! The house was clean, well maintained, and thoughtfully outfitted as far as supplies, kitchen equipment, and so forth. The location is very peaceful and quiet, but still super convenient to Rochester, 10-15 minute drive depending on where you need to be in the city. And the owners are absolutely delightful people, friendly and very generous with their produce and their time (our preschooler had such a blast "helping" with farm chores). A++
We had a wonderful stay at Irish Ridge Farm. We wanted a quick and easy trip to escape city life for a bit and this was the perfect place. The farm was beautiful and the hosts were welcoming. On arrival we were given a tour of the farm and there were delicious muffins, eggs and butter waiting in the farmhouse for us. Martha and Mark are very kind and generous with their eggs and farm bounty. My 8 year old daughter loved farm life - helping feed the animals, picking apples, gathering eggs and digging up potatoes and onions. My 11 year old enjoyed the peacefulness of the property- reading and swinging on the big tree. We also brought my dad and he enjoyed the farm as well. It was a hit for all ages! The farmhouse is very comfortable. It’s old fashioned and well kept. Reminded me of my grandma’s house. There is a magnificent tree outside the kitchen window that was in full autumn glory. This is a special place- very peaceful and relaxing. Thank you Martha and Mark for sharing your farm with us. We hope to see you again!
This home is a lovely, peacful place to come and relax and slow down in life. We were greeted with two smiling faces who showed us around the farm and told us to treat it like home :). Inside the kitchen we found homeade muffins, fresh eggs and butter! Out kids loved running and playing with the animals (especially the kitties) and loved fetching eggs to cook for breakfast. Our family enjoyed this home and will definitely be back!
This was our second visit, as our children could not wait to return after our first visit several years back. We were so happy to be greeted with the same warm hospitality, kindness, beauty, and cleanliness as the last time. This is such a special place, and will always be full of happy memories for our family. Margie and Dan made us a fire one of the evenings we stayed, and we sat around the fire and talked with them. It was just one of the wonderful memories we made that weekend. Do not pass up the opportunity to stay at this beautiful farm!
This was our 3rd stay at the Irish B&E. Like many traveling to the Mayo Clinic we are grateful to find a relaxing place to unwind after a long day of appointments and procedures. This property absolutely fulfills that need. The home was exceptionally clean and well appointed with everything needed. The hosts are amazing and warm people who always make us feel right at home from their warm greeting to the organic butter, muffins and farm raised eggs they have waiting upon arrival. The farm is beautiful and we especially enjoyed the evenings visiting on the screened in porch. The Mayo Clinic was an easy 12 minute drive away. I would highly recommend this property. We enjoyed our time there so much we can’t wait until we get to stay again!
Nestled just outside of town, on a picturesque farm, this VRBO exceeded all expectations with its thoughtful attention to detail. The kitchen was impressively stocked with everything we needed to prepare family meals, it even had a giant Sweet Corn pot! After busy days, our family slept well in 3, very comfortable beds. The living room offered plush couches and comfortable rocking chairs, perfect for evening relaxation, creating a true home away from home atmosphere. The outdoor space transformed our vacation into an unforgettable adventure. The kids (and Mom) spent hours on a sturdy tree swing hanging from a magnificent oak. The friendly farm animals became instant companions as the kids delighted in feeding and interacting with them daily. Perhaps most special was the vegetable garden where we harvested fresh produce for our dinners—an experience that connected us to the land in a meaningful way. We enjoyed dinner outside on two huge picnic tables listening to the animals and enjoying nature. What an amazing experience! Our gracious hosts enhanced everything with their warm hospitality, and ensuring our stay was perfect while respecting our privacy. This property delivered not just accommodation, but a genuine countryside experience our family will treasure forever!
To put our experience into a few words is very difficult because it was more than we ever could have imagined. Marsha and husband Mark are delightful. They truly want to provide you with whatever you seek. If you want to stay quietly in their sweet VRBO, it’s peaceful, beautiful, quiet, inspiring. If you want to collect eggs just because, or walk the pastures, chase the cats, listen to sheep and goats-you can. We were lucky enough to join M & M and family for pizza.
The history of the ridge is incredible. The story of the family, intriguing. Read the Irish Ridge binder and the journal that guests write in re: their stays and their experiences. So many things you just need to experience yourself to be left without words great enough to explain the experience.
A gift in so many different ways. We’ll be back!!!
We were looking for a special place to have an early holiday get-together for our adult children/spouses, grandkids and us. It had been four years since we had all been together! When we found Irish Ridge online, we knew it would be just the right spot. I grew up on a farm and everything brought back great memories of my grandparents’ house across the road.
When we arrived, there were fresh eggs and applesauce muffins waiting.
Our grandkids had a great time feeding the VERY friendly goats, petting the cats and playing foosball, hockey and music in the barn. Martha and Mark checked in with us to be sure we had everything we needed and even let us have some Brussels sprouts from their garden. We would highly recommend Irish Ridge to everyone and we can’t wait to return!
We loved staying outside the hustle and bustle of Rochester, yet only a 15 minute drive away. It was quiet, restful, and very comfortable, with beautiful views from every window and plenty of room. Meals were easy to prepare in the spacious modern kitchen. Good lighting, everything works, and it was great to have washer, dryer, and a top-notch shower. Martha and Mark were exceptionally welcoming and gracious. We will be back!
Incredible hosts and beautiful country farm environment. Beautifully decorated warm farm house. Relaxing and so quiet and tranquil. The eggs are fresh and the sheep and cats are so friendly. Our 4th time staying here and look forward to returning again in the future.
We stayed for a bachelorette party getaway and it was SO relaxing. We enjoyed the quiet mornings saying good morning to all the animals, grabbing fresh eggs and veggies on the property, and enjoying a cup of coffee on the screened in porch or the tree swing. The property is fully stocked with pretty much everything we needed, so some of the stuff we brought we didn’t even need to bring! The hosts were SO NICE. We could lot have asked for a better getaway for us and the bride. Thank you so much guys!!!
Clean, peaceful farm house complete with gardens and farm animals. There were marvelous fresh eggs, potatoes, and onions for breakfast... or dinner. It was nice to walk the yard and watch the world settle for the evening or wake up in the morning.
This was our second time to stay at the Irish Ridge Farm B&E. We absolutely love this property! It is so beautiful. The house is very clean and well maintained. The hosts have gone to great lengths to provide everything they can to make a stay honey and comfortable. It is within a 10 minute drive to the Mayo and other shopping but far enough away to enjoy the peace and solitude of the country. We will definitely plan to return on future visits. Highly recommend!
Martha and her husband helped us make some amazing memories.

We hope to return this winter for XC skiing at Chester Woods.
We were visiting Mayo for a series of appointments and procedures for my daughter. We and our 2 toddlers loved staying at the Irish Ridge Farm with Martha and her family as hosts! The house has been meticulously maintained over the years and was very clean. It had everything we needed to be comfortable and everyone slept great! The property is gorgeous and they allowed us to interact with the animals (and we even got to bottle feed some lambs!), gather fresh eggs, and enjoy fresh greens from their garden. The barn has a large open play area as another space for the kids to play (would be excellent for older kids to go off on their own). Generally, I can’t say enough about the hospitality and kindness of Martha and Mark. We didn’t want to leave and it felt like staying with our own family. ❤️
