Captain's Quarters Cottage on Kamuela's Nob Hill
Enjoy the cool setting of Kamuela. Located in the famed hub of Parker Ranch the beloved central point of verdant cattle country rich in Island history. Located on one of the hillsides above Kamuela town, this Cozy Chateau style cottage sits near the top of the hill featuring unique architectural design with a cozy deck which facilitates indoor/outdoor living. Stargazing is Prime on a clear night. Ocean views are enjoyed from the lanai. The Big Island's best beaches and resorts are only about a 15 minute drive from the property. Please be advised that some of the older reviews on this site were based on the main house of the property which was operated as a VRBO vacation rental from 2015 - 2020. The current Captain's Quarters rental is the studio/cottage on the property as shown in photos. We invite you to stay at our lovely cottage which we trust you will thoroughly enjoy. Please provide some brief information about yourself and your stay when making the reservation request. I like to have a bit of information about our guests before accepting reservation requests. It was very clean, very nicely laid out, and well supplied. Love the paintings and decor,l and he had a great selection of books. Jay was very welcoming and responsive to our requests
A very unique place in the hills of Kamuela. Property sits high and has wonderful views through the large wall of windows and from the lanai. I felt very at home here and enjoyed a full functioning kitchen. Driveway is narrow, steep and kind of long so best to heed the advise of the property owner regarding car selection if you are renting one for your visit. I would definitely return!
The cottage was very neat and clean from the kitchen through the bathroom. The decor made me feel right at home. The views of the Mauna we're outstanding. Staying even for two nights was well worth the trip. I highly recommend you staying here at this cottage
The studio guest cottage was very cozy and well appointed. Waimea has a perfect climate with no need for heating or a/c. I would definitely stay here again.
Host was great and available at all times ! Home was in a great view location and very clean, comfortable and well equipped. The king bed was extremely comfortable! The only negative was the driveway. The driveway (as noted on the property description) is quite steep and difficult to enter or exit w/o scraping the bumper guards on our rental vehicle (even with a 4WD SUV and being coached by the Host). The maneuvering room at the parking area at the top of the driveway is also quite restrictive. All in all, a great Host and location, but challenging entry/exit and parking!
Waimea was the perfect 'jumping off spot" for our big island visit, and the Captain's Quarters Cottage was the perfect spot in Waimea. Clean, spacious, well-equipped, and with beautiful views and cooling breezes this is where we'd come back in a heartbeat.
This was a beautiful little cottage. Nice deck. Conveniently located for my birding outings. The property owner was friendly, helpful, and conscientious. I would gladly stay here again.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Captain's Quarters! The cottage was very beautifully set-up & so clean. We had lots of privacy. The outside deck area was nicely covered so we could sit outside even if there was a little rain. Situated close to our favorite beach, morning swims were no problem. We can't say enough about how much we loved our stay...our new island home away from home, can't wait to go back!
We love staying here at Captain Jay's.. it's our second time! Waimea is beautiful and at a cooler elevation, which we enjoy. The space is well-equipped for cooking meals. There's a killer morning view of Mauna Kea out the front door. We like the proximity to town and centralized location. The farmers markets can't be beat! There's a few quirks with the shower's hot water & the steep driveway (AWD with clearance no prob though). The furniture could use an update soon, but still works ok. The pillows and linens are super comfy! This is a great place to relax and enjoy island life.
Jay's cottage is cozy and perfect for a couple for a quiet getaway. It is equipped with everything you could think of (and even things you didn't think of!). We would definitely stay there again if we are ever in Waimea in the future. Highly recommend!!!

Captain Jay Chavez is a retired ship's Captain, pictured here with wife Diane off the Island of Kauai on the NCL Cruise Ship Pride of Aloha, he commanded prior to retirement. Jay and Diane are long time residents of the Big Island and have raised two Sons in Waimea. The Big Island is a great place to enjoy the outdoors.
Why they chose this property
The peaceful location in the center of town offers so many advantages. The location is perfect for long walks, convenience to shops and restaurants and has a relaxing vibe.
What makes this property unique
Waimea has a lot of micro climates and the dry side of Waimea is often desired. It frequently rains daily which keeps the hillsides green but there is a magical quality about watching the sky at night when the sun sets. We fell in love with this unique cottage. The owners live on property in the main house.
