About the host
Hosted by Bayard Brewin

We're family owners located in DC, originally from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Like a lot of working couples, we value those few weeks each year when we can stash the smartphones, turn on the Out of Office, grab our bathing suits / hiking shoes / a few good long books, and just rediscover each other in a place we love.
Why they chose this property
Our family of origin built this home nearly half a century ago, and has continually maintained and enjoyed it every year since. We first visited this village in the 1950s, returning to vacation here many times before finally deciding to build. Our summers there have defined key moments in our lives: sailing and swimming races, student theater productions at the Arts Center, trailblazing woods around the lake, hiking and camping in World's End and Ricketts Glen State Parks, and of course the town's annual Water Carnival. We love this place - and want to share it with couples and small families or groups who would savor a smarter, simpler, more intimate time away.
What makes this property unique
The reason for Windswept's name becomes clear the moment you drive down the ridge that leads to the house. On either side are teasers of the view to come - and then, shortly before arriving, the view unfurls on all three sides. Windswept itself is set in a wide meadow that used to be an apple orchard straddling both sides of this ridge - in fact, several of those trees still remain nearby the property. The home is a true log house from floor to ceiling, built from now-unavailable red cedar that still carries its original rich interior warmth. Away from the in-town bustle, you really get to enjoy a true mountain experience in space and pace: watching the area's rich assortment of birds and wildlife graze in the meadow and eat apples from the trees, deer as they pass across the property, and the occasional flock of grouse. The large private yard in back has its own gazebo and hammock, there's a deck that runs the length of the house and an open-air porch that runs its width - all of which makes it easy for you and your guests to stretch out, enjoy time with each other or a good book, play full-sized field games, grill together in the late afternoon, and toast a well-spent day at sunset. At night, the skies are incredibly wide, making stargazing and planet-spotting a regular ritual (even more so in August during the Perseid Meteor Shower). When you're ready to curl up, the fabulous fieldstone fireplace is a great setting for storytelling or reflection. A simple, cozy place of peace - we love it that way, and we think you will too.
