About this property

Special Secluded Cottage 3 Min Walk to Long Pond; ALL YEAR

A wonderful secluded cottage surrounded by trees yet very close to Long Pond, the finest of the Belgrade Lakes, known for its pristine water for swimming, boating and fishing. The third largest of the Belgrade Lakes it is 12 miles long and covers 2,557 acres.
We recently inherited the cottage from my parents, retired academics who picked this beautiful spot because it is quiet, ideal for reading, writing, and relaxing as well as the usual lake activities. We live in New Bedford, Massachusetts, but have had wonderful times at the cottage, enjoying the beauty of central Maine in every season.
The bargain rental rate is because the cottage is not on the lake, just a 3 minute walk away.
The property is part of a private association (Wildwood Estates) that maintains a sandy community swimming beach with a floating dock and swings for the children. A boat dock with kayak/canoe storage is a 3 minute walk from the cottage. The swimming beach is an 8 minute walk along the well-maintained, private dirt road.
One advantage of being near, but not on the lake, and surrounded by beautiful forest is that we are constantly visited by friendly wildlife: birds, chipmunks, the occasional deer, a wandering flock of wild turkeys, etc. And of course we can hear the wonderful sound of the loons in the evenings.
Although rustic looking, this modern well insulated cottage is only 30 years old and can sleep up to 8. There are two upstairs bedrooms, one with a king size bed with a posturepedic mattress, the other with 2 twin size beds. A fold out couch/futon is in the living room, and a futon with mattress is in the front enclosed porch room used in the summer months.
We are 1 hour drive from the Portland, Maine Jetport, 3 hours from Boston, 5 hours from New York, and 5 hours from Quebec, Canada. We are also about 25 minutes from Waterville which has an independent cinema (Railroad Square Cinema) and the award winning Colby College Art Museum. All the amenities and local towns & activities are listed below.

**FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN AN OFF-SEASON OR WINTER RENTAL:
In late September-October is the famous fall foliage season. with its magnificent colors. The locals call it 'leaf Peeping. There are some wonderful hiking trails in the immediate area.
In the WINTER there is great cross country skiing nearby with downhill skiing 27 miles away. One of the best down-hill skiing areas in the USA is Sugarloaf, 49 miles north which has 138 trails, the longest being 3.5 miles from summit to base. Then there is skating & ice fishing on Long Pond, a 3 minute walk from the cottage, where you can catch Northern pike, wide-mouth bass, salmon, & trout.
The cottage is fully winterized with baseboard heat and a wood stove. Long term rates are negotiable.

PETS: If you wish to bring a pet please email the details (species, age, size, and disposition). The yard is not fenced & is visited by deer, turkeys, etc.

Here is a comment from a 2 season renter:
"I have rented the Rose cottage for the past two summers and it has been delightful. It's peaceful and quiet; the only sounds you hear are tweets from the birds. The kitchen is very well equipped, from lobster pot to rolling pin. Cottage is very well furnished, with comfortable beds and internet connection. And there is a great variety of things to do in the area." --Sally from Florida

The cabin is definitely secluded. If that what you’re looking for you will love it. The cabin and the contents (furniture, dishes, pots/pans, cutlery, towels, decor, etc) are all well used and a bit shabby. The necessities were there and my stay was “comfortable,” although I didn’t spend much time at the cabin. The lake (boat launch) was about a 5 minute walk down the road. I never got to any beach however. I’d recommend it to anyone who is not looking for “new” or “updated.” Everything is “vintage” and “second hand.”
Pretty boat launch area.

Quiet and peaceful

We were touristing in Maine and using the cabin as home base for a week. It was so nice to get back to the peace and quiet after a busy day on the coast, in Portland, or the many other places we visited. Thank you!!

Rustic, with all the amenities you’ll need!

Comfortable, and cozy, this property was perfect for our stay. The property was fun for the kids to explore giant rocks and miss covered ground. And the neighbors were all hospitable and kind. The cabin is equipped with everything you’d ever need and we were able to locate and access everything very easily.

Quiet peaceful serene

Laura and Charlie were the absolute best hosts. Always a phone call away if there was ever a problem. We stayed 6 months in their cabin. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. If you have a chance to rent their property...do it ...you will not regret it. My husband and I miss charlie and Laura's chats on the phone. Hopefully we will be back. Ty for your sincere hospitality to us and our furbabies. ♥️

Perfect little hideaway

The location is a cozy little cabin right in the heart of the Belgrade lakes. The property was easy to find and access. It has everything we needed for a lovely stay, and we were able to access the lakes for fishing. Gentle suggestions are: a bit more attention to cleaning. The dishes, cutlery and coffee pot were not clean. The toilet also was not clean. There were cleaning supplies, but nothing to sanitize, like Lysol or bleach. We were very thankful for the wood stove; we would have been cold a very long time upon arrival as the electric heaters took ages o heat up. Suggestion is to supply a bit more wood/kindling, as the wood bin was completely empty on the side of the house, and there was very limited supply behind the garage. We purchased more in case during a snow storm. Also, the master bed is extremely hard and impossible to sleep on, we used the twins as they were far more comfortable. Otherwise lovely home, lovely area, and a very appreciated visit.

Quiet indeed

Rose Cottage is a quiet, peaceful place. The bedroom windows open on the trees behind the house; the TV-room futon is good for a nap; not far away is the shared dock with chairs and a porch swing to enjoy the stillness of the pond. The cottage has more than a well-equipped kitchen; it has a wealth of cookbooks. Now the stairs to the bedrooms are steep, making a midnight visit to the 1st-floor bathroom a challenge, but even then, there are nightlights to help.

Peaceful and beautiful

We loved the property because of the quiet and sounds of wildlife. It was just what we needed to decompress. The place had everything we need. The only thing missing would be a fire pit. We love having fires and many nights were perfect for it. We would absolutely come here again.
