About this property

Secluded Cabin on 132 Acres, 2 Miles to Purgatory Ski Area, Dogs Welcome

Our 1200 Sq ft, 3 bedroom, 3 bath, custom home was completely remodeled in 2013 and offers the most privacy and seclusion of any property near Purgatory as it sits on 132 acres, yet is less then 2 miles from the ski resort and 25 miles from downtown Durango. VRBO Listing 716605 is also on the property (1/4 mile away) and features 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and sleeps 6, if your group is bigger than our 3 bedroom alone can accommodate.

The kitchen is outfitted with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The main living space features a 46 inch flat screen TV and wood burning fireplace (wood provided).

The master bedroom has a king size bed, the other two bedrooms both have queen beds.

The property borders the Weminuche national Forest on the North and East, which is the largest and most unused wilderness area in the continental U.S. Their are numerous lakes and ponds on the property, and a road to higher elevations where the views of the surrounding mountains and lakes are spectacular. It is common to see bear, deer, elk, big horn sheep, snow shoe hares, ducks, geese, turkey, coyote, marmot, and the occasional mountain lion or moose. All of the pictures in the listing were taken from the property.

A 4WD/AWD with good tires is required December through March. If you plan to drive a vehicle not so equipped, please book elsewhere. Although the roads are extremely well maintained, we want to ensure our neighbors are not adversely impacted by our guests who may not regularly drive on snow packed roads.

Lastly, we love dogs, and they are totally welcome as long as they are well behaved and get along with people and other dogs. Lucy runs free on the property.

Amazing cabin in the woods

We rented the house for a long weekend to celebrate a family milestone. The house was amazing, loved that each bedroom had its own bathroom. Very clean and easy to communicate with the host. Would definitely stay there again if we are ever in the area.

Back Country Cabin

The cabin was exactually as advertised. It was located well off the highway on a dirt road which had some steep hills with ice. A fwd was required to get to the cabin. The cabin was fully equipped with everything we required. It was spotlessly clean. There was a small problem with the heater which Sean took care of immediately. We had five deer in the yard. We were far enough in the back country that we did not hear any other people during our stay. Recommend highly.

Beautiful Setting

Such a beautiful and well maintained cabin away from the city. We loved the open view to the mountains in the west. Also loved sitting out on the wrap-around porches and covered deck. Nicely stocked grocery store named PJ’s Gourmet Market about 20 minutes away in Trimble so it’s not even necessary to go into hectic Durango. Sean came by to meet us and was very informative about the property and the area. Highly recommend!

Perfect

It was absolutely beautiful and perfect for our family. It's secluded in the forest, very quiet and peaceful and literally 2 miles from Pergatory Ski Resort. The Owner's take very good care of this home, it was clean and had everything we needed including plenty of fire wood! There was record snowfall while we were there and Sean was out at 6:00 in the morning plowing and making sure we could get out to go to the Ski Resort. We loved it!

Peaceful easy feeling!

We can't say enough about this rental. It is clean, cozy, quiet, and perfect in location. You can hike and see nature's beauty right on the property. It was a treat to see chipmunks and marmots at play. The house was a perfect fit for our group of six. It is located close to several great trails and is an easy drive into Durango. The owner was very helpful with info on trails and activities/dining in the area. My kids (16 and 21) both said they preferred this trip over our usual beach trips. We will definitely return!

Perfect white Christmas

My family and I enjoyed our 8 day stay over the Christmas holiday. We arrived late and found the cabin heated and waiting for us. Sean suggested I had a good set of tires for the snow and he was right. Although Sean made sure the road to the cabin was plowed I am glad I took his suggestion. We had some cold nights, but everything was perfect for our first white Christmas. Thank you for the perfect vacation, The Blessinger family

Simply amazing!

The pictures don't do this house justice. It is perfect for couples, family, etc. Every room has its own bathroom. The kitchen is well stocked and plenty of spices. The view from the porch is absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the time outside when at the rental. The drive to the house is so fun, 4WD would be an absolute must in winter. Just book this house now. You will not regret it!!

Peace in the woods

We were greeted with a beautiful view and exceptional home, it was everything that was advertised and much more. The directions were easy to follow and we arrived with no problems. Though we never saw the owner, we could sense that if needed they would be there for us. A very warm and inviting home with all that anyone would need to enjoy time in the area. Though we did not eat out much, we did enjoy the area and many of the activities that were available. We love to travel with our dog and finding this home with the pet friendly option made it all the more enjoyable. We would highly recommend this to anyone staying in the area

Return Customers

Last year we (my husband and I and our three boys 16, 14, & 10) stayed at Sean’s two bedroom two bath cabin and loved it! This year we decided to stay in the cabin a little farther up the mountain. Again, we had a wonderful time! The cabin is very comfortable, nice washer & dryer, dishwasher, microwave, excellent stove, oven, & outdoor grill. Very good WiFi connection, but I never wanted to bother with getting on the internet. The views are spectacular and cabin is perfectly situated for going on a variety of hikes, or fishing, or making day trips in to Ouray or Silverton. Sean is very considerate, easy to get in touch with and has great communication with his guests! We can’t wait to return.

Best Stay EVER! Super relaxing!

If you want to stay in a beautiful place with amazing views and perfect amenities, then you should stay here! The house is < two miles from the Purgatory ski resort, but no hint or sound of traffic and no 30+ min drive back to Durango! (that drive seems longer after a day of skiing!) This is a newly rebuilt house and finished like at home; beautiful cabinets, granite countertops, etc.. The bathrooms are fantastic and each room has a private bath; beds are comfy with fluffy covers to snuggle into at night. The kitchen is well equipped and has more than just-the-basics. Nice appliances as well. If you stay in winter and expect ice/snow, then heed the notes in the description about AWD/4WD. Otherwise, I'm sure any vehicle would be fine in the summer as it is a nice dirt/gravel road all the way. The owner was super responsive to our questions and went out of his way to make us feel welcome and ensure we had a great visit, even offering sleds to our kids so they could ride the slope in front of the property. While there we received an overnight snow of 1.5+ feet. Before we finished breakfast and tried to figure out what to do; the owner plowed the drive and made a path for us...awesome!! We came primarily due to the proximity to the ski resort and for winter activities - snowmobiling, dog sledding, etc... However, this house would be perfect in the summer too. We will be back!!

About the host

Hosted by Sean McCormack

Host profile image
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.

Why they chose this property

This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings on the property, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.

What makes this property unique

There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.
