About this property

Tropical Garden On the Beach ! 2.5 Acre Lot on a White Sandy beach !

Welcome to Bilbo
a Historic Caribean House where the Forest meets de Sea …

Two thirds of Bilbo is « jungle » forest where you may have the opportunity of observing congos (hauling monkeys), sloths, eagles, iguanas, sugar bats , armadillos, and many wild animals and birds.

Frequently, Sargents will nest on the Hamaca Terrace. In 2014 it was on the Principal Terrace.

Bilbo was build in 1985, which in caribbean numbers makes it an « Old House », especially when you consider that most of the construction material was brought in from the Sea…

Untill 2002 Bilbo was the Winter Home of the environmentalist Mr. Maurice Strong.

His biographer says , Maurice arrived bearfooted in 1948 in Winnipeg at age 19, and 30 years after , in 1978, was nominated Chairman of PetroCanada… which seems quite a success !!!

In 1972, Maurice Strong organized the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, what became the First U.N. Earth Summit.
He was appointed as Secretary General of the Earth Summit for 1992, and is largely credited for bringing about what is today wellknown as the Kyoto Agreement.
In 1997 Maurice Strong was given the role of senior advisor to U.N. ‘s Secretary General Kofi Annam…

Various Costa Rican’s Presidents and VIP’s came to Bilbo to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the late 80’s. and early 90’s.

Since 2002, I have tried to maintain Bilbo in it’s original stature and simplicity, as a place to relax, enjoy nature and wilderness by the sea.

Have an early swim and surprise a giant turtle eating seaweeds from the coral reef… just 50 yards … from your bed !

You may be waked up by hauwling monkeys, admire hummingbirds and many others during early morning breakfast on the terrace,

Thereafter, look for sloths in the Guarumo trees, or have a walk though the jungle and admire the Ceibo Tree… at the end of the trail…
Milton, my gardner, will be so happy to show you his fascinating Forest…

Anita is at your service.
Enjoy Your Trip

Stay for adventure, not comfort or cleanliness!
I have thought for 2 weeks how to review this place. It's a tough one. The good: - Amazing location - Incredible animals. We watched howler monkeys up close for an entire 18 hour stretch - The beach is really close and is amazing - The towns, restaurants, shops, tours, etc. Are awesome, and some are world class - Animals everywhere. Agouti, two and three toed sloths, a small snake, howler monkeys, an anteater, cool birds - Tropical flora coming out your ears - management is very responsive (not necessarily effective) - Cool old house. Lots of geckos inside to eat the plentiful bugs The not so good: - My son couldn't sleep in one of the rooms for about 5 nights because it was crawling with ants. I bought ant killer and put it down pretty much everywhere. There was no time in our entire stay that we did not see at least a few ants around the house, despite me poisoning them and the management fumigating twice. - The top shelf and dishes on the top shelf in the kitchen is all covered in what looks like ant or termite dirt. I told them about it and they said they cleaned it, but when I came back it was just like I left it. - Termites have moved into the outer doors on the deck - Both shower heads are the worst ever - One toilet cannot flush toilet paper - Every crack and corner is dirty - power went out several times. Also, be sure you can live without AC. We left a few days early in order to give the kids a more comfortable end to our Costa Rica trip. It's a mixed bag

Great stay to enjoy the most beautiful beach right in front.
All good, except for the check in process. All in all a very pleasant stay and an amazing beach front find.

Well loved family cottage neglected
A one time loved family cottage that has been neglected too long. The beach & garden are lovely & we enjoyed the birds, monkeys, & sleuths. Even saw a huge boa constrictor in the grass one day We bought a grill & left it for the next guests, since the grill that came w property had rotted through. The laundry was not hooked up & even w a service call nothing got fixed. Showers & sinks drain outside the back of the house thru a hose. toilets & showers in lousy condition. Poor communication w owner. We stayed 2 weeks & had a lovely time. We were not expecting a 4 star property, I would give this 1/2 star. It has so much potential! Also neighbor dogs barked all night long.

Playa Chiquita house
The location of the house was good. However the kitchen was dirty and in poor shape and the pans were in very poor condition. Overall, the property is on auto pilot. The termites are winning the battle! Could have used a microwave. Gecko droppings on everything in kitchen. Nice walk to beach. Shower heads shot. Plumbing needs work. Nice wildlife.

Close Beach and Jungle Combined!
If you are looking for a real beach house and jungle experience, like we were, this is it! Walk down a pleasant, private drive to one of the most remarkable beaches we have experienced in Costa Rica. Clear water, low waves, excellent snorkeling. The beach house is set on a jungle lot with one house separating it from the beach. No beach view. Howler monkeys played in the trees, while we enjoyed coffee and breakfast from the open, grand covered porches. Indoor and outdoor showers are excellent. Host is appropriately attentive and checked in on us on the evening of our anticipated arrival to make sure we knew how to contact him if we had trouble. Caretaker was at the home to show us details, on our late arrival. Host solved problems quickly (within 1 hour). Remarkable customer service by host and care taker. This is a wood home set in a jungle and beach environment, with ample dining room, covered porch, bedroom and bathroom features. Kitchen is a bit quirky, but very functional. If you want a Hotel 4 Seasons experience, this is not it. If you want a unique and a little bit rustic home to enjoy in the jungle at the beach , this is it. We enjoyed it greatly!
