It was great to stay in a quieter area of Desert Island and still have the ability to get to the heart of Acadia within 30 minutes. It was the perfect spot for accessing lots of hiking and sight seeing options. We also loved that we could walk into Southwest Harbor for breakfast, dinner, snacks and shopping. The house was spacious and was relaxing for our family of 6 and our 2 dogs :) We would absolutely stay here again!

Fantastic place to stay. Walking distance to Southwest Harbor and short drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia Park entrance. Wonderful home and great for 4 couples or family.
Great location to beautiful Southwest Harbor and Acadia Park. Owners are awesome and made sure we felt welcome. Would stay here again. Perfect for 4 couples.
We really enjoyed our stay at Hidden Elm! The house was well appointed and had plenty of room to spread out in, yet still felt cozy. We really enjoyed sitting by the fireplace on a couple of colder, rainy afternoons. The yard is fully fenced in for anyone with dogs. The house is a quick walk to the restaurants and shops in SW Harbor (could eat at Clark Point Cafe every day) and just a few minutes drive from hiking at Acadia Mountain and Flying Mountain.
Everything about this rental was great from beginning to end. Communication was excellent, the space was clean and comfortable, and check in and out was easy. We highly recommend this rental. We hope to visit again!
Our entire family (including Oliver the Cairn Terrier) thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful home. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. Our granddaughter left a toy behind and they were kind enough to find it and return it
Property was one of the best- appointed properties we have rented. Cookware, flatware, utensils and paper products all in good supply. A/C units in bedrooms were all we needed. Location set back off the Main Street made it very private and a short walk( 4-5 minutes) put us downtown and able to access restaurants and shops. Access to Acadia and Bar Harbor was easy.
Hidden Elm is a beautiful, spacious house that perfectly accommodated our seven adults and one toddler. Walking distance to shopping, restaurants and nature. Easy access to Acadia and under 30 minutes to other scenic parts of the island. So many lovely features at the house, and a well-stocked kitchen made cooking fun. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
What an amazing property. Easy walk to downtown for breakfast, Beal's for dinner, close to Acadia. Clean, neat and very welcoming. It felt like being home. We brought our dog...I think that after 2 days she thought she was home or at least acted like she owned it. I can't thank Libby and Michael (property managers) enough for the little things that made this a special vacation. 7 adults...3 sons, a daughter, boyfriend and my wife and I havent had a family vacation together in 10 years...what an amazing trip. Sum up our stay in one word...WOW!
Wonderful location and very well maintained and appointed house. Welcome gift from the owner much appreciated as was the fully equipped kitchen. The master suite is large and very comfortable. The other three bedrooms are well separated from the master, which worked out great since we had two grandchildren staying for our first week. Our Labrador gave two paws up!The owners were very responsive to questions. Would definitely return.
Everything we needed was there! A lot of properties say they have everything, but this one actually delivered. The master bedroom and bathroom were beautiful and luxurious. Wish it was in my house!
House was perfect for a good sized group. Main bedroom is on the opposite side of the house from the other bedrooms, which is perfect if one couple goes to bed earlier than everyone else or has light sleepers. Kitchen was great and well stocked. Yard is beautiful. Porches are perfect for eating outside or just hanging out. Location is great. Right near the center of Southwest Harbor but still quiet when you're actually at the house. Farmers' Market and Craft Fair are less than a five minute walk away on weekends in summertime. Awesome place!
Our family of 5 had a lovely stay at Hidden Elm! The property is lovely, was very clean, lots of nice amenities (cookware, soaps, dishwasher detergent, laundry soap, comfy beds, sheets, and towels, etc.). LOVED the location--we enjoyed walking into SW Harbor, and easy driving into Acadia, Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, etc. The primary bedroom is set apart from the other 3 bedrooms which worked for us, and our two older children stayed upstairs. The baby stayed in the sitting room near the primary bedroom. Libby was a wonderful host! The steps are steep and both bathrooms are on the main level, but it all worked out great for our group. Would definitely stay at this house again!!

Best ever!
This was the most well equipped vacation rental we've ever stayed at. We brought a cooking pot and spices from home as we have found in the past that everything was not provided. Not the case here. We could have saved the room. The home was beautiful, the master bedroom and bathroom luxurious, and the village quaint. I would recommend this home without reservation.
We were initially very happy with our stay at Mike and Libby’s, until they had their fencing contractor come at 7 am and do extremely noisy work until 10:30. If you are looking for quiet, I would highly recommend contacting the host in advance. Also, there seems to be some kind of basketball camp adjacent to the property, so be prepared for the sound of kids and bouncing balls. It’s a charming old, tastefully decorated house, but in the heart of southwest harbor. Consider these factors if you’re looking for rest and relaxation. We probably wouldn’t have chosen it knowing about the noise level.

Response from VrboOwner on 8 July 2024
Hi Hannah, we always appreciate honest and constructive feedback, but after talking with the homeowner, we'd like to clarify the following points: - We own the neighboring property and the fence needed a small repair. The fencing company arrived at 7 a.m. and didn't start work until 8 a.m., as required by law. The repair was completed quickly in about 2.5 hours. We addressed our guests' concerns, personally apologizing for the unexpected noise. - There are no additional repairs or projects planned for the properties. - Please be aware that our listing includes a map showing that this property is located in the heart of Southwest Harbor, but we apologize that this caught you off guard - The sounds of children playing and other village life activities lend to the area's charm and vibrant community. We encourage travelers to research the area before booking, to decide if it's in their preferred location. As is evidenced by the many great reviews, these owners are accustomed to providing memorable experiences, and we look forward to this property hosting many happy travelers.

Hidden Elm is a Hidden Gem
Excellent stay from start to finish. HIdden Elm is a beautifully restored and expanded 1909 residence. As another reviewer noted, the furnishings and appointments are really amazing--truly like a real, cherished home rather than an Ikea-slick pure money rental. There is original, local artwork on every wall, a restaurant-quality gas range in the kitchen, and a master bedroom with a massive antique sleigh bed and a shower big enough to have a party in. Four separate outdoor decks, a top-end gas grill, and ample parking. Thoughtful touches abound, like a $25 gift certificate to a local gourmet shop, a pound of great coffee awaiting, and towels like a luxury hotel's. We were a family of three couples and a toddler, and Hidden Elm is big enough for all to come together, and for each to find separate space and peace as well. Though quiet and private, the house is also only 3 minutes' walk from downtown Southwest Harbor (don't miss the Little Notch Bakery) with its restaurants, shops, library, ice cream parlors, and more. Proximity to Acadia National Park made hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and climbing easy. Michael and Libby proved to be attentive, gracious, friendly hosts. We will return for sure.
The house is tucked back off the road, we were happy it wasn’t on the main road. The inside is perfectly maintained and beautiful.. VERY clean upon arrival. Spacious kitchen, well-stocked with cookware and a large fridge. An oversized island for the family to hang out while cooking. Had all the supplies for enjoying lobster on our last night. The master bedroom is secluded and private with a great bathroom .. amazing shower walk in with wonderful water pressure ! Beds were comfortable with very nice quality sheets and linens ! The living room was very comfortable, and nice to hang out in with everyone. It was about a 20 minute drive to get into Acadia National Park. We ended up going to Trenton Marketplace (IGA) which was 20 minutes away for groceries. Market in town didn’t have the greatest selection. Hannaford is also in Bar Harbor 20ish minutes away but we didn’t figure that out til the end of our trip. If you’re on the fence about booking this location.. do it ! You will not be disappointed !!!

Maine Stay
Nice cottage hidden away close to town. That fact was quite nice - a short walk to town to the bakery and restaurants. It is on the quiet side of MDI. My favorite thing about the house was the shower in the main bedroom. Good hot water and great pressure! It was quite nice on the cold days. Despite being close to town, it was rather quiet at the house, comfortable living room in which to relax.
The thing to consider about the house is that both bathrooms are on the same (main) level. This was a bit of a challenge in the night when nature called. The railing on the stairway is a bit awkward (low) especially for those who are tall and/or elderly using the upstairs bedrooms. We managed just fine, but we certainly did not run up and down the stairs.
Other than that, the house worked well and we’d stay there again on our next trip.
location was clean and kitchen well supplied. property appeared as shown on photographs. master en suite bathroom was very nice. cool nights made property very comfortable. stairs to second floor are very steep, and three upstairs bedrooms had to use first floor shared bathroom. it did not prove to be much of a hassle for any of the young adults sleeping upstairs. property was set back off main street for seclusion. walking distance to most everything in town. highly suggest doing grocery shopping on mainland before crossing water in Trenton. grocery prices were absolutely outrageous. not too many restaurant choices in town or on the western side of the island in general. Bar Harbor was very crowded, although it made for a good time when it rained on Labor Day. no complaints at all about property or its management. would definitely stay here again.
The house was very clean and comfortable. The checkin process was easy and efficient with a great bottle of wine to welcome us. The kitchen is well stocked for large family meals. The only downsize is not having a bathroom on the second floor. We were 2 families traveling together, a second on-suite bedroom/bathroom would have been great. However the 1 master suite is a great size and tucked away from the rest of the house.
Overall - Great In-town Location and Main Floor Including Master Suite.
Second floor - Bedrooms were good, but no second floor bath and stairs were steep.
