About this property

Creole Victorian for Families

Located in the heart of the Algiers Point Historical District, this 1889 classic follows the "shotgun" style layout, all the rooms in a line, with the kitchen and bath at the rear. There are two single beds in the first room, two queens in the second, and three singles in the third. If you need more beds, just ask! By city regulation I am limited to four adults, but there is no limit on children under twenty-one. I have yet to check anyone's I.D., though.
Algiers Point, the "best kept secret" of New Orleans, is just across the river from the French Quarter. A ten minute stroll on the riverfront bike path (or use bikes- I've got three, and more are easily rented)) brings you to the oldest continually operating ferry in the U.S., which makes the ten minute run every half hour. The river here is a half mile across, 260 feet deep and runs fast. Not to be missed! And you can see tall vessels sailing past from the porch!
There are two "OK" restaurants, one outstanding breakfast place, and three coffee shops within two or three blocks of your door.
There is lots of safe parking on the street just in front of your door for short or long term stays. The bathroom has lots of fresh towels, various toiletries, and an endless supply of hot water (at least I've never yet run out, even with twelve guests!) The kitchen is well stocked with all the regular breakfast items you expect: cold and hot cereal selections, eggs, breads, butter and other condiments, various fruits, yogurts, juices, milk, beer and wine, and soft drinks. There is a supermarket two miles off, and I am pleased to shop for any special diet items you might request. I have ducks in the back yard (kids love to feed them) which lets me offer you the freshest eggs you will ever have. The fencewd back yard is a safe place for your dog to frelax. The levee bike path is only a block away and goes for miles. I have three bikes and more can be rented easily enough. There is a new playground and park just a block away.
There is a swing on the front porch so you can sit and watch the herons in their nests high above in our immense, 200 year-old oaks, "Bearded in moss and in garments green, indistinct in the bayou's twilight", as Hawthorne wrote. There is wi-fi, of course, and a radio and TV with local stations and a large selection of DVDs. You will find this house quiet, comfortable, and just the way to get a real taste for the city. 420 friendly. Once more, though, I want to stress that this is sort of an "open dorm" configuration, and the only privacy is in the bathroom.

Amazing!

We will absolutely be returning! While the house isn’t located in the heart of the action (French Quarter), it’s conveniently close to the ferry for easy access. The host was incredibly kind, even accommodating our late checkout. The space offered plenty of sleeping areas, though not much privacy—which worked perfectly for us. Plus, the fridge was well-stocked with drinks and food, making our stay even more enjoyable. Looking forward to another quick getaway here!

I'd go back in a heartbeat

We loved this place but it wouldn't be for everyone. It's quaint and quirky, in a charming neighborhood, close to the river and the ferry, which is a fantastic bargain, get the Jazzy Pass which also includes unlimited rides on the streetcars and buses across the river. It has a cute front porch with a hanging swing and little pillows which we utilized in the evenings on the very quiet street. Rarely did a car go by.The shotgun style house is just that, so you'll need to be good friends since you're all sleeping essentially in one area. You walk into a living room with beds, into a second living room with beds, into a third living room with beds, into the kitchen and then separate bathroom. Decor is NOLA vibe, definitely not minimalistic and oddly interesting. It's a historic building and that essentially means it's old. There are ducks in the back yard which can be loud but we thought they were pretty cool. The owner, who lives on the other side of the duplex house, is a sweet older guy that thinks of the rental as a B&B, and readily supplies all kinds of things in the fridge and cupboards, like eggs, waffles, juices, coffee, breads, cheese and not the cheap kinds either . We cooked fabulous breakfasts both mornings and enjoyed the adult libations he also left us. As the title says, I'd go back in a heartbeat and although the others with me were not quite as enthusiastic about the place as I, they'd go back too!

Messy and didn’t feel safe

The host was not responsive at all. While the outside looked cute and quaint, the inside was another story. First of all, the locks through the house are not safe. They are wobbly and falling off. We had a chair up against the back door and had the coffee table pressed against the front door. One bed was completely unmade and two looked like someone had been sleeping in them. The neighbors were also rude about a PUBLIC parking spot and made us feel unsafe. The whole experience made us feel so unsafe that we didn’t even stay a night. As soon as we walked in and felt out the place, we did not feel safe to sleep there so we frantically searched the town for ANYWHERE else to stay because anywhere would be better than this place. I have never had an experience like this - especially with so many amazing previous reviews.

Super cool home in a beautiful and safe neighborhood

House felt like New Orleans. It was super cool and stocked with all kinds of goodies. There's a cheap ferry a short walk away that takes you across the river to the French quarter. Fantastic place to stay and will stay again next time I'm in New Orleans

Our second stay at this location. The house itself is not for everyone but we love it and will return. Communication with the owner is easy and so is the check in process. Very close to the ferry terminal and you’re in the quarter in just minutes. Overall a very good experience.

Character galore!!!

Simply the best VRBO I’ve stayed in and I’ve stayed in a bunch. Plenty of room for several people, historic home, historic neighborhood, ducks in the backyard, host had coffee and several other items stocked, host lives next store and is very responsive! My son left his cellphone there and we called to make sure we could get back in and get it. The host told us yes and that it was still open. Host even called us back to make sure we found the phone. Super guy and I’d love to stay there again.

Sister's Trip to NOLA

When I first wanted to find a place this listing was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to be in Algiers Point and in a "traditional" New Orleans house. It did not disappoint. Joey was so nice and attentive and Cleo is the best! Our favorite things here were the front porch and the varied decor in the home. Rooms and beds were clean and fresh and ample food in the fridge. Also you can't beat a safe neighborhood with an inexpensive ferry right to Canal St. I would definitely stay here again. 😊

1-Night Stay

This is the first place we've stayed that offered a refrigerator full of beer, wine, soda, snacks, and breakfast food 👍🏾. Plenty of sleep space with 6 comfortable beds. The overall interior was dusty (especially if you suffer from allergies). It can also use a new set of wash towels for bathing. However, the neighborhood was very quiet at night, and zero disturbances.

Love the ferry!

We usually try to stay in the French Quarter when in NOLA so that we can just walk everywhere, but both the hotels and the parking are so expensive. This house in Algiers Point is the perfect solution! The ferry is so close, and runs until 9:45pm, drops you off right at the aquarium. Waking up on a Saturday after a full day in the French Quarter we found the fridge fully stocked! What a happiness to have a full breakfast. The house is definitely set up to squeeze in as many beds as possible, so bring all of your friends for an amazing New Orleans getaway.

Don't waste your money

Let me preface this by saying the property owner gave a full refund. Arrived at 6 pm on check in day and found the door locked with no key. Called property owner and he said he didn't know what was going on but would be there shortly. When he arrived he got his key and went through the house. Someone was already staying there. Being as we booked first (8 months ago), we were able to stay and he put their stuff on the porch. We were willing to overlook this hiccup, because stuff happens, right? Get into the house, it's late, we've driven a long time, and we go to bed. Wake up the next morning and realize just how dirty the house is. Pubic hair in the tub, dirt everywhere, blanket were dirty/stained.... just altogether gross. The owner's dog bit my husband. More hurtles to our vacation, but fixable... until we wake up on the second morning. Bedbugs crawling on my husband and kid. One of my kids was bit over 40 times. We ended up cutting our trip short. The host refunded us immediately, but I do believe everyone should be aware of the true conditions in this home. Ps: there are no ducks

Algiers Point Rental

We spent 5 nights at this property and enjoyed our stay. The property owner is very personable and was very concerned about our comfort. He stocked the kitchen with basic staples and refrigerate with soft drinks, beer and wine. He provided fresh fruit and even beautiful flowers to grace our table. We'll certainly recommend this property and stay here again if we make our way back to New Orleans.

Shotgun house in Algiers

We felt like we were staying with family!!! My crew came to NOLA to celebrate a 21st birthday and had an incredible experience. We have all stayed at several vacation homes and this is by FAR the best stocked!!! Joey has thought of everything. His quirky home is an antique beauty! We chose not to stay in the Quarter for many reasons, and chose Algiers because we didn’t want to stay “in the action”. We were a short 30 minute commute to the craziness, noise, and crime of the tourist areas. We used the public transportation and took the ferry into downtown. From there we accessed the entire city. When we came back from the hustle and bustle of city life we relaxed at the adorable English pub just a short walk from our rental. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience!!

First time in NOLA

The house definitely has that New Orleans vibe. The owner was very nice and hospitable. This place could be 100% amazing. Positive- the space is great and theres plenty of bedding. The owner stocking the kitchen was a nice touch. The shower had good pressure and nice hot water. Negative- It needs some maintance done. The flooring by the back door is giving and has a peice of plywood over it. Theres huge gaps around both doors, allowing drafts to come in. We actually had to put blankets around them. It definitely needs to be cleaned better. The more things you have the more cleaning it needs. Layers of dust on the floor that was actually visible. Dust on stuffed animal decor and tons on the ceiling fans. The thermostat and tv remotes needed batteries, I bought some. There is plenty of bedding which is great, however you sank in them and couldn't move easily. Theres no fire alarm in the back of the house. Theres only one small one in the front room. This information is to only benefit the property not to bash.

About the host

Hosted by Joey Dowdall

Host profile image
Hi there! I'm a retired school teacher, and after years in L.A. moved here to New Orleans in 2014 to be near my son and his family. And what a good bit of luck that was. I wanted a move, but had thought I would go back to my childhood home near Cooperstown, NY, but now I am SO HAPPY to be ion this wonderful city where I can wear a silly costume any time I want! Starting this bed and breakfast place was rough at first, but now, after three years, it is a wonderful experience for me, and I hope for you as well.

Why they chose this property

Just read the description. Nowhere else can so many find so much value and beauty so close to the city. Period.

What makes this property unique

As the description states, there is great comfort and real savings in a great location for a big family.
