My family had a wonderful little getaway! The cabin was very cozy and quaint, just perfect! We also appreciated the coffee and condiments in the fridge as a courtesy. It was very windy weather when we visited, so we did not end up using the paddle boat or kayaks. However, my kids loved the floating raft off the dock and we all enjoyed the hot tub! Perfect location in Southern IL and would most definitely stay at a property of Kris’ and her husband’s in the future!!
Gorgeous cabin, with a very kind and gracious host. Everything was in tip-top shape, and we enjoyed the Christmas decorations, as well as the gas grill and hot tub. We will be back!
The space was absolutely as described. The hosts were very nice. There were a lot of extras that were appreciated. The area is beautiful. We will definitely be visiting again. Recommend for a cozy get away.
We had a wonderful stay, the lake was peaceful and the kids loved the paddle boards. The property owners really thought of everything and all we had to bring was food, clothes, and hygiene products. We would definitely stay here again in the future
Very welcoming and comfortable. The host was amazing with her assistance and l would most definitely recommend this cabin to friends and family. We look forward to returning and experiencing some of her other vacation properties
My husband and I had a great time at this little cabin! It made for a very relaxing weekend together. The location is perfect and in a very quiet area. We enjoyed watching the deer while eating breakfast! We also had fun with the paddle boats and canoe. There are some great places to eat close by in Marion, but the cabin was also very well equipped for us to just make most of our meals right there.
We absolutely loved coming back this cabin each day after hiking nearby spots. Our boys loved the little loft with the ladder and told us countless times they wanted to come back again sometime.
We couldn't be happier with the accommodations or with our stay. Kris is a great communicator and a very hospitable host. We had absolutely everything we needed. The cabin is spacious, clean, and well appointed. My husband and I will definitely return to this property in the future.
Kris and Matt went above and beyond with their hospitality. So welcoming from the start. The cabin was fantastic and the lake was stunning. We had an absolutely awesome time. We will definitely be back!
Everything was awesome! The only drawback is the climb down to the lake. Kris and Matt are great hosts!!

This property was adorable and we would love to return in the near future. We met the owners who live across the street and they are very friendly, all their properties in the area look just as nice - well maintained and rustic. Easy access to lake for canoeing/kayaking too. We love this area but we came to town specifically for Vulture Fest which was disappointing/not what we expected so it was nice to have this little retreat.
Always great to be on this lake on July 4th. Cabin had everything we needed to enjoy our long weekend. I was disappointed in not being able to tie our boat onto the dock, but appreciated the use of the paddleboards and kayaks. Access to the dock was a hike!

Thank you for your kind words. I’m so sorry, Maribeth, that the dock situation wasn’t clear. You absolutely could’ve tied up to the dock. We recommended the other docks because of the crazy 4th of July boat traffic and all the guests- we wanted to be sure your boat was safe. I’m sorry it was a hike and next time, you can tie up to any of the docks at the bottom of the hill!
The property is off the lake but has access within 100 ft with a canoe, paddle boat, paddle boards, and even a stargazing deck. The owners are responsive, kind, and neighborly- they even brought over coffee filters and maple syrup! We loved staying here, and the cabin has tons of little touches that make it memorable, homey, and lux all at the same time. I’d suggest the red roof retreat to a couple of a couple with one or two kids for an outdoor/indoor getaway!

Thank you Teagan, for your review! We loved meeting you and hosting you at the Red Roof Retreat. You are welcome back anytime!
The cabin is adorable and just the right size for 1 - 4 people (if at least 2 are kids). Very clean. This trip was just me but I plan to bring my two kids with me next time. The master bed is comfortable. Access to the doc, canoe, paddle boats, etc is simple and even though it is shared, pretty private, too. Day tripping around the area was amazing. There is so much to see and the landscape is beautiful.
We had a wonderful stay with Red Roof Retreats! The home was cozy and warm, perfect for a cold winter weekend getaway. We visited right before the holidays and the cabin was full of Christmas decorations, which we enjoyed. We were able to cook, watch movies, and relax, and the location was great - just a short walk to the lake and a short drive to Fern Clyffe State Park. Our host communicated with us during our stay and helped us feel welcome. We loved the welcome basket and recommendations of things to do in the area, and small touches like cold beer mugs in the freezer. Only word of caution would be for taller and larger folks, the twin loft beds are pretty short and you may have a hard time with the loft ceilings. For us, it was perfect, and we will be back again!

The Red Roof Retreat was just that...a retreat!
I actually wanted to book a larger cabin but boy am I glad I choose the Red Roof Retreat, it was perfect! Accommodated 4 adults perfectly. We wanted for nothing. It was so clean and tidy we felt right at home and owners answered questions immediately even though they were on their own vacation! Fishing was awesome and the lake is beautiful. The cabin is so charming and full of character, now that I'm home I miss it!
The visitor comments left in the cabin were helpful too, suggestions for places to visit and where to eat. I'd like to tell my friends about the Red Roof Retreat, but the less people know about this hidden gem...the better! More weekends for me!
If you stay here you MUST go zip lining at Shawnee Bluff Zip Tours. Rented a pontoon from Mack's Marina, super friendly and great daily rate.

About the host
Hosted by Kris Shellabarger
We love our own log cabin on the lake so much that we built another one to share with others. Our guests loved the log cabin so much that we built more rentals. We spend much of the summer boating, fishing and swimming during the day and sitting around the fire at night. We also love to check out the local farmer's markets and wineries and sometimes hit the antique stores. In the winter, it is so cozy and we love to hike and catch up on a good book.
Why they chose this property
Lake living is what we love and after we built our log cabin, we wanted to build another smaller version to share with others. We built this across the street from the lake, but still with a dock and lake access. It was so popular, we built more vacation rentals on Lake of Egypt.
What makes this property unique
Peaceful, charming, warm and a great place to relax after a day of hiking, biking, boating, fishing or antiquing! Cozy fireplace for cooler evenings and winter retreats!
