This house had the most beautiful views and we loved exploring the woods and the surrounding area! So quiet and peaceful, we will definitely be returning!
We stayed here after our grandchild was born. It was a perfect place to call home for over 2 weeks. The view is spectacular. Home has everything you need. Was very pleased.
This was a getaway for a small group of friends - we couldn't keep our eyes off of the view of the mountains whenever we went outside, or even when we would look out of the windows. The house and property are well-kept - the owners were very quick to respond to any questions, and were very helpful. A must for anyone looking for a rural getaway that's still close to nearby small towns. Comfy, cozy, and beautiful - what else is there to say?
The views were amazing, wildlife was active (butterflies, hummingbirds and deer), kitchen was fully stocked with spices available, beds were comfortable and toys/games were available to entertain the kids when we needed a break or to cook. Situated within a reasonable driving distance to various activities like Grayson Highlands SP (50 mins), the Virginia Creeper Trail (1.5 hrs) and canoeing in NC (35 mins). There's canoeing in Independence too (17 mins), we just went to NC bc of the weather being clearer.
Remote quiet natural setting. House is very comfortable. Views are extraordinary. The perfect place for me to unwind from the otherwise craziness of my life.
The view the home has is enough of a reason to stay at the location. The home offers a large back deck which allows you to see beautiful views for miles while drinking morning coffee or eating dinner. The home was well equipped with everything we could have needed and had something for everyone. We had early communication with property manager who was easy to communicate with and helped with our stay. Will definitely stay here again.
A great place to relax with friends, cook, play games, listen to music, and look out for miles to the East, where the sunrises were gorgeous on clear mornings.
The home was incredibly well-equipped and spacious for at least 4 adults with children. It's nice to have three separate floors and a big back deck, with an open kitchen.
We were also very happy with the surrounding area. Conveniences (food store, restaurants, gas stations, etc.) were plentiful. The local people we ran into were happy we were visiting and proud of their quaint town and area. We walked the New River Trail a couple of times and it's nice and level with great scenery.
We plan to return, maybe as an annual tradition. Also very good value, as we've stayed in vastly more expensive places without much upside.
Excellent property with the most beautiful long range views! It’s was so peaceful and relaxing to stay here! Spent most of our time in the day sitting on the back deck. Very clean and comfortable. Would love to stay again in the future!
We had a wonderful vacation experience at Whitetail Spur. The house is bright, beautiful, and very comfortable. The kitchen and laundry were well equipped. Everything was clean and well maintained. The location is secluded and quiet with an amazing view of the mountains and valley. We enjoyed the hiking and the biking on the New River Trail. Shopping is less than a 30-minute drive to Galax and 10 minutes to Independence. The host's Clay and Kristen were excellent to work with, attentive and responsive. This was our second stay at Whitetail Spur, and we plan to return.

Perfect place for a dose of solitude and nature. This house is just what we needed! For us it was sunshine and coffee. The huge deck and beautiful rays called to us each morning and led to cup after cup of perfection and soaking in the Mountain view. It’s a long drive from Richmond- where we are from, but the mist on the valley and the stars at night made every minute worth it. If you are a cook, this property has everything you need! Honestly, the kitchen was overly stocked with equipment and utensils. We easily made fried chicken, and shrimp scampi in the kitchen and hot dogs on the campfire. Perfect upstairs for kiddos to lounge and watch cartoons, and then laugh together in the bunk beds at night. Hosts were easy to contact and check in was a breeze. House has trash bags and dish soap and all the simple extras that make setting up shop for a few days super easy. Even an Amazon Alexa! Hiking the property could fill a day in and of itself. Acres and acres of slopes and beautiful views. I even sat and played guitar sitting on a hillside. Will come back to stay again! Thanks.
I was going to title this “do not stay here unless...”
unless you want the cleanest house,
The most amazing views,
The best communication,
Overly equipped and stocked kitchen,
And most serene and peaceful location.
Of any of the above is what you are looking for.... look no further.
I’d give it 0 stars if that was an option.
Thank you Clay and Kristen.
Inside the property, very clean. Inside the Living area, could look outside and had a spectacular view. Was lucky enough to have great weather during our stay. When I contacted the Owner before our stay, about a couple of questions, got a promt reply. Would definately like to visit this Property again.
We had the most wonderful stay at Whitetail Spur!! I cannot recommend this property enough - the pictures do not do it justice! The views are spectacular and the setting is so relaxing. This was just the disconnection that we needed to enjoy the beauty of the blue ridge mountains and local parks with our family. Clay & Kristen were the most responsive hosts and the house was just as described. We were able to enjoy Grayson Highlands State Park, local trails, golfing & explored the town of Independence! Highly recommend - there really is something for everyone in this beautiful part of the country! Thank you Clay & Kristen for sharing your gorgeous home with us! We hope to return!
Everything about this home was perfect for us. The view of the sunrise is unbeatable. The back of the house offers a long view of mountains, valley, sunrise and stars from the main level, loft and from the large deck. The stars and night sky really shine here and you can view them through the telescope and binoculars. We are cyclists who like to climb mountains and we could ride out the door on rural, near car-free roads and to the mountain biking trails. We appreciated the home’s layout and flow making everything accessible inside while keeping us connected to the gorgeous views outside. The house is super comfortable and clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen is well furnished, as is the rest of the house. The bed and top quality linens were very comfortable. The owners have succeeded in providing everything for an excellent experience including helpful information in the guest book and in the welcome package sent before arrival and are very available, helpful, responsive and friendly. Come for the sunrise, the stars, the tranquility.
After the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated canceling our international travel plans, we were searching for a safe, quiet place to vacation closer to home. Whitetail Spur was the perfect spot!
Very comfortable home in a quiet, private location. Great view of Elk Creek valley and the distant mountains... either from the living room or the outdoor deck. Saw lots of wildlife visiting the property including several deer, a couple of bear, turkeys, many rabbits, and a woodchuck... plus lots of birds & butterflies.
The interior of the home was very clean & comfortable (slept very soundly in the comfy master bedroom)! Up to date kitchen appliances & good quality BBQ grill made it easy & enjoyable to cook great meals.
Close to a variety of spots for outdoor adventures including Grayson Highlands State Park, Mt. Rogers Recreation Area, the New River & New River Trail, etc.
The owners (Clay & Kristen) were very responsive & a pleasure to work with.
Overall a great experience during a very challenging time. We will return again...hopefully when the world is much healthier!
Our time at Whitetail Spur was an excellent vacation experience. A private and quiet location close to Independence Va with a beautiful view. The house is clean and spacious with up to date technology. The kitchen is well equipped. And, the beds are comfortable. The owner was responsive and accommodating.
We will certainly be back!
A very beautiful house in a gorgeous area. Secluded enough to stay to yourself, but close enough to town for anything you might need. The stay is very affordable and Clay and Karen were more than accommodating. I wish I didn't have to leave. I will be returning again and again.
A wonderful home which was very clean and organized. The owners clearly care about this home and want the renters experience to be enjoyable, which it most definitely was. The property is beautiful and the mountain views are majestic. We are already looking forward to our next visit.
We loved this property and house. It was amazing! My family from Idaho was with me and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Did not want to leave. Would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks so much for stocking the house with so many useful items. Hope to visit it again someday. Sandra B.
