About this property

Views, views and more views from every room in Oceanside Home

From the moment you walk into the lofty, light-filled entrance hall of this contemporary solar home, you know you’re in a beautifully appointed ocean-front house, where nearly every room boasts a commanding view of Martha’s Vineyard, the Elizabeth Islands, Buzzard’s Bay, Horseneck and Goosewing Beaches and Little Compton’s legendary Town Beach.

You’ll feel right at home cooking up meals simple or lavish in the eat-in kitchen, complete with stylish cookware and dishware, upgraded appliances and everything you need in one well-organized space. The kitchen opens onto an expansive multi-level deck with gas grill, dining and lounging furniture, equally suitable for lively entertaining or a quiet tete-a-tete, bird-watching, surfer watching, boat spotting or just taking in breathtaking 180-degree panoramic views.

With walls of glass, the living and dining rooms capture those same stunning views, connecting you to surrounding land and seascapes no matter where you are. An open floor plan, handsome hardwood floors, a massive stone fireplace with gas insert, modern whole-house HVAC systems and beachy furniture make these spaces equally comfortable and practical whether lounging or hosting.

The house boasts two master bedrooms with king be plus two queen bedrooms. The top floor king master bedroom is a true hideaway. With a soaring cathedral ceiling, private cantilevered deck for star gazing or solitude, unparalleled views and half-bath, it is a place to wake up gently with the rising sun or sleep late with the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the rocks below. On the main floor, the Sea Shell master bedroom, adjacent to the main bathroom, features floor-to-ceiling operable windows for maximum light and views, king bed with Casper mattress and built-in closet. The cozy Sea Glass room also adjacent to the main bathroom features a queen bed. The upgraded full bath with 50's-themed decor is shared by the bedrooms.

Downstairs on the first floor, a large room with separate entrance opens to a natural pollinator area. A secluded path bisects the wildlife garden and leads to an outdoor fire-pot and seating area. Inside, the home office suite with more glorious views of the North Atlantic, features a convertible futon couch, queen bed, and full bathroom with double shower. With hi-speed Internet throughout the house, a working vacation at this location is always an option.

Getting to your private rock beach is easy with a convenient stairway leading to the water’s edge and featuring a landing, just big enough for two people to enjoy cocktails above the surf. And after dinner you can toast marshmallows with a campfire at the on the rocks.

In addition to wi-fi, the house comes complete with cable TV with streaming option. Sumptuous all-cotton linens, towels and beach towels are included in the rental price; each bed is appointed with multiple pillows, a cotton blanket and a down comforter and towels.

Inside the two-car garage you will find EV power for your electric vehicle. Linger in the garage to admire the fabulous murals painted by the original owner, Grandpa Beau Garreau.

This one-of-a-kind house is located a short walk to the Town Beach, biking distance to the charming Commons, Sakonnet Point and Sakonnet Lobster. Also nearby are Wishing Stone Farm Market, Walker’s farm market and eatery, Young’s nursery and roadside market. Lee’s Market, the locally owned gourmet supermarket in cozy Westport, is just up the road. On the weekends, no fewer than five farmers markets are open each spring and summer.

About the host

Hosted by Joel Garreau

Host profile image
The Garreau house has been the family vacation home since 1953 when Beau Garreau built a modest two-bedroom bungalow for him and his wife and son. Joel grew up spending every summer leaping rock to rock along the edge of the water; clamming in Tunipus Pond and exploring the open fields and marshes around the house with his summer friends. In 1975 Beau and Glo expanded the house to its current size. Now, Joel and Adrienne live in Virginia but continued the family tradition of summer vacations in Little Compton, bringing the next two generations of Garreaus with them. Their two daughters grew up here also and, even though now busy with their own lives, they each come every year for some part of the summer. With the arrival in 2017 of Louis, a fourth generation of Garreaus is now enjoying summer vacations in Little Compton. Joel is professor emeritus attached to the office of the president at Arizona State University in Tempe. Adrienne works in community development in the county where they live in Virginia. When they are not in Virginia or traveling, they spend as much time as they can in Little Compton.
