About this property
Mountain Hideaway Mudgee - Unique Stay
Situated 10 minutes drive from Mudgee, 'Tahoma' is a fantastic 'get away from it all', yet close enough to take advantage of the local markets, shops, cafes and wineries.
Tahoma can be what you want it to be, a romantic getaway for two, fun family times, friends enjoying a weekend together, or a solitary retreat for the writer, artist or contemplator to spend some time.
3 bedrooms for up to 8 guests. Nestled on a hill with beautiful uninterrupted views .
The space We are approximtely 3.5 hours drive from Sydney Central.
The cottage is very private, fully self contained, tastefully furnished and nestled at the top of a hill with beautiful uninterrupted views, set amidst 150 acres of natural bushland. Old trails make for some fun hikes or rides for those who want to go adventuring and perhaps come across some local wildlife. The property has kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, large goannas and you might even see some deer, goats or pigs.
Of an evening, watch the sunset and light your firepit (firebans permitting) or stay inside with the warmth of the large pot belly and enjoy a romantic evening with a partner, or fun with family or friends.
The linen press is full of old styled boxed games and there are plenty of books to read.
Mudgee boasts many fine wineries and tour operators that will pick you up from the property.
ACCESS: (VERY IMPORTANT to read before booking) It can make the booking process quicker if you let me know upon enquiry that you have read this and are all ok with it.
This is a true country property with the cottage up a steep incline (oh what we do for views, remoteness, romanticness and solitude!). This is not city driving it is a country property with terrain to match. The access road to property is about 500 meters of dirt road which can be bumpy and uneven. There is a small shallow creek crossing which is usually an inch or two deep. Little and low cars aren't appropriate.
In Short: A 4WD or AWD SUV is the best, however if you are a confident driver a front wheel SUV works too. A small and/or low car is unsuitable.
If you do not have an SUV or AWD or 4WD, all is not lost, some guests traveling in groups have parked their smaller cars at front gate and hopped into a friends SUV and travelled up to the cottage, we even had group on bikes at one stage leave their bikes down below and trekked up to the cottage! Where there is a will there is a way!
Technology and TV
We now have Wifi
There is a booster for full vodofone reception. For Testra it depends where you are standing in the house or on property. We don't have much luck with Optus.

Great accommodating host, who provides for our ( and 2 french Bulldogs) every need! And a fantastic quiet 'hideaway' to read, wine and cheese at sunset, or to tour the area from. Comfy, clean andwell appointed
Very pet friendly, quiet nestled in the hills, hideaway property. Clean property with a host who takes pride in ensuring privacy. Unwind reading a book with coffee overlooking the valley, or snuggling in front of the wood heater fire in winter with a wine, it meets all your needs.
A great place for a relaxing stay. Comfy and tranquil.

Thanks for the wonderful review Sharon, I am so happy you enjoyed your stay in our little private ‘nest on the hill’. Thank you so much for taking such great care of the cottage. Welcome back anytime.
We had a fantastic stay. The beautiful scenery , the peacefulness and the comfortable cottage all made for a relaxing and well needed getaway. We loved the fire pit location, the wildlife and exploring the trails etc. We will definitely be back. Thanks Janene for being a great host.
Mountain retreat was the perfect secluded spot for us to relax with our family. We loved our stay - the wildlife, the ability to let our dogs play out the front of the cabin, a hearty fire with the stars above for dinner. Just perfect! We love Mudgee, so we'll be back for sure.
Janene was also amazing with communication of the road condition following a lot of rain, so thanks so much.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Tahoma, 7 days just wasn’t enough! The house was amazing with lots of added touches, the fires kept us cosy and we were very comfortable. The quietness and fantastic view of the surrounding valley and hills gave us a feeling of serenity. The orientation of the cottage had sunshine beaming in most of the day which was ideal. Tahoma exceeded our expectations and we can’t wait to return one day.

We had such a relaxing time at Mullamuddy. Imagine a wine in hand, sitting around the fire overlooking spectacular views. We loved all the homely and thoughtful touches especially the marshmallows and snacks for the kids! We also loved walking around the property exploring. The description is right- definitely need a 4wd vehicle to make it up that driveway.
We only wish there was a shower curtain.
Highly recommend spending some time away from it all in this relaxing place.

So wonderful you enjoyed your stay! It’s a little secret hideaway but close enough to Mudgee to make it perfect for touring around.
Just a clarification on access, any front wheel drive or SUV type vehicle can navigate the hill ( doesn’t particularly need a 4WD) I drive an Audi Q3 for example :)
Taking your suggestion of shower curtain on board though will look into it! Thankyou ! 💫 cheers and thanks for the great review !
Very secluded, quiet, treechange getaway. Reading a book overlooking the valley, a few wines and cheese watching the sunset. The only sounds that wake you up are birds and sheep that you can just see in the distance. Fully furnished with all mod-cons and internet if you wish to use it. We will be visiting again in winter to snuggle up to the wood heater and fire pit of an evening.
We had a wonderful stay. The location is perfect for peace, privacy and wonderful views, yet easy access to town. Loved utilising the outdoor fire pit & exploring the surrounding area with our dog.
Our only comment is that the house itself needs a bit of love & maintenance. There are many little things that have been overlooked, broken soap dispensers, ripped or no fly screens, nails protruding on kitchen edging, lights in living area not working, mould on bathroom window frames & a fair bit of dust not wiped down.
We would stay again as these things didn't bother us too much, just took a little shine off the stay. The place has incredible potential!

So glad you enjoyed your stay! I closed my eyes and visualised your description and saw a run down unloved place which our little cottage is not. So just to respond. 1. Soap dispensers all functional. The pump function needed replacing. 2.. There are fly screens on all the bedroom and two of the living room windows. There is a little tear in one. 3. A piece of decorative wood along the bottom of the servery comes lose when kicked which exposes the nails, I have been hammering it back in but the darn thing won’t behave so have had to use some screws. All fixed. 4. The living room lights work, globe hasn’t been replaced in a year. Still working. Maybe didn’t find switch ? 5. No mould on bathroom window. 6. Every surface is wiped down between guests, although this is the country so dust can settle as quickly as you turn around. ( facts lol). Cheers !
Lovely, secluded cottage with excellent views. The addition of A/C to the sunroom / 3rd bedroom is a big plus, and was much appreciated by our group (37 degree days). This room also now has a double bed and futon (current photos show bunk bed / lounge) which would make for a nice retreat space for a third couple if traveling as a group without children.
We had fun with the board games, and would have loved to have enjoyed the firepit, but the heatwave weather nixed that for us. Perhaps another time !
And don't underestimate the recommendation for a 4WD or AWD SUV to tackle the driveway and hills to get the most out of your stay.

Thanks for being lovely guests Damon, glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes, there is a reason I don't take instant bookings, always worried someone will turn up in a sports car! SUV (or better) required. Although I did have a recent guest who turned up in a mercedes and they drove the hill! couldn't believe it (eek) !

Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication
Disliked: Location, listing accuracy
Serenity and seclusion, but
The house was very clean.
Janene stayed in touch with us throughout our stay and made sure that everything is ok. I grew up on a farm myself, but the road leading to the property is so bad, you'd struggle even with a 4 WD. There is building material everywhere on the property, tools there is even an old caravan. Needs a very good clean up
The 3rd bedroom I believe used to be a sunroom, it doesn't have an A/C, I slept on the couch in the living area for 3 nights cause it was too hot.

In response to Zac’s review and rating for his New Years Eve stay:-
1. Access - Before approving each booking I ask the type of vehicle a guest is bringing as I did with Zac. He told me he had a vehicle that was ‘not’ suitable and assured me he could leave it at front gate. The road is fine for average drivers with a 4WD, AWD, SUV or similar as travelled by hundreds of our other guests, over many years, with no complaints.
2. Off-limit Areas. On our 160 acre property, areas where there are building materials, tools, cottages and a caravan are in private, out of view areas we are working on. They are not in view of the cottage and so do not impact our guests stay. Guests are not allowed in these work/Reno areas in accordance with our house rules.
3. Yes, the lovely 3rd bedroom with the big window and view is off front veranda as advertised. It does get hot in summer but up till now fans have been enough for guests. I am unsure why guest slept on sofa when there were two bedrooms within air conditioned cottage. I’ve taken this as an improvement suggestion and ordered an A/C for this outer room which will be installed in the next week.
The place was immaculate, very clean and had a quiet country feel to it.
Janene the owner was easy to get in contact with and was happy to answer any inquiries asked of me. I would definitely come back again.

Thanks for the lovely review James. You are welcome back anytime, wonderful guests!
Older style property, tastefully renovated (rain-head in bathroom superb) 20min from town. It's a pretty drive along Queens Pinch Rd, then a fairly rough/steep drive up to house (4wd definitely recommended). When you reach the house at the top you have total serenity, with great sunset views from the campfire. The room off the verandah was too hot to really use in January as it has full glass windows, but the air-con inside the main house was totally fine. Janene is a lovely host & popped over the second we had a problem with the hot water, & it was an easy fix. If you like simple living, are fine with the odd creepy crawly & want seclusion, this is a great stay. Its good value for $. We fell in love with it more each day .
We had a wonderful weekend at Tahoma. The location is secluded and relaxing but close enough to explore the wineries. We enjoyed the outdoor fire pit along with good tunes (no neighbours 😉)perfect for a winter stay. The property was very clean and had everything you need along with some lovely little touches when you arrive. Communication with the host was great! Highly recommend 😊
The driveway is steep but well worth the trip to the top. The remote location is fantastic and it's only a quick 10 min trip to town. The outdoor fire was great with a few wines and some music on. We also enjoyed a few DVDs. We thoroughly enjoyed the rural break, the wildlife with all the thoughtful creature comforts at Tahoma.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay Sarah! thanks for taking such great care of Tahoma as well!
Tahoma was so peaceful and relaxing. The views from the house are awesome and we trekked to the top of the hill and they were even more amazing! Sitting around the outdoor fire, we had a beautiful view of the stars and jagged a full moon as well. A great getaway still close enough to the wineries and to Mudgee township that you have the best of both worlds!

What makes this property unique
It is so lovely to have 'space' around you in a world where privacy is getting less and less, yet have a place that is close enough to town not to feel isolated. Being able to see nature all around you, whether it is encountering an echidna or waking up to a kangaroo in your yard is just fabulous.
