About the host
Hosted by Lucy Darbishire
I first visited the Var 20 years ago and immediately loved all it had to offer especially the climate. It was always my dream to spend as much time as possible in France as I studied French at uni and having a good knowledge of French has been a great help with the management of the house. I visited many other parts of France before finally having the opportunity to visit this area and I never looked back! I am passionate about all things French so it really is a joy to spend time at the villa. I especially love the provençal markets within easy reach of the house, and the large Sunday morning brocante that is now within walking distance due to its relocation, the problem is always working out how to get it all home! I have very much enjoyed making the house feel like a real home that has had much thought and love put into it. I have 4 boys, all now grown up and they also love the house and the lifestyle. It is a great place to spend time together, enjoying the house and pool, the beaches and of course they love being able to head into St Tropez or off to Pampelonne at a moment's notice!
Why they chose this property
The Var is a beautiful region with an amazing unspoilt coastline. This house appealed immediately, of all the houses we viewed, it felt like 'the one'. It is situated just away from the main traffic route in and out of St Tropez, which is a real bonus but yet close enough to be able to get there very easily. St Tropez needs no introduction and it truly is a fascinating place to get to know, in and out of season, there is much more to it than just the glitz and glamour. There is a very different rather serene atmosphere if you go early in the morning and enjoy coffee and a wander round. Equally, you would never know you are so near to everything and could just enjoy the more rural aspect of the area - the house has lots of walk choices into the surrounding woodland, there are many paths, and popping up the hill to the right of the house to take in the view across to Grimaud is un uplifting morning walk. For those who love polo, or who are simply curious to experience a match, try dropping in informally on a match during the tournament season as Les Haras de Gassin polo ground is only 5 minutes away. I would strongly recommend trying a visit to the house in May, early June or September and October as the area usually enjoys beautiful weather, in spring the flowers and blossom are all around and in September and even October, the days are still hot but it is so relaxing out of season.
What makes this property unique
The house enjoys a corner site in the domaine and feels so private although there are neighbours. It feels very green all around as it is on the edge of the woods, which offset the heat of July and August. It really is such a haven to return to - if you can tear yourself away! Gassin village is really beautiful and has a lovely terrace of restaurants overlooking the Gulf of St Tropez. It is under 10 minutes drive away and lunch or dinner here with the dramatic views is a real treat. New for 2026 is the rustic pergola overlooking the pool - providing shade and a place to relax, chat, read and enjoy the pool.
