About this property

Forest of Dean Romantic & Rustic Holiday Cottage

Up a forest track, the third of four properties with forest outlook immediately to the front and forest walks right from the doorstep, The Old Chapel has been sympathetically converted to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It oozes character. It is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population approx 1,000). The cottage is 80% pine clad (walls and ceilings) giving it a very warm and relaxing feel throughout. It has been furnished to give a 'home from home' feel all in wood and/or neutral colours. The general atmosphere is rustic, with mostly wooden floors and brick window cills, it is something 'a bit different'.
Our favourite time to stay in the Forest is the first week in June when all the trees and plants are newly out and the view from our sofas is stunning.
There are two bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both rooms have a double bed, so the cottage accommodates four people comfortably.
The upstairs bedroom is on a mezzanine overlooking the lounge. There is no door to this room.
The downstairs bedroom is just off the lounge and could affect light sleepers.
The only things that wake you up is birdsong!
The lounge/dining room is large, and looks larger because it has 14 foot high ceilings, mostly covered in wood panelling. We have three sofas in the lounge, all of which are comfortable - who doesn't want to relax on holiday?
The beast of a wood burner in the lounge gives a very relaxed feel in the evenings, along with some candles which we keep there. Very romantic!
The kitchen is small but very well stocked as we like cooking (and eating).
There is a dishwasher and a 6 foot tall fridge/freezer - more than enough to store a week's food for a family.
The garden is small, but there is a forest on the doorstep.
We have two reclining garden chairs in the back garden and a small BBQ should you wish to 'eat out'.
We hate holiday places that have no character, and have tried really hard to make sure that our one does . It is very well furnished so there should not be anything missing for your stay, but if there is, please let us know!
If you are bringing a little one with you, we keep a travel cot, stairgate and high chair in the cottage.
A really romantic place to escape, leave all your troubles behind and just chill!

I am older than I feel comfortable with. I live with my hubby just 3 miles from Heathrow so we're well used to noisy surroundings. We are both self-employed and work from home, often very long hours. We like eating (with a passion), holidays (don't get enough of them) and a bit of peace and quiet (don't get a lot of that either)!

When we purchased the cottage we were looking for something which felt like home both in terms of comfort and facilities. We wanted it to be within a 2.5 hour drive of London, have a lot of character, have forest on the doorstep and be very relaxing - this place ticked all the boxes!

We have identical twin daughters and four grandchildren (aged 10, 7, 3 and 6 months, who all visit with us at least twice a year. I love them to experience the freedom it is not possible to have at home, as they all live in urban areas.

Why they chose this property

I was born in the Forest of Dean, and lived there until the age of 18 when I left for London, never to return except for... every 3rd weekend for 40 years we've kept going back! We still have friends and family there of course. We live 3 miles from Heathrow and we get door-to-door in 2 hours 20 minutes. When my parents died, we didn't want to sever our ties with the Forest, so we bought The Old Chapel. We no longer need to stay with family there - we've now got our own place where we can entertain and relax. Our whole family love the Forest. We love its peace, its tranquility, and its people who are very very friendly. The Foresters are very friendly folk and 'what you see is what you get' basically. You'll know when you meet a Forester, they will always stop and chat.

What makes this property unique

From the minute we arrive, it spells 'relaxation' - which we hardly get at home. What do we like? The extensive wood panelling, the original wooden floors, the brick window sills, the log-burner, the very high ceilings and the feeling of space this gives, the Gothic chandelier, the galleried bedroom with its beamed ceiling, the courtyard garden (I can sit out and read at night), the fact that the cottage is up a small lane, and then woodland. We also like the fact that because the lounge windows are about 10-12 foot high, you are not aware of other properties around you. You can sit in the lounge by the fire with direct views over the Forest. I could go on and on and on and on! Night-time in the cottage is, for me, one of the best times to enjoy its beauty.
