Great property in a lovely location. Pub within easy walking distance provided tasty food. Plenty to see in the area and beyond. Loads of walking opportunities for all levels.
Accomodation was in very good order; as presented on the VBRO-website. We found everything needed for a comfortable stay in a ‘home away from home’.Communication with owner Phil left nothing to be desired. We had a lovely time during what was a first visit to the Dales. Newbiggin is a lovely little village for those who seek peace and quiet in the countryside. At the same time: within 90 minute drives plenty to see and do for those looking for more than that.Yorkshire folk struck us as welcoming, relaxed and friendly. Will definitely come back.
My wife and I had a very enjoyable long weekend stay at this lovely cottage (Friday - Monday). The cottage is very well appointed, and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. The village is nice and quiet, and the cottage is set right back from the main road that passes by the village. The local pub is only a short walk away and it serves delicious food. Booking a table is recommended. We stayed during a very hot spell, and the only improvement would have been if there had been an umbrella for the garden table to provide some shade. We would certainly book again!
A spacious, welcoming, tasteful and convenient place to stay in a hamlet in Bishopdale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Shower room and toilet downstairs with lovely under-floor heating; bedroom (with wash-stand), kitchen and sitting room upstairs with the outside entrance up a flight of stone steps. Easy off-street parking. From here you walk past a few houses to any of several public footpaths which lead you onto an open moorside, or valley walk, within a couple of minutes. The beauty of the surrounding area and indeed of the entire Yorkshire Dales National Park cannot be conveyed by mere words or even by photographs - you need to be in it to appreciate it. We had a lovely stay.
Cottage in the small neighbourhood newbiggin with a lot of public footpath's in a wonderful area Yorkshire!
Nice place to stay when you like a quit Holliday
We stayed at Westburn Cottage for a week in early July. The cottage is a perfect size for two people and was a great base to explore the Dales.
The kitchen was well equipped and the whole cottage was fitted out to a high standard. The outdoor space was a lovely spot to relax.
We really enjoyed our week staying here and would love to return to both the Dales and the cottage.
Great short break in the dales. Property was great with stunning views and peace and tranquility in this small village. Host was great , as was the local pub. Will return without doubt soon.
This converted barn has everything you could wish for and more. Lovely living room, with a fireplace that can be turned on when it is cold outside. The windows are each a painting with picturesque views. The kitchen is fully equipped. The bedroom also has the same view at the landscape. I think the bed had the best mattress of our holiday. Shower and toilet are downstairs, where we were positively surprised by the water pressure. The outside seating area made the house complete.
The host was more than helpful, thank you Phil.
I would recommend this house if you are looking for a quit place to stay. From here you can easily explore the Yorkshire Dales.
Quirky yet minimalist, traditional outer/modern inner, comfy, cosy, beautiful location
We loved staying here! Kitchen had everything, inc. a cafetière, salt & pepper grinders, dedicated drawer of superbly sharp knives(!) & a resident kitchen spider who earnt her keep by catching a mosquito!
The bed is huge - could easily fit 3 people! (Duvet cover is a bit noisy/rustles like taffeta when it moves, so light sleepers with partners prone to nocturnal limb flailing might be kept awake by this.
The antique wardrobe was ace - I enjoyed the labelled shelves based on sartorial stylings of yesteryear!
Loads of books, some DVDs, sofa was clean and comfy with a pouffe for weary legs, dimmer lights were appreciated.
Mobile signal was fair for Three but virtually nothing for O2, although can easily hook up to WiFi calling; smart TV has a free HDMI port for Chromecast/similar, & there's a Blu-ray player (lucky as we bought a couple in a charity shop in Leyburn).
Parking was fine, had to park right up against the barn door so that next door could get in too, but unless you have a van it won't be a problem for most.
We felt the TV was likely very audible to the family in the adjoining property (another holiday let); we could hear their movements so I'm sure they could hear us
We heard noisy doors/stairs from next door, and the presumed internal adjoining door didn't appear to have soundproofing (original oak door with a small gap underneath) so we felt bad watching films at night as they had little kids.
TV is on the adjoining wall and sofa is against the opposite wall
This is a very comfortable property. For our short stay we found that everything we needed was there. There was plenty of fuel for the multi-fuel burner, although we didn't need it. It was fun watching the robotic lawn mower.
Westburn Cottage provides an excellent location for exploring the Dales with an ideal local pub
Very good, minor points, a sketch direction diagram from The Street Head Inn would be helpful on arrival and we had some difficulty with the TV even after replacing the batteries in both remotes.
It was very wintery when we arrived but the property was toasty warm. Everything we needed was supplied. It was home from home with great views, good walking and interesting places short drives away.
What a delightful cottage, it has everything you could possibly need. The log burner is a treat, makes it so cosy. Great view out the windows and a lovely area to sit outside. A delightful village with very friendly residents.
What made it better is that my phone signal wasn’t great do meant no one could get hold of me…..another treat!
Fabulous area to walk and travel around if you want go a bit further (Fabulous base).
Will definitely be back.
Excellent property (you can tell it’s Phil’s family home from home). Clean and tidy throughout with plenty of space for 2 people. Very comfortable and cosy. Lots of nice touches like tea, coffee, dishwasher tablets, sanitiser, washing up liquid etc.
The view from the lounge and bedroom is spectacular. The garden area gets the sun on it during the afternoon through to sunset and is a perfect spot for a sundowner! Lovely wrought iron furniture.
The slimline dishwasher was an excellent addition as was the washing machine (although we didn’t use it). Underfloor heating in the bathroom was so luxurious. Oh and the shower is powerful with piping hot water. Just what you need at the end of a day after long hikes.
Huge, super king bed which was so comfortable. There’s no light or noise pollution which makes for a very sound sleep.
The local pub was really friendly and the food was superb. A 5 min stroll and you are there. We were glad we booked in advance as it was full every night.
Phil was a perfect host and answered any queries prior to departure and even text me when we were there to ensure we had settled in ok! Now that’s service.
We loved our time here and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Thanks for a relaxing long weekend. Perfect!
Lovely holiday cottage with great views. Very covid friendly. We had everything that we required for our holiday. Ideal location for site seeing and walking.
Well equipped and comfortable property in a fabulous quiet location. Lovely courtyard garden with a fabulous view, walks from the door and a pub within staggering distance! Property owner excellent in terms of communication and being helpful.
We really enjoyed our stay at Westburn Cottage. It is a cosy and comfortable retreat in a beautiful setting. The cottage is very well set up and sparkly clean. The king size bed was a luxury not often found in holiday rentals. The living area provided a large range of books, DVDs and has spectacular views. Communication with Phil was easy, as was the check-in process. It’s a great place to stay to enjoy this magnificent part of the country.
The location of the cottage is perfect for getting easily to your favourite places in The Dales, comfy and well supplied for self-catering.
Phil is a great host.
We recommend highly.

About the host

Despite this not being our primary residence, my partner & I love the Dales, and escape here as often as work allows. But as we can't be here all the time we don't see why others shouldn't enjoy the use of such a lovely property, in such a gorgeous setting. As it's our 2nd home, it's been furnished to a high standard with all mod-cons. We've been very lucky that everyone who's been to stay has loved it. So much so that we get people coming back year after year (one couple like it so much they've been 6 times and have already booked a break for next year). We aim to make your stay as enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible. And hope that at the end of your stay you'll feel like you don't want to leave.
Why they chose this property
The barn itself is right at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so it's a perfect base to explore & visit the surrounding countryside. Anyone who's ever watched James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great & Small' will know that the local scenery is stunning. The walking is fantastic too, but if the weather's not great there are plenty of places to visit including castles, museums, steam railways etc. And if eating out is your thing there are plenty of pubs, tea-shops, restaurants & cafes - all of which serve food to a high standard. Most of all, the people are really friendly - despite the (undeserved) reputation of Yorkshire folk being monosyllabic!
What makes this property unique
We feel it's got everything you could ask for. Access from the front door to the Dales, but close enough to towns and villages when you need them. The barn has full electric central heating & a multi-fuel stove for when you want that warm, cosy log-fire atmosphere. One other selling point - unlike many other cottages we DON'T charge extra for coal/wood in Winter (in some cases up to £20 extra a week), so you won't have to worry about any extra hidden costs.
