About this property

Cosy rural barn retreat for couples near stunning Cornish coast

Escape to this charming one-bed stone barn conversion nestled in a quiet rural hamlet within easy reach of North Cornwall & Devon's breath-taking coastline. Just nine miles from the seaside town of Bude, this hideaway offers the perfect blend of relaxation and the chance to explore unspoilt North Cornwall & Devon. A car is essential to make the most of this scenic area.
The barn combines rustic character with modern comforts, with a luxurious king-size bed for a great night's sleep. Guests have often described the barn as a home away from home, with good Wi-Fi and parking adjacent to the Barn. There's a Utility room next door with washing machine and dryer, and additional freezer space if you need it.
Unwind in the peaceful surroundings and reconnect with the natural world. There is a lovely private sunny seating area in front of the Barn where you can watch goldfinches, tits and the occasional woodpecker feeding from the birdfeeders. Depending on the time of year you might see starling murmurations on our front lawn, long-eared bats catching insects at dusk, or hedgehogs late at night. Our black and white rescue cat, Bubble, keeps a watchful eye over the whole farm. Alternatively, take advantage of all the walking opportunities, or explore the surrounding areas. We provide a wealth of information so that you can get the most out of your well-earned break. This includes our own guide covering places to eat and visit, the best local walks – many circular ones from our farm - beaches, and hidden gems.
We welcome one well-behaved, adult, dog. We ask dog owners to keep their dog on a lead when outside because the area in front of the Barn is not fully enclosed. The surrounding area is very dog friendly, and you may find shopkeepers offering your pet a treat with every visit! Most pubs and restaurants welcome dogs and nearby National Trust's Sandymouth beach allows dogs all year round.
Please note that the Barn is not suitable for babies, infants or children.
Although we are no longer a working farm a local farmer uses our organic field for his beef cattle, and we keep a few chickens.
We love welcoming guests from all areas of the UK and the world, with the aim that that they return home with everlasting memories of their stay here.

About the host

When we unexpectedly found ourselves without jobs after many years of commuting to London we decided to do something completely different - a real lifestyle change. So we bought our dream property in North Cornwall and haven't looked back. Our 5 children are independent; one lives locally with his family, and the remainder still live in SW London. Between us we are proud grandparents to 11 grandchildren. We have Bubble, surviving brother to Squeak, who we rescued from Cats Protection in 2015. Martin has nurtured a flock of chickens - all different breeds - and built a magnificent 'chicken hotel'. We're both keen photographers and walkers - both of which go very much hand-in-hand here. We both worked in London for many years, and met whilst working for a global publishing company. Riki worked locally as a care worker for 4 years, whilst Martin volunteered as a watch keeper at the National Coast Watch Institute at Boscastle. Our aim is that guests thoroughly enjoy the Barn, its location, and the surrounding area.

Why they chose this property

We knew instantly that this was the home for us. It offers the best of everything - North Cornwall is unspoilt and yet we're just a few miles from some spectacular coastline and beaches. It's in a quiet rural hamlet and yet you can get to the Atlantic Highway (A39) quickly, which links North Devon to South Cornwall. So we're easy to find. Woolley is a very friendly community and made us feel very welcome from the start.
And there are such a variety of things to do - walking, swimming, surfing, eating cream teas, coasteering, gardens and stately homes to name but a few.

What makes this property unique

You can park outside the cottage, enjoy a glass of wine in the private seating area and have a BBQ. From the kitchen window you can watch a variety of birds gorge themselves on the bird feeder.
Our farm overlooks the Marsland Valley which is home to the Marsland Nature Reserve. This boasts a wonderful display of butterflies, ancient woodland and heath that stretches out to the coast, managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust. It is a truly magical, undiscovered spot.
