About this property
On the Payette River - beauty, comfort, gourmet kitchen
Our home is Craftsman-style - open and comfortable, on the Payette RIver. Tucked in the forest downriver from the Shore Lodge with a spacious deck that looks out over the river below - the beauty and tranquility here make it the perfect retreat and a great place to celebrate family and friends being together. We are in a quiet residential neighborhood, with lovely full-time neighbors, so the only wildlife we want here are the ospreys, deer, songbirds, and the occasional fox.
The 2,100 sf main entry level features 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a spacious great room with solid cherry floors, large kitchen with island and barstools, a walk-in pantry stocked with more kitchen appliances and extras, and a laundry/mud room. 10 ft ceilings and 8 ft picture windows looking east at the river and mountain views brings in nature's beauty. The 4th and 5th bedrooms are downstairs in a finished 800 sf daylight basement. A queen bedroom is next to a full bath. The 5th bedroom is an open living room area next to the queen bedroom, with a twin bed, recliner chair, and 65" TV. It's a great suite for families with children who want a quiet separate area. A self-inflating single mattress is provided, along with bedding for it, bringing the total sleeping capacity to 10 people.
SNOWMOBILERS: Yes, there is room in our U-shaped driveway for trucks and trailers, BUT, our full-time neighbors are disturbed by the noise and exhaust generated by idling diesel trucks and/or snowmobiles being moved into the garage after dark.
If you bring your own sleds, you must agree to not start or run their engines or truck engines after dusk.
KITCHEN: open to the great room; fully equipped with all the tools for gourmet cooking, including a Cuisinart, large Ninja blender, pressure cooker, big turkey-roasting pan, enameled dutch oven, etc. We have granite counters, 2 sinks, custom cabinetry, and an island with 3 tall bar seats. Art tile backsplash with custom bronze tile and hardware. Dimmer switches throughout.
Dining Room: table seats 8 and sits along picture windows looking out to a beautiful view of the river and forest
Living room: sofa, wide snuggle chair and ottoman, plus a leather recliner. A new 77" SONY OLEDTV, AppleTV, Surround Sound speakers. High-speed Wifi, and YouTube TV and Netflix subscriptions. The river rock fireplace has a gas log insert that warms the room very quickly with a glowing fire and built-in fan.
Master bedroom: View windows face the river. California King natural latex bed, large bathroom with heated limestone floors, a separate toilet room, walk-in double showerhead shower with ceramic and bronze art tile, and a walk-in carpeted closet. The bedroom has a door out to the deck.
2nd bedroom: at the front of the home, King bed.
3rd bedroom: Queen bed, dresser, and desk.
Guest bath: tub and shower, 2 sinks, and a linen closet. Next to the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms.
4th bedroom + 1: In the private suite downstairs - an 800 sf daylight basement. The bedroom has a Queen bed and adjacent full bath with shower/tub. Also downstairs is a bonus room with a 65" TV and one twin bed that serves as the “+” bedroom. A self-inflating air mattress is provided with bedding for a 10th guest.
Upstairs laundry room. Washer/dryer, Iron and board, lots of coat hooks.
A two-car garage opens into the house. Remote garage door opener provided. Beach chairs, towels, bicycles, and coolers. are there for your use.
HANDICAPPED: There are 2 stairs at the front entrance to the home, and from the garage, there are 2 shallow stairs.
We had Air-Conditioning installed in Sept. 2022.

About the host
Hosted by Ken and Valerie Swink
Ken and Valerie- We've been married 37 years, with 2 daughters and 2 grandsons. Valerie is a jewelry and tile designer from San Diego and Ken, her husband and business partner, is from Burbank. We reside in the North Diego area. Now retired, we have time to manage this vacation rental on our own after having not-so-good experiences using property managers in the past. We like to rent homes through Vrbo when we travel, so we know what it's like, and what good service and comfort is. Guests have told us the kitchen is the best equipped they've ever seen, even over their own home's. That was the goal.
Why they chose this property
McCall is a magical place. It hit us like a thunderbolt in 1994 when we first drove into town. Not that we had planned to buy a second home, it's just that we HAD to once we felt this place. Over 27 years later, it's still heaven to us. The lake, the trees, nature, and the locals - all enchanting. If we weren't such weather wimps, we'd probably live in McCall year-round, but Southern California and the ocean makes a great combination with magical McCall.
We found this house on a beautiful spot in Rio Vista overlooking the Payette River. The original house was built by Corey Engen, the Olympic downhill medalist who was part of the group that started Brundage Mountain Ski area. He also developed the Rio Vista neighborhood and kept this lot for himself. A bit dated when we bought it, we loved it regardless, and family vacations were blissful.
Until the great fire.
An electrical fire started when we weren't there. After the initial shock and tears, the loss turned out to be a blessing. We were able to completely rebuild, redesigning the floor plan and adding on a luxurious master suite. It's so much more beautiful now. The forest around it didn't burn - we were so lucky. We put in a circular driveway and lots of custom features. Valerie used bronze tile from our art tile line in her floor and wall designs. We love the Craftsman style, using fine touches like quarter-sawn oak cabinets, Arts and Crafts lighting, and warm wall colors. Big log homes have their charms, but this has a special quality to it that feels cozy, warm, refined, and peaceful to us.

What makes this property unique
Being outdoors in the forest is so wonderful that we made part of the deck covered so we could go outside whatever the weather. Especially when it rains - we love to go out and watch the early summer downpours. We also wanted a protected outdoor eating area with a gas barbecue. Two steps down is a wide deck with neither roof nor high railings to block the view. We line up the chairs, feet on the rail, and toast our blessed life. One more tip: Morning coffee out there in a warm jacket is heavenly.
